I know, that occurred to me; but playing MHF online isn't any small feat and requires you to have some fairly specific hardware to connect to the community.
The fact that it's not online out of the box is going to be a turnoff for most of the people who would otherwise have probably picked it up. Don't get me wrong I really enjoyed the singleplayer aspect of PSU and will probably enjoy replaying the second story when I eventually get AOI; but aside from trying to remember something, I never bothered to play it after I beat it and only even touched the "extra mode" to fiddle with character creation without lag.
I just think it's a really poor decision on SEGAs part to not have a real online aspect. It's the entire reason to play this game instead of any other action oriented RPG's.
Does anyone know if PSU works on a macbook, the newest model under Bootcamp of course. I'm thinking no, but it couldn't hurt to ask. I don't wanna waste my money getting windows if it isn't.
I plan on coming back online for pc next month if I can find the expansion.
I don't think its compatible with macbooks sorry. There are still some compability problems with AOI for us PC players like me...
Anyways... SECOND AOI UPDATE YAY!
And the main site had a small face lift
CHRISTMAS LOBBIES RETURN TO GURHAL
Christmas is coming, and lobbies have been decorated for the winter holidays, awaiting your visit. How about preparing a special present for your close friends? You may also see a special seasonal creature in some missions.
1UP PLATINUM CUP REWARDS
The 1UP Platinum Cup event rewards will continue until 12/21. Please check the "1UP Platinum Cup" event page for details.
NEW MISSIONS (AMBITION OF THE ILLUMINUS ONLY)
Hill of Spores C to S: Mission Counter: Shikon Islands: Tanze Route
Photon levels are extremely high in the Habirao Forbidden District. The area is closed to protect people from photon poisoning. As a scout for the GUARDIANS you must enter the area and clear it of dangerous creatures.
Dancing Birds C to S: Mission Counter: Habirao F.D: Village
The SEED and the high photon density in the Habirao Forbidden District have caused an outbreak of rare mutant Rappies, lead by a huge Rappy. Defeat the giant Rappy king!
NEW ITEMS (AMBITION OF THE ILLUMINUS ONLY)
For the struggling GUARDIANS to restore order in the chaos caused by the Illuminus attacks, they will need to be stronger then ever before. New high-rank weapons and shields can be found in the strange Habirao forest area that has just opened for exploration.
New color variations for Male/Female clothing sets and CAST parts are available in stores. The Mikumiko set and CAS-miko parts are available as random rewards from the offering box in the NEUDAIZ Ohtoku Temple lobby above the Pavilion of Air.
New My Room items are now available in the variety shop and for exchange in the Casino. Some existing Casino items will no longer be available, but will return in rotation.
BALANCE UPDATE
TECHNIC Speed Adjustment: The speed in attack TECHNICS cast has been rebalanced, mostly to improve their performance and balance at high levels (PA level 21-40), although some attack TECHNICS will cast slower than before at low levels (PA level 1-10). For example, at levels 1-10 the TECHNIC Foie was adjusted from 0.1 to 0.2 seconds, and at levels 31-40 it was adjusted from 0.4 to 0.3 seconds.
Although most support TECHNICS were untouched, there are small changes to Resta, Reverser, Gi-Resta, Regrant, and Megistar.
RA- TECHNIC Target Adjustment: Along with improved speeds, the RA- TECHNICS will now affect four targets at PA Level 31-40
Rod TECHNIC Power Adjustment: All TECHNICS are boosted 20% when cast with a Rod.

Played a bit last night with my lvl11 Newman Hunter. Went through the newbie mission inside the station to get my PSU legs back was surprised they upped the amount of money enemies drop. I was getting $200+ from a lvl1 monster.
I also tried one of the new missions on the blue planet, was pretty easy since it was C ranked and all the monsters were lvl5. But then I came across a lvl15 Grass Assassin who gave me some trouble but I killed it with some monomate use. Then Two More GAs Spawned and killed me by stunning me and smacking me around before I could heal. I wanted to play my Human Force tonight, but the servers are down for the update. Just try again tomorrow night.
Yeah, money drops have been insanely increased. They also increase with more people in the party. So in a full team on an S rank mission, even wimpy enemies can drop over 5k.

So do you still have to level spells by using them over and over? And did they make it so you can actually get xp from healing ? Nothing was more annoying than killing waves of enemies and getting no experience because you were busy keeping the damn hunters alive.

Yes, and no..
You still have to raise your PA's buy using them over and over again
No you cant level up just by healing. You can level your job skill up but not your player level..I saw a level 1 Fortetecher 15 once, and all she did was run missions with people and heal them, nothing else, just heal..
Well forces are supposed to get exp by nuking things before the hunters get in there so they can get a fraction of the exp. However once you get dambarta high enough, you can just steal exp because nothing can touch you. The range of dambarta is huge and the chances of it freezing an enemy are like 80%.
Well well,
SEGA has decided to sneak in a small christmas gift for us... instead of the usual 2 week update interval...
We get an update this week MOFO BRAIN!

Jesus almighty that mission is hard..Mother Brain is a pain in the ass to kill off..
even on a rank..
A friend and I decided to do the mission on A ranking to check the map out first before we attempt it on S rank..I died at least three times before we even hit the third room..
S ranking is even more nuts..its very doable with a full party, but with two or three people and pm's is barely passable..
Mother Brain is an okay boss but it would've been better if it wasn't a Fakis swap with drill arms. I like the computer voice though.
Also dammit, it looks like I'll have to make a girl alt. character. I've been with my main male newman for so long but I just got a clothing set from the shrinebox and I can't let it go to waste. Stupid girls only clothing set. It's like a treehouse club I tells ya!
Like, crazy awesome. XP and Meseta drops are dramatically increased for the duration, as are rare drops, etc etc. I started a CAST Ranger last night, did some Colony missions solo to about level 6, then joined a team doing the C rank MaxAttackG and we ran it 3 times and I ended at I think level 23.
Also I should point out that I migrated to the 360 version. I haven't played the PS2 one in forever and on a whim I downloaded the free PSU online trial and holy crap. The community is far better, the graphics are far better, the game is far smoother, loading is far quicker, communicating is far better; every aspect of the game is better. So, I decided to abandon my PS2 guy (he was only 47 anyway) and start up on the 360. The biggest drawback is the 9.99 charge on top of the charge you already pay for live. I'll live. Also, this is more from AOI than the 360, but combat is so much smoother now than it was at launch. It's much more enjoyable.
Anyway, just a heads up about the Maximum Attack G. Forest/Caves/Mines/Ruins are unlocked; and at 100,000,000 kills (we should hit it by the end of this week):
Dark Falz will be unlocked!
. The PSO levels aren't identical to the old game, obviously, they're shortened, and atm there's no bosses. Some of the enemies are more like fillers, though there's a lot of the old ones redone. Also, the music is the old stuff, so that's cool. And there's hidden prizes for up to 200,000,000 kills too, so those should be good.
Linky: http://phantasystaruniverse.jp/event/mag2008/en/
Already unlocked (rewards to be given after the end of the event):
10,000,000: 2 weeks holy light for all races
20,000,000: Weap/Armor synth rates +10%
35,000,000: Treasure Box Room Deco
50,000,000: Ruins Unlocked
65,000,000: Clothes/Parts half price
80,000,000: ???
100,000,000: ???
120,000,000: ???
140,000,000: ???
160,000,000: ???
180,000,000: ???
200,000,000: ???
BTW, kill numbers are across 360/pc/ps2 servers.
As of this posting kill score is: 73,604,793
In order to be eligible for the rewards you must participate in the event mission during the event. After the end of the event, the Maximum Attack mission (from the colony guardian building) will still be available but all special xp/meseta/loot rates will be returned to normal.
There's also some leaderboard rewards for the event, for # of kills, faster clear, etc. But that's really outside my reach so I don't care too much. Oh, but if you're a bad enough dude, Spread Needle is a reward for being in the top 500 kill ranking board. I don't know if this is server independent or not.
EDIT: Stolen shamelessly from pso-world here's the latest update to PSU:
* Job Level Caps will be raised to 20.
* Chikki Kyoren-jin will have its base-power dramatically reduced.
* The stats (Accuracy, Percentage, Attack Power) on all Rifle Photon Arts will be increased.
* Elemental percentages on several Laser Cannon photon arts will be improved.
* The PP cost on several Gi and Nos Technics is being reduced.
* The ability to level Photon Arts using automated means is being removed through modified enemy behavior in certain missions.
* Fighgunners' proficiency with machineguns, handguns and twin handguns will be upgraded from A to S.
* Guntechers' proficiency with wands will be upgraded from A to S. They will also receive a boost in their base TP.
* Fortetechers will receive an HP boost.
And following the MAG event, the apparently much-delayed patch that is supposed to dramatically improve TECHNIC and PA leveling should go live.
I've been intensely tempted to reup with this lately, but have held off, since I would also feel drawn to picking up the expansion (360 version). I haven't played since about two months after the game came out. I take it even with the base game, there's a lot more to do?

In the same basic style as the original game, yes. Think of it this way: Ambition of the Illuminus is to Phantasy Star Universe what PSO Episodes 1&2 was to PSO version 2. Some new weapon types, some new classes, some new areas, a few new distractions, but the core of the game is fundamentally unchanged.
Kupi on
My favorite musical instrument is the air-raid siren.
Like really any expansion to any game it just adds more, but usually of the same.
Mechanics wise, there are some slight changes to combat that aren't very overt. A "combo" system like PSO was added in, but it's hidden in the system to where you can keep spamming attack if you want, but if you time your attacks right the third will be a crit, sort of like PSO. Also, you can get a bonus hit on enemies if you do an attack after either they dodge or you dodge, I can't remember.
Anyway, yeah. A lot more zones, story missions (online only for all systems, 360 AOI has no offline at all; whereas ps2/pc have the EP.2 missions offline....which is kind of pointless IMO), weapons and weapon types, new lobbies, a way better My Room decoration system, Casino, enemy types, etc.
For the 360 AOI is only about $20 bucks, which is pretty good IMO for any sort of expansion. It's a lot more content than usual DLC, it really is a full on expansion.
But yeah, I'm talking it up. If the base PSU wasn't your thing, then it's likely AOI won't do anything for you. I'm one of the few who actually liked the EP1&2 stories from PSU (ep2 was only online) so I'm looking forward to starting the EP3 missions, I just want to get some more levels.
Also, an update to my previous post; I got to level 23 in about 5 hours of playing, then yesterday I got to level 36 with about 2 1/2 hours more, all in MAG missions. Considering I played for a LONG time on the PS2 and only got to level 45ish, this is a vast improvement on the leveling curve, and I fully intend on using the bonus xp from the event to level up a couple guys to moderate levels before it ends. The only problem I've run into is that leveling so fast your income doesn't keep up with your leveling, so getting new gear is hard.
However, there's a constant stream of level 100+ people running A/B/C missions for quick loot, badges and kill counts, so even if you're under leveled you can still hop in (missions are 4 people max for this event) and tag enemies for xp. Just when you join ask if they mind if you tag along for xp, most people I've ran into so far don't care.
I really liked PSU, but I fucking hated how they were like "lol let's not give them advanced classes for more than a month or anything fun, have some shitty 5-star weapons"
Since I'm on the 360 now; when the free time starts on the ps2/pc I can log back in and gather my crap if anyone is interested. I'm sure what I had won't be worth much anymore though, as the last time I played A rank was the best stuff online and S stuff hadn't been released yet.
Going to start hopefully playing this on the 360 very soon. Send friend requests to KaseiusC, could use a few people to play with if any of you are still playing regularly.

I play quite a bit; mainly group up on weekends though since I work random hours during the week.
My characters currently:
Galedrid - lvl 85 - Fortegunner 15
Kingshand - lvl 24 - Hunter 7(ish I think?)
Mayene - lvl 20 - Force 5(ish I think?)
I'll be reupping my 360 PSU account in the next day or so. My gamertag is Kirin if anyone would like to friend/group. Would love a steady few people to play with in this one.
It is so much more enjoyable than at launch, I've been playing around universes 01/02, send me a friend request on XBL (KaseiusC) or we can set up a play time.
Just so everyone knows: the MAG event is closed. Sega has stated that the two week "extension" will occur later in june instead of tacked on at the end of the actual event. Event rewards will not be paid out to accounts till after the end of the extension due to the fact that the extension kills will still count toward the grand total (which ended at 167million). Though the leaderboards will be reset for the extension, with whole new sets of winners for those boards, the first event board winners still won't get their rewards till after the event.
ATM the date people are estimating for rewards payout is the July 17th maintenance.
A lot of people are (understandably) pissed off about this, since the two free weeks for the PS2/PC versions won't coincide with the MAG extension making them kind of futile and having to wait nearly two months for the rewards for the event makes people angry. I can't say I'm bothered too much, but I'm pretty easy going about the whole thing. The reward I really cared about was the 1/2 of clothes which I was going to use to deck out my CAST in fashon and use the cheap shoes to create a pure armor PM.
