Put in landscape and weather, when it rains the bus moves to the right slightly more than usual. Online scoreboard is a must. A map might be okay, but the point of the game is boring realism so make it that when you open the map it takes up the whole screen or looks away slightly so you can't see where you're driving.

Torque can only have a map that is a particular size. When you get to the edge, it "wraps" to the other side.

I don't recall the unit scale right now

Awesome, then just randomly generate a height map in terragen.

Edit: There's something about scale here, but I don't know if it helps: http://members.cox.net/midian/gamedesign/tgeworld.htm

Edit: Here's an image of Tuscon just to give you an idea of the hills: http://geology.com/satellite/cities/tucson-satellite-image.shtml

Looking in my little Torque book of secrets:

A default size map (squareSize set to 8 in the map's MIS file) is 65,536 world units along its side. 1 WU is equal to one scaled inch.

    Oh god this. Please this.

With realistic physics and a melee combat system.

    The driver is fair game.

If halkun makes the scenery and bus models available, it would probably be easy for somebody to make a source map from it, where everybody spawns in the bus, with "vehicle" controls for the driver's seat, that actually just move the map below the bus.

It'd be more of an art project than anything.

make it so that once you hit the 45 mpg speed limit, if you then descend below 30 the bus blows up and you have to start over. also use lots of sound clips from speed. whats her name will be non-killable npc along with that token minority guy.

At some point about halfway through the trip, add a fork in the road. If they choose the correct path, they will arrive in Las Vegas. If they choose incorrectly, they end up in Barstow and end up living there. They would receive -1 points.

    Sorry, allow me to eloborate...

    From the Wiki:
Desert Bus is the best known minigame in the package, and was a featured part of Electronic Gaming Monthly's preview. The objective of the game is to drive a bus from Tucson, Arizona to Las Vegas, Nevada in real time at a maximum speed of 45mph, a feat that would take the player 8 hours of continuous play to complete, as the game cannot be paused.

The bus contains no passengers, and there is no scenery or other cars on the road. The bus veers to the right slightly; as a result, it is impossible to tape down a button to go do something else and have the game end properly. If the bus veers off the road it will stall and be towed back to Tucson, also in real time. If the player makes it to Las Vegas, they will score exactly one point.

Having the Torque engine will allow me to make a stand-alone game. I only have the model in work for now. (I still have to put in the seats) after that I have to rig the bus so the wheels turn. Now I have the bus in parts, and I can make small cosmetic changes.

The engine will allow me to make a "never ending road" but in 3D. I also can hook in an odomoter and spedometer (for what it's worth). Lighting and day/night effect work out of the box.

I was thinking of putting in an overhead map. I'll have to chose a "route" that doesn't go through Phoenix.

Maybe a "leader board", so I can keep track of high scores?

    hah!

The correct choice will be to threaten to run them over if they don't tell you the correct path. You can run them over anyway even if they do give in.

Funny thing. In the actual game, the journey takes about eight hours but about six hours in, a single fly hits the windscreen and remains there until you reach your destination. This feature should be retained in the 3D version.
