Ok, I have been inspired by
LoadingReadyRun's Child's play marathon, I've decided to put my hat into the ring. During the first few hours someone mentioned that there should be a source version of Desert Bus. Because I have a Torque license, I've decided to make a 3D version of "Desert Bus" for everyone. (not the Source engine, but the Torque engine). I think I can make it before the end of the Child's play drive, and so if I'm able to pull it off, I'll "sell" it and donate the profits to Child's play.
Here's what I have so far.

(for some reason, it's smushed)
Anyways. I'm open for "improvements" to the game. The rules will be exactly the same. Should we have a map? What route should we take?
I'll be finishing the bus tonight, and I'll be making the road tomorrow. I should have everything boned up and articulated..
Comments?

It's a game engine. Presumably that's the game engine he'll be using.
Because, I mean, people'd probably find a source version a lot more popular
since, you know, people actually use source
I don't think desert bus will be popular with the modding community anyway.
But yeah, Desert Bus with portals please.
So by "Desert Bus" he is referring to that website, not the bus itself. Okay.
He's making a model. That's why I'm talking about releasing installers.
No, by "Desert Bus" he is referring to a game from Penn and Teller that involves driving a bus from/to Las Vegas and somewhere else from memory.
Right.
Everybody else just rides in the bus.
And tries to not fall asleep.
From the Wiki:
Having the Torque engine will allow me to make a stand-alone game. I only have the model in work for now. (I still have to put in the seats) after that I have to rig the bus so the wheels turn. Now I have the bus in parts, and I can make small cosmetic changes.
The engine will allow me to make a "never ending road" but in 3D. I also can hook in an odomoter and spedometer (for what it's worth). Lighting and day/night effect work out of the box.
I was thinking of putting in an overhead map. I'll have to chose a "route" that doesn't go through Phoenix.
Maybe a "leader board", so I can keep track of high scores?

The context for the game was it was designed because (at the time) Janet Reno thought games were too fantastic and needed to be grounded more in reality. Penn and Teller made this game to show what games "based off of reality" would be like.
It's quick, it's easy to make, and thought I would do something for Child's play.
I'm actually "out" right now, but I'll be attacking this when I get back home later tonight.
What do we do?

How about having .. animals of some kind in the roads, on occasion. D'no what would be there, though, in the desert. How about some potholes to avoid, in the road?
How about have a 'radio' that plays MP3s from a user-selected folder.
How about putting rest areas or gas stations along the way. Make it so you have to gas back up.
How about this.. let's say that, since you're doing this monotonous drive, you have to drink coffee to stay awake. So as a gameplay mechanic, you have to keep up a steady supply of caffeine or else you start to doze off and lose control of the vehicle. Then, you also have a meter that tells you when your bladder is full and you have to stop for to take a leak. Maybe you can have a urination minigame or something in there.

How are you going to be making this fun?
Theres cake at the end.
A height map for the elevation levels? That's cool. Does the elevation ever really change on those roads, or are they constantly flat the whole time?

Kind of like how in "Let's play" threads, everyone plays the game!
A round of 100-bottles of beer on the wall, that goes to 95, then someone fucks up, they say "Oops! We have to start all over!" and IT KEEPS LOOPING LIKE THAT.
Ragdoll Physics.
Stealth Elements.
Also: running over aliens and cows on the way
Just do this, but include an options menu with a panel for sound. Have it so that if you try to increase the volume, nothing happens, but every tick you decrease it, it gets louder.
Also:
Caffeine meter. When it gets low, its gets harder and harder to steer correctly
Wild animals crossing road. Bears, coyotes, bobcats, etc.
Potholes/rocks. Hit one and you get a flat tire. Only 2 spare tires on bus.
Customizable radio. Plays MP3s from selected folder. If no folder is selected, plays the 99 bottles of beer that stats over at 95 or so.
Gas stations. Place them apart so that its hard to gauge when to fill up, especially towards the end so the player will run out and have to be towed back/start over.
