I am on a PC rpg kick at the moment and I want to try some stuff I have never played before. I am interested in Anachronox since I really enjoy sci fi themed rpgs, but I never seem to see this game mentioned or talked about. It has an average score of 81% over at Game Rankings, so it was at least well received by game critics.
I checked the Wikipedia entry for the game and was interested to find out it apparently plays more like a jrpg rather than your typical PC rpg. This isn't a problem for me really, since I enjoy jrpgs as well. As long as it has interesting characters and a good story, I will probably enjoy it. I have to admit though that I pretty much laughed at some of the character models when I was looking at screen shots, but if it's a fun game I'm not too concerned.
So, is it worth a shot or should I pass? What about any must have mods?
The story and certain elements of it are rather fun, but overall it was to repetitive for me, especially combat wise.
It is worth playing though, atleast the beginning, I stopped playing it around the time artifacts seem to be thrown at you constantly and they all seemed pretty useless.
So if you can ignore poor combat and like to do linear puzzles, go ahead .
I would watch the machinima instead of getting the game. It's basically a movie based on the cutscenes. Honestly, the game isn't worth playing, but the story is worth experiencing. This is the better way to do it, in my opinion.
Cherrn on
All creature will die and all the things will be broken. That's the law of samurai.

I can't stress this enough.
The game itself is... okay. But the machinima is very much worth seeing.

I can't comment for the quality yet, but this site has download links for what looks like the entire movie and one of them is an 800mb divx (I'm hoping it's high quality).
Honestly, the movies were great and all, but it was the writing for every single character interaction that I enjoyed the most. Dialog straight out of old Lucasarts adventure games. The lifecursor made it even more like a point & click game. Like monkey island with turn-based combat ever so often, and minigames to do various things to the environment.
I don't play RPGs. And with nothing in my experience to compare the combat to, I throughly enjoyed it. So if you can swing it, make it your first RPG with turn based fighting.

Funny I had the opposite experience, the first part rocked, the last part was repetitive and meh.
Fortunately the latter is reasonably straightforward.

Edit: FORGET THE GAME AND WATCH THE MACHINIMA NOW!
The story's great, and the entire world design and concept are spectacular, but it's not worth slogging through the gameplay.
