What the.........my computer thinks my ipod touch is an iphone!
I just got an iPod Touch today and I tried connecting it to itunes like told to, though itunes informs me that it "cannot connect the iPhone because of an unknown error" but it is an iPod Touch! WHAT THE!!??!?!
I'm pretty sure that on unimportant/rare messages on the iPod touch, the terms "iPod touch" and "iPhone" are used interchangeably. I'd be more worried about the 'unknown error' bit than the misclassification - an iPod touch is just a crippled iPhone anyways.
I had this same problem. Here is what you do to fix it.
1- Uninstall iTunes
2- Uninstall Apple Mobile Process (or something similarly named. i cannot remember exactly)
3- Uninstall Quicktime
Then download and reinstall itunes and quicktime. That should fix your problem.
When I called apple support the guy said the problem was that i was uninstalling only itunes, and the problem was with the apple's mobile device drivers, which also needed to be uninstalled.
if you get stuck i suggest you call apple support. i did that and the guy solved my problem in less than 5 minutes.

However, as your problem is an "unknown error", I suggest you call Apple support. Or take it back.
