Pb and A Cat - Fake Trees

Even though we're in a condo now, we still got a new artificial tree for Christmas this year. I was aware the lights strings do have some lead in them, but now I'm reading the branches themselves may rain death down upon my family?

Some sites actually talk about the artificial branches "snowing lead" down onto the presents and ground below. Is this just fear mongering, or is it a real threat? Not too worried about my wife and I, but our cat takes to chewing the branches sometimes. Is the cat in danger, and if so, can one buy a lead-free tree?

The only real study I could find cited. It seems to indicate that while artificial trees do contain lead, they are not hazardous unless extensive exposure (such as, say, chewing on the branches) is had and the person being exposed is small (or, say, cat size). This was only based on the abstract, however - I don't have any subscriptions to the online services that would allow me to see the entire study (EBSCO or ProQuest).

Might you try spraying the branches of the tree that are within your cat's reach with some sort of specific spray designed to keep cats from chewing on things? Sure, having a tree scented lightly like lemon might be unpleasant, but if it keeps your cat alive throughout the holidays it may be worth it.

I'm going to try picking some spray from the pet store today, but I've tried the bitter stuff but it didn't bother him at all.

I guess I'm trying to find out if we'd be better off with a real tree, assuming there is going to be some chewing (by the cat, not me).
