Is it that time again?
"Oh no!" You gasp, your gun clutched tight to your chest.
"Oh yes!" I murmur, as spanish taunts filter in from outside and we both hear a chainsaw revving up.
Delightful!
RESIDENT EVIL 4, released in 2005 for the Gamecube, is the latest installment to CAPCOM's popular zombie slaying game series: RESIDENT EVIL.
You play as Leon Scott Kennedy, yes the same one from RESIDENT EVIL 2. Unlike most RE games, you play as the same character for a vast majority of the game.
THE RACCOON CITY INCIDENT HAS FADED FROM THE MINDS OF MOST. The year is 2004, six years after those events. Leon Kennedy is a secret agent for the United States Government, given the mission to track down the President's kidnapped daughter. His mission is to follow a lead in Spain, is this the real deal, or just another dead-end?
LIKE YOU DON'T KNOW! YOU'VE PLAYED THE GAME.
You HAVE played the game, that's because it's out for the Gamecube, Playstation 2, PC and Wii, and has recently been released as part of the Playstation 2 'Essentials' pack. 29.99 for this, Outbreak, and Code Veronica.
CHARACTERS:
HEROES OR SOMETHING LIKE THEM:
Leon Scott Kennedy:
No not this one.
That's better.
The main character of Resident Evil 4, Leon's done a bit of maturing from the last time we saw him, six years ago in Raccoon City, gone are everything bad about him from then. He's grown-up, and achieved a level of mystique and skill equal to any of his peers. A gunnery expert, a knife master, and a hand-to-hand genius, he'll need every ounce of skill, luck and anything else he's got if he's gonna rescue the president's daughter.
Believe me, he's a bad enough dude.
Ada Wong:
The mysterious Ada Wong. Left for dead, Ada crawled out of Raccoon City somehow (See: Umbrella Chronicles, perhaps?!) and is now working for Wesker. Beautiful, mysterious, and deadly. She's part antagonist and part love interest. She hasn't lost a touch of her mysterious allure from Resident Evil 2, but what are her motives? Who's she really after? And why does she wear such impractical red dresses in dangerous combat situations?!
You'll find out part of the answers in regular Resident Evil 4. And some more in certain minigames.
Ashley Graham:
"LEON! HELP!"
"Help me Leon."
The other playable character in Resident Evil 4, she's the titular 'Resident Evil' of the series. No really, trust me, she's an absolute horror. A bitch, really.
20-year-old Ashley Graham is the president's daughter and all around eye candy. She's Leon's mission here in this spanish village, and everything else comes second, including his own life, if need be. She's a regular damsel in distress, but she has her own unique skills. Bets on she's a chemistry major, how else can she turn herbs into potions without training?
VILLAINY:
Osmund 'Small-Time' Saddler:
A probably-evil cult leader who's the cause of all this trouble with evilness and so forth. OR SO IT APPEARS, in such a complicated game like Resident Evil 4, it's hard to tell who's an enemy and who's an ally... (No it isn't).
He's not big deal, in fact, one could say he's... small-time.
???:
The Merchant:
He'll buy it at a high price.

FAQ:
Why didn't you just copy information from wikipedia? Why'd you write your own stuff out? Are you a NERD?
Yes, when it comes to Resident Evil 4, I am a nerd. I love it, it's no fun to copy paste wikipedia articles, I say.
It's funny you mentioned Leon the professional and the hard mode of RE4 is called Professional lolol. What a coincidence.
Yeah and the burst pistol you unlock for beating the game is called the Matilda. lol COINCIDENCES M I RITE?
DIFFERENT CONSOLES:
I have only played the PS2 version, but I can tell you: Smooth, handles like a dream, add-ons are nice. Any input on other versions and how they work would be nice.
RE4: WiiEdition is amazing.
UNLOCKABLES:
Surely! (These are for the PS2, the only version I have, not sure what's on other consoles, help?!)
Weapons:
Matilda: Beat the game.
Chicago Typewriter: Beat the game.
P.R.L. 412: Beat Professional Mode.
Handcannon: In Mercenaries: Have each mercenary get a five star rating on all of the stages.
Difficulty Modes:
Professional: Beat the game.
Costumes!:
Leon police costume, Ashley pop star costume: Beat the game.
Leon gangster costume, Ashley knight armor costume: Beat Seperate Ways (Not on the Gamecube, I don't think?)
MINIGAMES:
Out the wazoo!
Mercenaries: Non-canonical. Play as Leon, Ada, Krauser, HUNK or Wesker across four maps in a timed zombie fight. Try to earn high scores to unlock the mighty Handcannon! This could be a game-on if enough people wanna do a sort of PA ranking system. Or not. I suck at mercenaries anyway. Did just enough to unlock the handcannon.
Assignment Ada: Play as Ada in a semi-canonical fight with some Ganados. Run through a quick little skirmish, your own boss fight that seems erieely familiar to those who've beaten the main game, and generally show off some feminine moves. Nice.
Separate Ways: Not in the original Gamecube version, Separate Ways once again has you playing as Ada, this time through the entireity of Leon's quest. Find out what the bitch in the red dress was doing while Leon was almost getting shot, stabbed, bitten, infected, and otherwise bodily threatened. Not nearly as long as the main campaign, it's still a very nice bonus.

Thank you for your input. Those have been added.
That's if you disclude her Mr. Rumbold-like Jughead.
Oh my god. That's awesome.
I've never seen that before.
Is that where "Zombies comin' up the hell right now!" is originally from?
Hilarious.
I am currently in the castle, fighting my way to a legitimately completed Professional run so I only cheated for the handcannon.
As for mercenaries, how do you get over 200,000k? Even doing everything right and having at most two running combos for the entire round I'll plateau at least thirty thousand below that score, enemies seem to stop spawining for the last minute or so. Yes I destroy all the doors and get the extra points crates. Is it just luck?
Capcom need to make Code Veronica 2 on the Wii.
I should probably beat it, as I haven't seen the ending in a while. :P
However, I noticed that there seems to be a lot of hate for RE4 when it comes to the hardcore RE fan base. Not necessarily on this site, but on sites dedicated to Resident Evil. All I can say is. . .how can you hate Resident Evil 4? It just boggles my mind.
It's certainly understandable, I've never played any other resident evil games so I can't be certain, but I believe the tonal shift between them and 4 is quite dramatic. It's a pretty different game in a lot of ways.
It's like the switched gears and immediately perfected the new system. Well done.

Because it's nothing like the others? Apart from the tank controls and brief appearences of Wesker it shares nothing in common with the other games. The horror aspect for the most part is completely missing and there is no true item managment. Even on pro all my weapons have had a good supply of ammo, my TMP stocked up with over 200 shots. The puzzles too seem to have almost completely dissapeared. So basically because it's not at all like the others in the series and they see it as betrayel of the series roots? They're worried that its resounding success will lead to more just like it rather then what attracted them to the RE games in the first place?
Thats right, i gave up. I gave up on fighting Krauser in the tower. I WAS SO PISSED. How close is that to the end anyway?
I died, by a conservative estimate, sixty times against Krauser on Hard. Then I read that you should
Krauser's pretty close to the end, but his battle's immediately followed by an equally annoying section, namely Leon-and-helicopter vs. army of Ganados, which on Hard mode is basically Leon vs. army of Ganados. The helicopter is absolutely no help at all, and delights in sending down a few rockets on an area you've just cleared while you're fifty feet ahead getting molested by wave upon wave of enemies.
It's so incredibly satisfying to beat the game on Hard, though, that it's probably worth going back and trying again.
Don't worry it doesn't get harder than that.
"Prepare for your death, Leon."
"Prepare for your DEATH, Leon."
"PREPARE FOR YOUR death LEON!"
fuck him.
here's a hint:
The last boss was absolutely useless and a real let down, especially when all the other bosses were terrificly original and fun. The other disappointment was that after the brilliant village section the game became claustrophobicly linear. While the rest of the game was great fun, none of the other sections were able to match that feel of being in a proper zombie movie.
Also, the camera angle is undoubtedly one of the truly great gaming evolutions of last generation.
Oh, I'm immensely ashamed.
But god fucking dammit, Leon and Ada are shitty damn characters in Mercs, and I 5-starred the other three. THAT'S FUCKING GOOD ENOUGH.
Fixed. Otherwise I definitely agree with you, though it doesn't really bother me all that much that the game is more action that horror.
Leon's only shitty in Castle, when you have to deal with the Wolverines. Otherwise his shotgun and jump kick tear shit up. Ada's good in pretty much all of them, as the rifle and TMP are a great combination to have and her melee ain't bad either.
I will admit that the other three are way better, though. But I like Leon and Ada for the challenge.
I actually burned out on RE4, because about six months ago a mate challenged me to a speed run, one after the other. After stocking up on beer and pizza, he won the first round with 3 and half hours, then I won the second round (and overall) with some ridiculous time like two hours forty-five.
After that night I haven't played again. Unlocking everything and finishing the damn thing in under three hours makes me feel like I've overdosed on it somewhat.
Maybe. But, as a long time fan myself, I don't see it. Yes, it's completely different than the other games, but Resident Evil needed a revamp. The tank controls were atrocious. I can understand the story complaints, as it is a side story, but with Leon, Ada and Wesker there, it's not like they started completely over. And yeah, I understand the complaints about item management, too. I hope that's rectified in 5.
I, personally, am glad to see a lot of the puzzle element gone, though. Resident Evil puzzles were more often frustrating rather than fun. As far as the missing horror elements go. . .well, that seemed to be missing from the series for a long time. The only games in the series that truly scared me were the original, REmake and RE2.
I dunno. It seems like most of the hate is centered on what the game changed rather than the game itself, which, as you've said, was widely popular. It just seems like a lot of complaining for nothing.
Oh I agree completely, and the series was long due a shakeup that RE4 provided, I was just playing devils advocate.
As the game goes on and you start to acquire the ability to blow the hell out of more or less anything that crosses your path, sure, you start to relax a bit, but there's still moments. The Regenerators and the Iron Maidens were creepy as hell, especially the (I think) final Maiden in the cell block where you can hear it all the way down the corridor but you can't see it until it lunges out of its cell and turns Leon into a pincushion. Being hunted by the Right Hand and 'It' had me on edge, too, although in both cases it got a lot less scary when they were actually in a position where you could shoot at them.
As for if it's a scary game, just one pic will do:
oh god oh god
Oh, ok. I thought you were being hostile for a moment. My mistake! ;-)
But, yeah, I just don't understand how you could dislike it. I'll always have fond memories of the original games (Meaning the numbered games and CVX), and Umbrella Chronicles was a nice throwback to those games, but I'm glad the series is moving on. I can't wait for Resident Evil 5!
SHOTGUN TO THE FACE! ok he's dow-
What!? IT GREW BACK!?!? RUN OH GOD RUN!
HAHA I just blew your legs off fucker! Walk menacingly towards me now!
- HOLY FUCK HE JUST JUMPED ON MY THROAT WHAT THE FUCK
Contrary to popular belief, it's scarier when you're looking through the thermal scope.
OH GOD THE GREEN BLOB IS GETTING BIGGER AND I CAN'T AIM STRAIGHT OH GOD OH GOD.
God how I wish they had given that an entire chapter.
