ZUNE ISSUES! HELP??

Alright,

I don't personally own a Zune, so my account of this issue may not be as descriptive as it could be... but a co-worker of mine is at her wits end with a new Zune she got a few days ago (gotta love Black Friday shopping!). She's scoured technical help sites for the zune and turned up empty-handed. So, I knew there was no shortage of tech-savvy people here and was hoping somebody could help us figure this thing out:

Symptoms-
When the "Play/Pause" button is held down for 3 solid seconds the Zune appears to power down (as it's apparently suppossed to when this button is held).

However, the only way the Zune is suppossed to come back on is for this button to be held another 3 seconds. Unfortunately any button (control pad, ok, back, and play/pause) when pressed for a fraction of a second seems to power it back on.

When it powers on, the menu screen which originally had small font on it now has GIANT font that expands larger than the screen....???

She has tried powering it off and and engaging the slider that locks it, which seems to keep it from coming on and displaying the menu screen..... however, it still drains the battery as if it is staying on???

Through her research of the Technical support site for the Zune she found that you cannot power it down while it is hooked up to the computer or any power source..... but in her case, it is not.

Any thoughts on this? Like I said, my knowledge of the Zune is all second hand, so if the above description was lacking anything that could help in a diagnosis please let me know! :)

It's supposed to do that. You turn it off by holding the play for 3 seconds, but any button will wake it - that's what the hold button is for.

As for permanently shutting off, I believe it's like the iPod, where it's in a constant state of sleep. Meaning if you have it off for a week or so, the battery will be drained.

As for the font, the menu screen does have giant fonts on it as per the new firmware upgrades, that's just the user interface. I can't think of any other problems with the fonts, maybe a bit more explanation?

Also, she should read the instructions, because I'm pretty sure it tells you how to shut it off and that any button will bring it back.

EDIT: I should add, after reading that a couple more times, I think I know what the "font" problem is. When browsing media (music, pictures, videos), the fonts are small so as to get a decent size, but still readable list of what you have on the device. On the top level menu, the one that says music, videos, pictures, social, radio, podcasts and setting - the fonts are giant. This is because it is not a big list, and is just a stylistic choice.

Basically her Zune is functioning perfectly and she doesn't need to worry about anything. If she "shuts down" her Zune while playing a song, when she turns it back it will default to the upper most menu, the one with large fonts - to get back to her song, just have her hit the Back button on this screen.

If you hold back and down for five seconds, it turns it off entirely. Holding the play button just makes it sleep.

The new firmware makes the main menu font really large. As in podcasts just fits in the width of the screen.

Other than that, everything listed is normal.

    edit:

full list of zune button combinations:
    Cool key combinations

Press and hold the back button and it will take you to the main menu no matter where you are.

Press and hold the back+down buttons and your zune will go into deep sleep mode (so you don't waste battery).

Press and hold the back+up buttons to reset your zune. (This is just like a rest button on xbox or ps2, it won't delete anything)

Key combinations you might want to avoid

Press and hold the back+center+left buttons and the zune will delete everything it has on it, as well as the firmware.

Press and hold the back+center+right buttons and the zune will delete everything on it except the firmware.

I was actually just coming back here to post that she had discovered the back and down trick to shut it off entirely.... and found your post saying the same thing. Lol. Thank you. The additional list of shortcut keys is helpful too! Thank you both for responding! :D
