So another question - is this a lot more interesting than, say, EVE Online? I mean, X3 advertises open-ended gameplay, a huge universe, etc. - which EVE has, but EVE seemed boring (to me). Just trying to get more impressions before I spring for this.
EDIT: nm, I just went back to the OP and started reading. You can answer my questions if you like, but it looks like I asked things that are already being answered. I guess a comparison to EVE (minus the MMORPG part, of course) would still prove useful to me.
"EGOSOFT, a renowned developer of acclaimed computer games for PC, Mac and Linux, announced today that the latest game in their popular X series, X3: Terran Conflict, is now available for pre-order via Steam, a leading platform for the delivery and management of PC games and digital content with over 15 million accounts around the world. The full game will be made available October 17, 2008 as a worldwide digital exclusive via Steam, as well as at retail outlets in Europe.
"Since 1999 with the launch of X: Beyond the Frontier, the X series has always been about letting gamers trade, fight, build and think their way through the X Universe to try to find their way back home to Earth," said Bernd Lehahn, managing director of EGOSOFT. "With X3: Terran Conflict, for the first time ever, we're allowing players to finally visit our own solar system to travel and trade with all the stations and planets, including Earth - combined with updated next-gen graphics, an engrossing plot and plenty of side missions, we feel that this is the best X game yet and a perfect way to culminate the series."
As with the previous titles in the X series, X3: Terran Conflict is a single-player space simulation featuring fast-paced first-person space combat, free-form, open exploration of a huge dynamic universe, and large-scale management of the player's own intergalactic corporation. New to the X series with X3: Terran Conflict is:
-A brand new user interface allow full control using only the mouse
-New and improved mouse flight controls
-Several new races and factions, including Earth's primary military force, the Terran United Space Command
-Independent, non-player owned corporations, complete with unique ships and stations, offering new friends or foes to players
-New group management system allowing for better control of large numbers of ships in your fleet
-Over 100 new ships and several new ship classes
-Double the amount of distinct weapons
-The ability to board and capture huge capital ships with your own mercenaries and soldiers
Egosoft chose Steam as its exclusive online distribution platform as it has proven its leadship position in this space via prior releases in the X series.
"The folks at Valve are great to work with, and we saw great success distributing over Steam with our previous titles in the X series," continued Lehahn. "With over 15 million active users and a great installed community base, we feel that Steam is a perfect fit for X3TC."
I have to say this. I hate each and every one of you who recommended this game.
I played it a long time ago, and thought 'it's pretty cool, but nothing to write home about.' Then recently, I saw this thread and thought 'I still have that copy of X3, maybe I should give it a shot.' This time I took the time to read up on all aspects of the game. Last night I was up until about 5AM trying to make just enough money to start up my own chain of factories. THe night before I was up until 2AM playing around with trading.
This is terrible for me and I hope you all feel bad for making me addicted to this game.

How do you get containers in space into your cargo hold?
Open your cargo hold, (Hotkey is O, and its under the ship menu somewhere) and fly into it. If the ware class of the container is higher than that of your ship, it will explode on contact and do no damage.
I should have been more specific, is there any trick to hunting down weaker groups? Certain areas they appear in? I don't feel confident in my ability to take more than one M4 and/or two or three M5's at once. And hanging out in the sectors I have seen such groups before has not yielded any results yet.
Farnham's Legend is a pretty weakly pirate controlled sector right next to Argon territory. There's plenty of weak pirate patrols around there, as well as lots of Argon defense forces that you can run to should a pirate Nova pop up.
If you're having trouble taking on even a couple pirate M4s/M5s, then I'd suggest running simpler missions in friendly territory until you can afford a better ship. M5s aren't really threats, but their speed makes them tough to take on. I've never had trouble with M4s, unless there's a ton of them, because they lack both the speed of M5s and the firepower of things like M3s, meaning they can't really run from you and don't do enough damage to really be dangerous. So just get a better ship and also practice maneuvering and evading fire. If you've got a more agile ship than your enemies use that to your advantage to get out of their lines of fire.
For those who've played through X3:R's story campaign...
I know 2 races turn on you during the campaign, I'd like to avoid putting anything important in those sectors. Those are the Paranid and the Argon, right?
Finally fighter wings!! Customizable interface menus for the script community! BOARDING PARTIES.
Guys, I don't know if Universal Combat can tide me over till then. I'd reinstall X3 but it seems like a waste given that the new target of our affections will soon be with us.
...More campaigns! New start points!! O_O I wish I could sleep until release day...but I don't think I have that much nyquil. argh

just the paranid
honestly if you want to do the plot, do it before you build your empire and rush through it because you can't function properly without the paranid.

do you
like need any kind of infrastructure to do the plot
can i just do it in my "found" nova and not worry about much
cos if so I might as well it gives you money right

I don't recall needing infrastructure...actually at some point they -give- you a free factory.
Personally I didn't like the plot missions in X3 because they felt like they were ....sewn together wrong (to borrow a line from Dethklok). I liked X2's campaign...but I felt X3 paled in comparison. I really hope Terran Conflict will have a good campaign; I know it's a lot to hope for, but I want the last game in the series to be truly great. And I'm already griping that they still have opted to exclude cockpits as an on/off choice >.>

Uh, I was going to buy X3 rather soon but, um, what's TC?

I went through the plot in the starting Buster, so a Nova should do just fine.
The plot doesn't give you much compared to the X2 plot, and the missions are usually very buggy, so its not really worth going through it, IMO.
Werl it gave me a free jumpdrive.
And a free station sounds nice. I don't have one of those.
I'll just have to put my makin money dude somewhere safer while I'm out and about pissing people off until they like me again. Because as it stands I have to avoid a certain mission starting sector all the time and it's getting annoying.

Yeah, first the Paranid, then later the Argon. Keep in mind, though, the game seems to use two relationship levels for when the Paranid turn against you; the first is the one that has you as hostile, which lasts until the end of the campaign, when the second level (your "real" relationship, if friendly) is restored.
I had several factories up in Paranid space when they turned against me, so all I did was tell my ships in their sectors to either GTFO to Argon space, or dock with the factories. I remember some of my Advanced Satellites got killed, but the factories were fine; I placed the factories off in the corners of the maps, where no patrols usually went, but I don't know if that makes a difference. Maybe I just got lucky :P

That would be Terran Conflict, the expansion coming out in like..5 days. IT HAS EARTH AND JUPITER AND SATURN AND URANUS, OH MY! No pluto though, goddamn scientists.
The only bad thing about TC is it means Xtended is going bye-bye, until they make a new version, that is. It'll be interesting to see how TC handles Earth stuff compated to Xtended, though.
Few question about this game. Can I run the game reasonably well with 3.2Ghz Pentium 4, 1gig of ram, and a 256mb GeForce 7800? Also X3 Terran Conflict. Is that an expansion, stand-alone and should I play through Reunion before trying that out?

I played it when it was new on a 2.4ghz machine, 1gb, and a nvidia 6800. Had to turn some of the eye candy down, but it was extremely playable. So you should be fine.
The biggest source of framerate problems in the game is asteroids and fleet battles. There's mods out there to turn down the number of asteroids, and fleet battles are extremely rare (unless you seek them out).

I have a setup similar to that, the difference being a 2.2 Ghz Dual Core Processor, and a 256mb GeForce 7300. It is very playable, but will slow down a fair bit in sectors with many asteroids, and large battles, although most of the time its still playable. I am not sure if Terran Conflict will run differently, as there are some modifications being done to the engine, but it probably wont effect performance to much, if at all.
A lot of large mods will slow down things to, XTM adds a whole lot of new sectors and ships that need to exist, cutting down my FPS by 10 frames, and Race Response fleets also cuts off a few more frames.
Terran Conflict is Standalone. Its a good idea to play through Reunion as the learning curve is inverse, the two games will be similar enough that you might have a idea of whats going on if play Reunion for several days before :P

This is very similar to Trade Wars.
And I would play through X3:R first. X3:TC is a direct sequel.
Sudden depressurisation?

Freelancer style mouse flight perhaps? I can but hope, might actually let me enjoy the game for a change.
In one of the trailers I saw mouse aiming, like in Freelancer.

I'm a decent pilot, I just kept running into groups with two novas. Bad luck I guess.

3.0GhZ Intel Dual Core E8400
2GB o' RAM DDR2-6400
512MB Sapphire ATI Radeon HD4850
Vista Home Premium w/ SP1
Considering a system with those stats didn't exist when the game came out, you'll probably be able to run it with all the eye candy at max.
I'd still run an asteroid reducing mod though, the number of rocks floating around is ridiculous and really doesn't improve the game at all.
