So is this new X3 game an expansion or a whole new stand alone game? I've always had interest in the series, but never got into it because of the learning curve and what not.
It's worth doing kinda because it's the quickest way by far to build your argon rep to the point where you can buy a TL, which is the most important ship purchase in the game.

Every guide I've read has said that buying a TL is pointless, or does that only apply to X2? Aren't they only used to transport space stations?
Those guides are stupid. TLs are awesome. You are not a real man until you own a TL.
Yeah, just like how you're not a real man until you've been caught doing an act which is illegal in most countries and ended up having one of your balls surgically removed because of severe biting. There's nothing wrong with it! Animals are our friends too!

On a completely different side note, who's pre-ordered this or are y'all waiting for it to be released and waiting on others views and reviews?

I've got a spare copy of Portal, if anyone wants it message me.
And as far as preordering goes, I don't really see the point. I'm just going to get the Steam version when it's released, but it's not like Steam's going to run out or something.
So, what do you guys like to do for your first station? I was thinking a Silicon Mine in Ore Belt, or maybe a Power Station someplace, or a Spacefuel station someplace with a customs patrol (so I can scan the poor bastards leaving my space-mooshine still and then arrest them myself).
I have one UT going now, and I'm in my LX, at this point I just need to farm some cash for my first. For some reason my game has stupidly active Pirates though, I went into LaMoo... whatever... out in the boonies and got attacked by about 75 (I counted) pirates. It was asinine. Might have been related to the weirdly hostile Pirate Anarchy Port in the corner though.
Where do you guys like to put the HQ? Other than the M7 and the free M6... what do you guys like to do after moving past a Nova Raider / LX?
Edit: Holy cow, that blog post... I wonder if starting as a Khaak (or Xenon, if it's available) will still get you a campaign or something. That would be the ultimate game, something I want to try after beating X3:R or X3:TC's official storylines. You know, start as a Khaak, KOS to *everyone*, and play the whole "enemy of my enemy" thing to get yourself out of KOS, then build up a merchant empire.
I wouldn't open a station until you have a fleet of UTs. Around then. Then set up an XL power complex in Elena's Fortune. Then put drug and booze factories around it. Lots and lots of drugs and booze.
My current plan in game (read: Tonight as I watch Keith Olbermann and Rachel Maddow) is to...
1. Get Satellites in Argon and Boron space for my UTs to find deals better.
2. Repair my LX (It's still at 50% and will cost about 4 Million Credits to fix)
3. Get another 4 UTs (I already have 1, but it's in a dinky little Argon runner)
#2 is probably not as important, except I hate flying around at under 100 speed. Not a real issue as I can gank anything outside of a Xenon J or K that I run into.
What's a good ship to move into once I outgrow the Nova Raider / LX? I hate to go with the M7, it feels beardy, but honestly, I donno anything about M6s or above.

Oh jesus christ you can play the game like Freelancer now. Left click navigation, right click firing. Oh that's a nice change for new people.

Another important change is the new mouse control. You can steer your ship by pressing the left mouse button in space and keeping it pressed while the ship turns towards the mouse cursor. This steering method is known from the game Freelancer and works very well - that way it's possible to play the game almost completely with the mouse: The scroll wheels adjust the ship's speed, and you fire your lasers with the right mouse button. The lasers will even fire towards the mouse cursor! But on the other hand, in this case you'll have to live without the Auto Aim feature. If you don't want to keep the left button pressed all the time, you can turn the cursor flight mode on and off permanently with the space bar. (Some playtesters prefer the scroll wheel button - of course you can customize the controls.)

So I tried to transfer over my save games from one computer to another. Loading them crashes the game )= Did i forget a step somewhere or is it just not advised to try and transfer save games between computers?

Are we also talking about the upcoming X3: Terran Conflict? Is that just an expansion pack? I ask because, if I get into this at all, should I just buy the steam package of both games?

Question(which may have already been answered.): Do I need a Steam copy to play this game with the PA folks?
I have a copy of the game, I just bought it before I saw it on Steam.
*EDIT* Wait, you can play this with other people right?

I don't think so.
It's a massive singleplayer game.
Or maybe I just block out a multiplayer menu option every time I load it because I'm thinking of my next trade run.
Steam just lets you yap at your friends while playing issal.

It's instant. Once you get in range, you hit the button, and *poof*, you're docked.
Doesn't seem to happen for ME... I get close to a station, hit shift-D, and then autopilot kicks in.
Yeah, that's the autopilot docking, though. You have to buy the Docking Computer extension, then bind a key to it in Controls (I used / ), since it doesn't have one bound by default (the manual says Shift-D is it, but that's wrong.)
Oh man, I didn't think about the probable use of the Steam overlay. That'll be cool I think.
My best choice I ever made for a first station was a Spaceweed factory in one of the Teladi sectors. I forget which sector it was, though...it was one of the ones at the top of the map, closest to Argon space. You can sell lots. And lots. Of spaceweed there o_O
And as previously mentioned, Universe Traders are probably the best thing you can get for a first investment. Then use the money they make you to build factories.
I think managing an empire will be -much- easier and more fun this time around due to the ability to command wings instead of individual pew-pew ships. I always felt tense and bogged-down going through my cluster-fuck list of ships trying to do something.
Well, I just broke down and got it over steam... is the campaign mode worth doing or should i just stick to the sandbox universe?

all right, I've repeated this like a broken record for a million times now, but seeing as how interest in the game is resurging, I'll say it again: Download. The. Taxi. Mod. It basically gives the TP an actual, unique function, it's a nice way to make cash, and it's very, very well implemented. get it.

Now THAT makes me quite happy.
Although, I do have a mint condition Saitek Aviator joystick just sitting around collecting dust. Hm, would you X3 vets say it'd be better to go with a joystick or a mouse for your first playthrough?
An M6 is more of a prestige thing. I built one of each, not because they're useful but because it's a nice thing to have.
I don't use the M7 because it's obscenely broken. There's something about "oh here's a ship that can take down an M2 and it's pretty fast and has good shields and can mount gamma PSGs"
If you're in an M7 and you turn on your turrets, you win.
I'll admit I haven't really been keeping tabs on this, but are there any other really juicy bits out there asides from the wings and the ship boarding? Like if the boarding is only ship-based or can be taken against stations as well? How about the engine and the game's data structuring? Will it be easier to mod stuff this time around, and will it let us actually mod things like station resources/products and the like?
So I take it no one has ever used a M6 or better ship before?
I know even when I had the M7 most of my time was spent jumping out into my LX and taking out annoyances...
Sadly, the only good M6 I've seen is the that one O-something model from Xtended (which's only useful it it's a sodding M3 on steroids) and possibly (Xtended spoiler)
the ones used by that new alien race
though I honestly haven't played and checked it for so long so who knows about that. One of the biggest gripes I've got about X is that the power curves when going from one tier of ship class or equipment class or what-have-you are plotzed up something fierce, with each lesser level getting beaten by about an order of magnitude or thereabouts, which when all's said and done heavily favors M3s over anything else: 5s and 4s get annihilated through sheer brute force thanks to the 3's usual HEPT compatability and having between 5 and 15 times the shield capacity, 6s just don't have the kind of fire concentration 3s can muster (what is it, somewhere from 4 to 8 forward guns your typical 3 can mount?) and given enough time several 3s can even take down 2s and 1s owing to PPC rounds having the unusual characteristic of lazily fluttering through space instead of being the gigantic Fuck You balls o' fire you'd think they'd be and giving fighters plenty of time to am-scray.

What is the purpose of the "Docking Computer" upgrade? You're able to autopilot into the dock without any special upgrades, so I'm stumped.
They typically give you a ship to use to prevent you using a pimped out ship to make it trivial
the plot sucks

Ohh, so it's one of those purchases. I see.
Not that I ever got far enough in the game for that to apply. Never even got a single station.

The long term goal is to get a self-sufficient energy factory, which you can sell off, or eventually use to power your weapons factories.

Prolly. I do that with a lot of games. I can't guarantee it'll work though.
