Fraps Screencaps every 10 seconds, starting from one side of the station to the other at 275 m/s. For thine viewing pleasure... low res settings in game because I didn't want it to destroy my system trying to cap at 1920x1280 with max settings and then raping my internet uploading them
Oh, also PNG's not JPG's...so it could take a bit to load each one depending on your connection, not the best quality since Photobucket rapes the resolution even lower, but it can give you an idea of the scale of this station.
I was under the impression that buying and fitting Fight Command Software to a UT meant that the UT would buy and deploy Fighter Drones when it came under attack, instead of just jumping away straight away. Is that right? I don't think I ever fitted any of my UTs with FCS, unless I'm mistaken.
So there are a lot of versions of this on Amazon, which of these should I get?

I've been playing this all day today and I've got to throw my 2 credits in as well. Yeah, the starting M4 the Terrans give you is a beast, especially with 4 Electromagnetic Plasma Cannons. Let me put it this way: I don't fear Novas in it. Speaking of the Terran start, I've done a few of the missions, and so far they've flat out given me 4 Rapiers (M5s) and an upgraded Discoverer. You can take the EM Plasma Cannons from the Rapiers for your personal use, and sell the ships for cash moneys.
Defending station missions are a great combat way to earn money. The base pay's been 100-300k for me, plus caps. I've managed to cap a bunch of pirate ships so far, I've got a Suzanowa I think I'm gonna keep for now, and I even managed to cap a Gladiator (M8). That thing was worth 2.5 million on it's own, so at the moment I'm not wanting for cash. And again, the Terran Sabre is great for these, I can blow away the M5s/M4s/M3s without breaking a sweat, and the M8's not any tougher as long as I stay out of it's turret radius. The last one I did even had a pirate Osprey (M6) show up, and while I had to dart in and out doing strafing runs on it to whittle its shields down, once it was down to the hull 4x EM Plasma Cannons ripped the thing apart.
One really annoying thing happened to me though. I capped those pirate ships in Circle of Labor, and as I'm going through menus to get them sent off to a shipyard, this Argon Military Cerberus comes barreling through the jumpgate, totally pissed off and out for my blood. I have no idea what got the captain of that ship so ticked, since I'm otherwise on good terms with the Argon and the Argon Military, but he's not accepting an apology and him and his escorts attack me and my ships whenever they spot me. To get my busted up pirate ships off to safety, I had to go buy a Magnetar (Argon TM transport that can dock 4 fighters) to load my haul and outrun the psychotic Cerberus.
That TM comment reminds me: are big ships still unable to only dock with shipyards and equipment docks, or's it finally occurred to station designers to try stretching out a big pressurized tube to their ports?
Question about shipyards: It seems most ships are out of stock (nearly all the M and L versions). Is this a random thing where the shipyard will eventually stock some, or will they never carry those ships?

The only difference between the S, M and L versions listed in shipyards is what shields they come packaged with. You can buy the S version and buy it the same shields as the L version separately.
I have been finding the massive terran stations to be a bit of a pain, since it makes the autopilot want to circle waaaaaay out away from them if it needs to go around one, and it tries to start the docking approach from 20 km away as someone mentioned. And yes it still tries to do the whole approach at 40m/s. It's actually faster to just manually dock than let the autopilot do it with the SETA running.
There are certain places that if my view is pointed at them, the game just lags all to hell. The most specific spot I've seen this happen is in the system PTNI Headquarters. If I can see any part of the center of the sector where all the asteroids and stations are, it gets super laggy. If I keep my view pointed away from the center it works fine. I don't know if it's the stations or the asteroids or something else, since asteroids in other places don't cause it, and that number of stations in other places doesn't cause it. The biggest difference I notice is that the place has a new large station model, so that might be the culprit.
Can anyone explain the process of automating trading to me? I just got enough money for a Baldric, some shields, a gun and some engine/cargo tuning for it, but I have no idea what to do to tell it "ok start finding good trades and doing them, here's some cash, hop to"
To start a sector trader, you mainly need the Trade Command Software Mk3. The Teladi equipment docks stock it, I think. Install that software on the ship you want to do the trading, and it should add the command "start sector trader" to that ship's command menu.
Trade Command Software Mk1, 2, and 3, are required at the very least.
Perhaps Navigation Software Mk1, fight mk1, 2, and special mk1 and trade extension system(not sure about these)
Then, open up the command console, for the ship(not piloting it) and select Trade> Start Sector Trader then pick the section you want it to start trading in.
Once the pilot of the ship gets to level 10 (will be a number next to their name when you check the ships command console) and you make sure the ship has at least 1 25mj shield and a jumpdrive installed, you can set them to universe trader, and then the money shall pour in.
You don't have to give them money, because they use the money from your player account, and all their profit goes right back into your account.
If you don't have the reputation with the Paranid to set the sector trader in Empires Edge as recommended, work on getting it because thats the best place to level up your ST. I found that Queens Space(From Argon Prime, 1 west, 3 North, 2 East) was a decent enough place to dump your first ST if you don't have the rep with Paranid yet.
Basically, I ended up buying every extension software I could buy for the Mercury from the argon equipment docs(even if I wasn't sure if I needed it)...but you have to get the Trading System Extension Mk 3 from Teracorp HQ in Home of Light for 550k credits, plus have mk1 and mk2 already installed.
The Teladi also sell it at all their equipment docks, I'm pretty sure. And there's plenty of Teladi systems near the Terran gate.
You need the fight command software for universal traders, but not for sector traders. Neither need the special command software.
I tried leveling my ST's in Empire's Edge in Reunion, and it didn't seem particularly better than other systems. Any system that has a lot of stations that make goods that other stations in that sector use works well.
I both curse and salute you for getting me back into X3. I finished X2 and barely got into X3 around this time last year, then set it aside for other games. I'm glad to have come back and finished the storyline, and gotten a taste of the trading, stationing, and SHOOTING STUFF that I missed from space sims. Having learned both from this thread and from the many guides and FAQs out there, I've become quite the menace in my Nova Vanguard (I find the sacrifice of top speed to be well worth the extra shielding and hull).
I just got my first M2, and I pretty much just have it keep the peace in border systems until I need some heavy support, then I call it to jump in for some EPIC TABLE TURNING.
Got a couple of questions though, before I disappear back into the game:
1. I have yet to find a guide that describes the Alpha/Beta PBEs. Are they anti-capital or anti-fighter? Or are they some massively destructive "both" option, ala PSGs?
2. Having completed the main storyline (now working on the bala gi missions) I have an ore mine in paranid prime just sitting there complaining that it doesn't have energy cells. I set the buy price on energy cells as high as possible, and the sell price on ore competitively low, but no one seems to want to play ball. Is that a bug with that particular station, or am I doing something wrong?
Correction: PBEs are shit for serious combat, but great if you're trying to do capturing. Just assign one to weapon setup two, get the shields down, and then tap the fire button until the target bails. Other than that, the only things they're good for is anti-missile/drone defense, but it's moot since the typical ship capable of mounting the things tends to be completily unfazed by missiles and just laughs at drones.
Heh, I had an interesting lucky streak last night. Coming back to Heretic's End after a mission, I came upon a wounded pirate demeter limping the other direction out of Circle of Labor. A few pew-pews later I had myself a free cargo ship. After sending it over to a dock for repairs I continued on to Heretic's End, but upon approaching the terran station there I noticed some large explosions near the gate to Sol. I went to investigate and saw a large group of terran corvettes moving off, and a bunch of cargo containers. One of these had 16 poltergeist missiles in it.
Not as much of a score as a 3M ship, but still pretty good.
So I was running in 1028x760 and it went much smoother, the only problem is I have a widescreen monitor so I have to run it windowed if I don't want it stretched. 1680x1050 is its native resolution, so I tried 1280x800 which should be the same aspect ratio, but it doesn't seem to work right. The bottom of the side menu bar thing is below the bottom of the screen in that resolution. I am greatly vexed!
I have been playing this all afternoon and having no luck at all.. I havent capped a single ship in this game! So I decided to do an assassination mission, find an "average" difficulty one paying out 300k.. kill off the target, and start wiping out his escorts.. last bloody fighter has Mass Drivers and only goes and causes 150k of hull damage to my Sabre.. And now one of the plot missions require me to have a TS ship, and I hadnt actually got round to buying one yet.
Now that I think about it I havent accomplished anything so far in this game and I've been playing for hours.. this scares me a little.
Did you know if you fail a "return this ship to me" you drop in rank?
A fucking LOT?
I dropped from "Federation Guardian" (5th from the top) to "Confirmed Insurgent" (3rd from the bottom), because a Demiter they had me return had a top speed of like, 10.

I liked using Paranid Prime, actually. And some others that aren't as memorable.
It levels up STs roughly ten times faster than any other system.
Yeah right, The Wall is where it at, man.

Oh park your Buster up Argon One, I'm right.

B. So is that station. You may as well junk it to be honest
Well, there's the jumpstart I needed. Things are getting interesting!

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
So M8s count as fighters not Corvettes? Freakin' AWESOME!
What is it, like smallest->largest: M5, M4, M4+, M3, M3+, M7, M8, M6, M2, M1?
M5, M4, M4+, M3, M3+, M7, M7M, M8, M8M, M6, M6+, M2, M1, M0, actually.
Why?
Now that I think about it I havent accomplished anything so far in this game and I've been playing for hours.. this scares me a little.
This is important and isn't mentioned at all.
Oh, and TP doesn't count, as it doesn't have the "add in" CLSS that the script checks for.
Did you know if you fail a "return this ship to me" you drop in rank?
