Yeah, the only mission's I've been doing are Station Defense. I've tried some of the Escort Freighter Convoy missions, but those just seem absurd. The convoys you have to defend only move at like 50m/s, and their AI seems to totally wig out when they get near stations or the jumpgates themselves. I've had several of these fail because the freighters get wedged in a station and keep ramming it until they explode. I've even lost a couple of the things to them getting stuck in and ramming the gate itself. On top of that, waves of pirates attack them like every 30 seconds. This gets really awful when the freighters get close to the gate, at which point they slow down to position themselves properly, but when the pirates attack they turn to flee, which then means once I've cleared the pirates out they have to turn around again, still at 50m/s mind you, and try for the gate again. At which point more pirates show up. I've only managed to complete one of these escort missions, but the pirate caps have made up for it. Still, station defense missions are the way to go. Capping the M8 seems easy and rather lucrative.
As for the plot missions, unless someone's already done it and I'm just missing something, I think mine's borked:
My current mission is: FOLLOW: FREE ARGON TRADING STATION.
...
It's right after the "Meet contact in Nathan's Voyage" I flew towards the station, and a cutscene played where the voice said, "You're late, follow my ship. NOW!"
At which point the camera pans over to... the space station.
Unfortunately all my saves are now after this happened, because after trying to figure out how to follow a space station I said screw it, I'm gonna go blast stuff and rake in cash.
Well I dont think I will be trying that one. The real question is - did you take it like a man or reload?
I reloaded.
Next mission I got was a combat mission from a freighter. "Escort me to XXX" Very Hard.
4 Susanowas of various subtypes (hauler, raider, etc) and a shitload of Raijins appeared. My client died but I captured 2 Susanowas (including 1 raider) and a Raijin Sentinel. I'm repairing them right now, don't think I'll USE them but it's nice to have.
I am torn about the Susanowa Raider actually, it comes with full shields but no weapons. My faction with he Argon is already high enough to buy everything except M2s and M1s though, so... I want to get my Terran faction up so I can buy either a Scimitar or a Katana, but, it's slow going as the Terran sectors appear to not get combat missions.
So I accidentally got a Argon station upset at me in Treasure Chest. How do I get it un-pissed? Normally I'd reload but I have a free M8 awaiting me picking it up.

If its anything like X3 - its near impossible. In standard X3 you were supposed to be able to go to a nearby pirate base and you would get a BBS option for a "hacker" to reset your standings, but dont know about TC. Have you tried comm-ing any patrol/police ships in sector and apologising for firing?
And I have just been grinding station defense missions and I'm up to 3 million quid! This is no-where near as painful as the old X3R start where it took 3 bloody weeks of energy cell runs to get credits.. The new mission system is pretty awesome.
The Goners in Elysium are fucking wankers, they want me to help them build a new temple but they pay jack shit. They paid me 27k to fly 3 freighters over (they did pay ship cost too though). They better spawn a temple when I'm done setting them up factories or I will come back with a capital ship and rape them.

I'd stick a couple of torpedoes up their asses anyway, just for old times sake. Fuckers been running me ragged over the entire X series..
Yeah, about the Goners, what's ridiculous is they want resources to build the temple, so they need you to go haul stuff over for them when the mines are in the next sector over. Are they too lazy to do it themselves? They'd better fork over jumpdrives once I'm done shipping them stuff.
Ok this game looks just nineteen kinds of incrediby awesome. But I have just a couple of questions before I grab Terran Conflict...
I can just start with TC for my first game in the series, right?
And if I go and piss off factions, I'm guessing from the looks of it that there's no way to make them un-pissed at me?
And it IS possible to get your own capital ships and build your own empire and sit back and cackle as your glorious army sets about conquering everything in your name, only to intentionally destroy your own empire and plunge the entire galaxy into a state of complete chaos and anarchy, just because you can can?
Okay, I have my 1mil, I've got the software upgrades cept Trade M3, which I can get cos I'm in Teladi space, and I've got an M5 waiting for me in Home of Light.
Unfortunately I'm half way across the galaxy with no jump drive and a ship that does 100 max.
Crap. Hope I can find a nice long podcast or something.

Oh, and is this game going to consume my soul?
TC is the best game to start with, although I have had some problems with Audio and Performance, although X games are really buggy when they are first released, but you can expect a whole bunch of patches to come out soon.
There was a BBS message in Reunion that allowed you to donate to a charity thing belonging to one of the factions, which would increase your trade rank and your relations with that faction. And killing any Pirates/Xenon/Khaak in their sectors will make them like you aswell.
You can build a giant chain of factory's so you generate $Texas every second from trade with other factions, aswell as automated traders earlier on. You can buy every type a ship a faction has, including capital ships from their shipyards provided they like you enough, and in TC you can also send boarding parties to capture large ships, which is M6 and above.
The stations and ships of the factions will eventually re spawn. In X3 there is the sector takeover script which will stop this from happening, and there's always the solution of parking 10 battleships in every sector.
With the Player HQ you can make ships, and its possible to set up self sufficient factory complexes. So your empire wouldn't really collapse if you pissed off every faction, it would just be very slow to keep the military rolling. But if your economy relied on getting commodity's from external sources at that point, then it would eventually collapse.
And X3 hungers for souls.

It doesn't really hunger.
It just takes them anyway.
I mean why not?

I did that mission the other day:
Make sure you have the guidance turned on for that mission and see if it points you to a ship parked outside the station you were told to go to. Go to this ship and initiate comms and the mission will continue (at least thats how it played out for me).
I myself am having problems with another mission later in the same sequence (the one where you deliver 200 teladiumian to the military outpost):
I need to pose as a freighter delivering 200 teladiumian to the military outpost in argon sector M148. Only problem is the sector is off limits to me and I get shot down even when I take my freighter there with the teladiumian. I've tried going in a fast ship to try to outrun the police to the station but no dice. Has anyone completed this?

Are you supposed to get
a freighter and cargo to deliver fom the Teladi or do you have to raise the funds yourself to get them?

You move your own stuff, the way I did it was to set the freighter AI to move there on its own, this does not trigger hostilities, once its docked get in a fast boat and haul ass to the station. You'll have about 30 seconds to undock, pick up two spacesuits and jump out before you get shredded so bring a jump drive. Took me a few tries.

I'm getting my credit card and logging into Steam as we speak.
So I'm at 15 million credits and second best Argon rep.
I could easily buy a Centaur or hell in a little bit maybe even The Argon M7.
And at this rate could probably buy a TL or maybe even a M2 before the Terrans will sell me an M6.
I noticed that the M6, hell even the Terran M1 and M2 use the exact same weapons as a M4. There are some differences, but not many -- the Terran M6s start being able to luanch dumbfire missile rounds ("Matter/Antimatter Torpedoes"), the M7s and higher start getting "Starburst Shockwave Generators" and the big shits get "Point Singularity Cannons".
Still, it's WEIRD seeing a M6 using the exact same weapons as a M4. I'm not sure I'll want to stick with the Terran ships after all.
Oh, one good thing though, their M6 can hold 5 200MW shields. That seems like a LOT.
Weirdly, doing a Very Hard or Hard combat mission gets you a SHITLOAD of Rep with the faction who owns the station. Of course, I don't think the game expects a M4 to be able to win in a dogfight between 2-4 M6s, but, c'est la vie.
The new mission system is awesome. I have no doubt doing this would have been possible in X3:R but finding the missions are suuuuuch a bitch.
Make sure you have the guidance turned on for that mission and see if it points you to a ship parked outside the station you were told to go to. Go to this ship and initiate comms and the mission will continue (at least thats how it played out for me).
Yeah, no, my mission's screwed. The character I'm supposed to be talking to is sitting inside the station, in a space suit. And has no other dialog options for anything. I guess I'll just have to resign myself to building a massive kickass empire or something.
so if all the weapons are the same grade, what's the point in capital ships
what the hell is the point of a paranid M2 if you can't put gamma PSGs on it
just regular homo ones
Instead of Alpha/Beta/Gamma guns, there's new capship scale Quantum Singularity Cannons and other such big boom makers. They took out the different versions of weapons and added new guns in their place. But really, why don't you just try it and see for yourself?
I finally got a sector trader working. Is there any easy way to see how many credits are being spent/made short of checking my wallet every 15 minutes?
Again, thanks for the tips CT. Going to be playing through the Bala Gi missions and honing my X# skills in reunion for a while before I pick up TC. Now that the storyline crap is over I can let my UT's roam free again. I had em on ST duty in crappy sectors while the paranid were being paranids. It's good to have that income flowing in while you work at the missions.
Also, cock encounters were quite amusing with all the scripts recommended here, most of my cock encounters resulted in at least 3 abandoned scouts or clusters. Doesn't feel right flyin em though, so I haven't bothered to keep one.
I'm kinda torn about how I like to engage enemies too. I definitely like the M2 and the turret rape that is given to my enemies, but I also like a proper dogfight in my nova. I wonder what kinda drugs I was on that I tried to play X3 using a 360 controller...
I still have no idea what I'm doing. I'm just tooling around doing story missions so far. I killed a pirate and got his Elite, but I have no idea what to do with it so I have it limping to the nearest ship yard. And I don't know what to do with my Saber.
Well I can't buy anything because I don't have any reputation with anyone. So I figure I should run some missions and maybe people will like me. Is this a bad plan?
Apparently I just had to wait for another communication before the mission could continue. From what I've read on the official forums it seems like several of the missions are kind of counterintuitive like this, with "hidden" things they expect you to have or do. Now I'm to the part where I've got to "deliver" crap to the Argon Military sector, which from what I've read is kind of bugged and not working properly.
And I've just traded in my Terran Sabre for a Terran Scimitar. Whoa baby. It's got good speed for an M3, and it rips M6s apart like they're nothing. My only complaint is that it blows up enemy ships almost a little too quickly, the only ship I've captured since buying it was left with only 1% hull. And it's gonna take forever to repair an M8's 25000 hull with my dinky repair laser.
Now I just kind of feel bad for the other ships I've got. I've still got that Suzanowa, and I managed to capture a kickass looking Pirate Blastclaw Prototype, but the Scimitar so totally outperforms them. I'm still keeping them, though, cuz they look cool. Maybe once I've got an interstallar empire going I'll be able to just cruise around.
Also, apparently one of the new weapons is a fucking FLAMETHROWER. I saw a group of pirates off to one side of a sector, and went charging in. Because, you know, there were only a half dozen Novas. But right before I got into weapons range, this wall of fire streams towards me and stripped my shields and most of my hull in no time flat.
Well, given that I have essentially zip intrest in any of the plots, I decided to start off with a Custom Game. And I now have... basically no idea what I'm doing, period.
Flew around some, checked out a couple of sectors, but got completely smoked on the first combat mission I picked up. Fighting's a little harder than I was expecting it to be... any tips on that?
In fact, hell, any tips period, like on making some cash and getting going? The game is complex as all hell, but despite my total inability to get anywhere so far I'm... strangely drawn to it for reasons I can't quite seem to explain. Possibly because I'm thinking ahead to when I shall be the overlord of the entire universe.
I've found that using something heavy on the ctrl key makes using the suit's repair laser real easy. I start it up then go get a drink or something.
So I quit late last night when I got past the mission I was stuck on.
Minor spoiler, nothing story related:
Protip: You're going to need 4 sats or 4 advanced sats to do one of the missions, and they're hard as piss to find when you need them, so grab them when you can. I spent about 3 hours looking, finally found some in Merchant Haven. In theory, you could drop one then scoop it back up over and over, however...
And slightly more mission spoily:
I was given a Cutlass (Terran M3+ -- slow (about a max speed of 150-175 iirc), only 4 weapon slots, but with 2 turrets on front AND back and like 6x25 shields) and sent into a sector to kill an enemy TL and his 30-40 M3 / M3+ escorts.
Gotta get used to the new ship, as I was getting my tail stomped into the ground for my trouble -- I just couldn't move out of the way of the brats shooting me apart. I think I am gonna change my front turrets to "Attack Enemies" instead of Missile Defense.
Things the Missions do not warn you about:
1. You need 4 Sattelites of some kind.
2. You need Cargo Life Support on your Sabre -- a TP will NOT work, it's bugged.
3. You will need a TS of some kind to deliver minerals.
