Not really a serious Computer Gamer....

But I was lucking enough to get a Wii over the weekend - I experienced it first at my brother in law's house and we had a blast playing it together. Another brother in law and his family came over on Sunday and we laughed for two hours, just playing the Wii sports.

My question is this: what are some good games to get for non-gamer types? Something that my wife would like to play (she likes the Wii Sport tennis)? I've heard that Mario Party 8 is good, as is Mario Cart. Any other party games out there that I should consider?

As for me, I like the first person shooters. I've played a lot of WWII FPS (Medal of Honor I, CD1, and CD2) but lately I've spent more time playing tabletop games (Command Decision, a WWII grand tactical game). I'm looking at getting Metroid Prime and Twilight Princess - are there any other games I should be looking at?

Final question - this is my first console I've had since the original NES (back when I was in junior high ) - is it worthwhile to rent games from Blockbuster, or is it better to buy them? Do people rent first to see if they like them, and then buy them, or do people rent a game, beat it in a week, and then return it (and never pick it up again)?

Thanks for helping out a newbie!

Well if it's short(and the grand expanse of the internet, which is primarily devoted to porn and videogame reviews, will let you know)there's no problem with renting and beating it. There's been more than a few 5-7 hour long next generation games recently. If the developer wants more people to drop 50 or 60 bucks for a game, they should make it worth it! Granted though there are other factors. Resident Evil 4 on the Gamecube couldn't have taken me more than 10 hours I think, but I've played that game beginning to end several times, plus the bonus levels and stuff

If you get old Gamecube games(the Wii is backwards compatible, right?)I'd get a gamecube controller and hook it up to the Wii(err they have those I hope)Metroid Prime 1 is one of my favorite games, MP2 is pretty good, never played 3

I had a Wii briefly but forgot to bring it with me when I moved(I'll recover it someday)but one of the few games I had played was Twilight Princess, but I wasn't terribly enthralled by it.

Although you say you used to have an NES, and that means you have fond memories of Mario, then I must suggest the obvious, SUPER MARIO GALAXY. It's cutesy old school platforming fun

There are couple of FPS for the Wii but I dunno if they're good, and I can't think of any strategy games out right now

Edit: Don't forget that if you hook that bad boy up to the internet, for mere dollars you can download lots of old NES and SNES games and play them on the Wii.

Well since you're just now getting back into gaming, I'd say rent a few games before you do anything. Nothing like spending $50 on something you'll play once.

For casual users I'd recommend the following games:
    • Mario Party 8
    • WarioWare
    • MySims
    • WiiPlay (includes another Wii-remote)

For your FPS stuff, I'd recommend picking up Medal of Honor 2 (newest Medal of Honor game) as it has the best control scheme you can ask for. On top of that, the game runs at 60FPS. May not mean much to you, but the game feels really fluid.

For tactical stuff: I'd recommend at least renting Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn for the Wii. It's a great tactical game. Albeit not WWII or anything like that (it's fantasy), but it's a very strategic game. Give it a look, or head over to Games and Technology, there's a thread there that is full of awesome people willing to explain the game a bit more to ya.

RE4 is a good shooter for Wii. The controls work really well witht he wiimote. It's not an particularly easy game but who doesn't like zombie headshooting goodness?

    Oh, one more question -

For the FPS, how is it using the remote to aim? Does your arm get tired? Is the control steady? Does it work well at all?

It's amazing. If you play Metroid Prime 3 and/or Medal of Honor 2... Red Steel was really clunky and hardly worked. Also Resident Evil 4 as well. Rent Medal of Honor 2 at Blockbuster since it's up your alley when it comes to FPS games. If you like it, try out Metroid Prime 3, that's another really good one.

EDIT: For me, it's as close to a keyboard/mouse setup as I'm going to get on a console.

For your wife - Rayman Raving Rabbids. 1 or 2. Or both.

As far as more "casual" games, I would suggest Super Mario Galaxy as well. I played around with it at gamestop, and have asked my friends, and needless to say it will be the first game I buy as soon as my wii is repaired. For your wife, I would look into Cooking Mama. I haven't actually played it, but my fiance has looked at the box and watched gameplay videos on youtube, and is demanding we rent it.

As far as strategy, I know they released Battalion Wars 2 recently. As far as I know it seems to be getting good reviews. Finally, I heard all the bad stuff about Red Steel but gave it a rent anyways, and ended up buying it. Granted, at the time there werent really any other FPS's out, but I didnt have any problems with it and found it to be a lot of fun. Nothing like picking up an uzi and shooting it "gangsta" style...

I bought Cooking Mama day 1. While it's fun, the controls are really awkward, and the voice overs are just... terrible. It's fun in multiplayer because you look like an idiot. :)

Totally agree with that. The girls that messed around on my Wii enjoyed Monkey Ball as well.

For me, I don't much care for the system. Though I will take a stab at Metal Slug(s) from time to time.

Elebits is another good casual game. My girlfriend is hooked on that game.
