Really interesting piece from the MTV games blog: Should Bioware make a Godfather game?

Massive article, so I'll enclose it within spoilers:
I played EA’s “Godfather” game last year. And while it was a solid enough interpretation of the “Grand Theft Auto” open-world formula, it did not feel much like I was playing ”The Godfather” movie.

I started playing BioWare’s “Mass Effect” a few weeks ago. And, well, I’m only exaggerating a little when I say it felt a little like I was playing “The Godfather” movie.

How “Godfather” was “The Godfather” EA game? It had lots of shooting, driving, and twisting of merchants’ arms. It was never designed to ape the film. It told a story that ran parallel to it, focusing on the experience of a young man hopeful to join the Corleone family.

But is that the “Godfather” fantasy? The classic ”Star Wars” fantasy involves swinging lightsabers or flying starfighters. The James Bond fantasy requires gadgets and beautiful women. I look at the picture at the top of this post and I’m reminded that the Godfather image many people like me have is of the Don, sitting in a dark room, listening to the pleas of the desperate, raising a finger, muttering decisions and being untouchably powerful without directly soiling his hands.

Is there a lot of violence in “The Godfather”? Sure. But there is even more potent… talking. That’s not really the recipe for a fun game, most people would agree. It certainly isn’t the recipe for a popular console game.

    Or is it?

BioWare developers, this is where you come in.

Image courtesy of Paramount Home Entertainment.

The first several hours of “Mass Effect” have very little action. The first full planet the player explores is buzzing with activity, rich with quests, but low on gunfire. Players of the game can go hours without emptying their ammo clip, but they just might have fun anyway. And they will likely have that fun just by having their character talk. Anyone who has played “Mass Effect” or read press about it surely is familiar with the sci-fi role-playing game’s innovative dialogue wheel. The wheel lets you pick your character’s emotional responses rather than select from scripted lines. It is designed to make conversations between the player character and the many aliens in “Mass Effect” more spontaneous, more natural, and more engaging.

Consider BioWare’s strengths. The reviews I’ve read have been very positive about “Mass Effect”’s conversation system. They’ve been less uniformly glowing of the game’s shooting controls, which may reflect BioWare’s development priorities. Overall, though, the praise for this game has been quite high.

So if we’ve got a developer that’s really good at making a game fun for players who would like to ask questions first and shoot later, and if we’ve got a blockbuster license in “The Godfather” that is famous for its verbiage as much — and I would argue moreso than — its violence, then how about we make a deal?

Here’s the added bonus. EA just bought BioWare. And EA Games president Frank Gibeau has already gone on record in BusinessWeek saying that “Mass Effect”’s dialogue engine could benefit other EA projects. (There are also rumors that a sequel to the game is in development).

Surely others of you out there can picture scenes from “The Godfather” movies (or books) that would work with the “Mass Effect” dialogue wheel?

I sent my theory to BioWare public relations a couple of weeks ago, asking for any of the studio team’s thoughts. They’ve not commented yet. But I’m hoping for the thumbs up, if not for the commission.

I remember my father surprising me by asking me about “The Godfather” game when it first got written up in The New York Times. This was a license people who would have nothing to do with epic video games could find intriguing. But a “GTA”-style game? Not for my dad. Something that plays and sounds like the movies he and so many other people love?

    I think that has potential.

    http://multiplayerblog.mtv.com/2007/11/29/request-to-ea-please-put-mass-effect-developer-bioware-on-a-godfather-sequel/

Such a good idea. I would play a Godfather RPG by Bioware for so long.

I spent close to 4 hours last night trying to get through that one fight. Finally did by the hair of my teeth. Was I supposed to go do some side quests first to level up more or something or did I just bring the wrong squad with me? Garrus and uh.. the soldier chick, whatever her name is. I'm an adept.

I am glad it's hard (even if it's me being bad at it is making it hard)... After playing through assassin's creed and being nigh invincible, getting destroyed in 1 or 2 seconds when you make the wrong choice is refreshing.

I think in a lot of ways, this fight does depend on levels despite that enemies in the game scale. Reason being is that you get so mobbed in this fight that, without proper biotics and tech to shut down some enemies while you're killing others, you can quickly get overwhelmed without ever taking a shot at the boss.

All my characters were level 30-ish when I did this fight, and honestly the only trouble I had was figuring out
that fighting Benezia was useless. Literally there is no point in trying to take her down directly at all, because she is too well-shielded and will mow you down in seconds.

I'm sure there's been a lot of advice given on this particular battle, but I never read any of it because I didn't want to be spoiled on the happenings ahead of time. I tell ya though, I damn near came back to these forums after I fucked up the fight 4 or 5 times just to see what I should do.
4 or 5 times?! I was trying to beat it for hours! But.. I did get it done on my own, eventually. :)

Bioware is so good at making story-driven games, but MMO's cater to such a different crowd that it's hard to tell this early how successful they could be.

That said, though I do like Star Wars, I think the MMO potential was sucked dry with SWG. I'm not saying SWG was good or bad (I kinda fall in the middle on that) but the Star Wars universe is starting to become the WWII of game settings. Am I alone in the sentiment that news of a new MMO just isn't exciting anymore? I feel like I've been burned by broken promises and overhyping too much...

BG2 is still my all-time favourite game, but, and I don't know why, I've not liked fantasy (as in D&D style fantasy) settings for any other game. I even far prefer SW tabletop roleplaying to D&D roleplaying. I can't pinpoint what it is, but the BG series is definitely the anomaly and therefore I'm not all that excited about Dragon Age, either.

It has a different feel to most other fantasy games, a lot more realistic style, compared to the cartoony look of the later NWN games and whatnot. It has has great gameplay.

If Dragon Age is an action RPG, rather than an old school style overhead game, it won't be as good. Not saying that means it will be bad either. Kotor and Mass Effect are good games.

    No.

Each character you make has a 'career' save, which can have multiple saves from any point in the game.

If you start a new career. these saves stay tied to your other character.

    Just finished it. Wow.

What an absolute epic. Amazing. Texture pop-in and load times aside (both things which could be improved upon in the sequel and probably even in this one via patching) the game was absolutely epic plot-wise, had a great amount of sidequests and while the combat felt a bit out of place at first it quickly found it's place and felt more natural as you levelled up and managed to equip weapons that felt like they weren't working against you.

Amazing, though. Very, very happy with this game. Nothing but good stuff to say, really. Absolutely cannot wait for the next two. I really hope Bioware keeps their promise and ensures all 3 get onto the Xbox 360 and don't spill over to the next gen. Hopefully the trilogy will be finished (and finished well) rather quickly with the engine and whatnot complete.

Oh, and Bioware - make sure ME2 reads right off of your ME1 save file to see how things ended. I don't want to have to go through that rubbish that KOTORII had. What - Revan was a man?! I always thought it was a woman! etc.

This could quite possibly be my GOTY, though. I can understand why it won't be GOTY on a wider scale, but for me, I don't think anything'd been a more engrossing experience.

Uh, yeah, that starts to happen at level 5. Up to and including level 5, you gain 3 points per level. Six to... I don't remember off-hand, it switches to 2 per level. Then it decreases to 1. Your party's points decrease at a faster rate than yours.

Surprisingly I actually find myself rather uninterested in DLC, unless it's actual episodic content that adds to the plot between games. Not sure how much I would be bothered about extra planets and stuff that aren't story relevant.

And, fun story: I got all the weapon mastery achievements in this runthrough - except sniper. In order to rack up the sniper kills, I spent the whole of the last few missions using only my trusty sniper. I was sad when I got to the end boss. No chance of getting it this playthrough, then. I kill the last boss. Achievement unlocked. 'Twas the 150th kill. Should've seen my grin.

Based on the encounters shown in the trailers, it's, uh, the planet you find Liara on. They changed the name and the circumstances, but I was under the impression those early trailers were built more as demos of what they wanted the final game to look like than chunks of the actual game.
