And, fun story: I got all the weapon mastery achievements in this runthrough - except sniper. In order to rack up the sniper kills, I spent the whole of the last few missions using only my trusty sniper. I was sad when I got to the end boss. No chance of getting it this playthrough, then. I kill the last boss. Achievement unlocked. 'Twas the 150th kill. Should've seen my grin.
A very similar thing happened to me with my infiltrator, with overload. The last overload I ever cast was the one that unlocked the achievement moments before the end boss died.
Had anyone else had a problem unlocking these achievements, I've been using the assault rifle as a soldier exclusively since I started the game, and somehow I haven't logged 150 kills with it yet? that seems... odd.
What the hell happened to the planet caleston that was in a bunch of trailers?
did i miss something hilariously obvious here?
Based on the encounters shown in the trailers, it's, uh, the planet you find Liara on. They changed the name and the circumstances, but I was under the impression those early trailers were built more as demos of what they wanted the final game to look like than chunks of the actual game.
Ah ok.
I see.
I just left the game on the title screen and it played the tv spot trailer and it mentioned caleston. then i remembered it from like a billion previews.
I'm trying to do a renegade run this time, but you know what? I still can't do it. While the paragon/renegade system is substantially less retarded than KOTOR's light/dark dichotomy, it still boils down to one bad stereotype or another if you want the achievements.
They should call it Sycophantic GI Joe Throwback and Juvenile Asshole.

Oh, and Bioware - make sure ME2 reads right off of your ME1 save file to see how things ended. I don't want to have to go through that rubbish that KOTORII had. What - Revan was a man?! I always thought it was a woman! etc.
This was confirmed to be true by a BioWare employee in this thread.
I'm pretty sure he included a disclaimer that they were planning to do that. Not a 100% confirmation.

That's only if you're dedicated towards playing like a juvenile asshole. Which for you I guess isn't much of a stretch.

Make sure your henchmen aren't stealing your kills.
Speaking of achievements, here's a small tip. If you're already at the very end of the game, but you're sure you're only a few shots away from the weapon/biotic achievements, there's a little trick. Use them as much as you can, and then when you beat the game, it automatically saves. You can then reload the same game, and your total will be the same. I was using Overload throughout the last fights hoping I'd get it, but no go. Reloaded the save game to see the renegade ending, and I got it half way through.

The autorifle achievement seems to be harder to get, for some reason. I've noticed this in my recent game, as well. It took me most of the playing time to get that, then I switched to Shotguns, and got that in maybe two hours of play.
Why can't I not let some pissant bartender slow me down? Where's that?
Also: assault rifles make it a bit harder to make the killing blow. An easy way to help yourself out: use an ammo mod that alters the graphical effect of your kill. Chemical/Polonium rounds work well, since they add the DoT effect and green glowiness, and then they disintegrate when you kill them. If you set your party to not have such an effect you can tell when you got the killing blow. Party members tended to steal a lot more kills than when I was using the sniper rifle.
I think someone also mentioned that kills and uses are added on to your next playthrough (although, I'd think that would have to be the same career).

Ok after 35hours of playtime I finished my first playthrough.
I went Paragon, got completionist, quarian ally, turian ally, power gamer, tactician and a bunch of other stuff.
The game was AMAZING (except for maybe some sidequests that just paled completely compared to the story planets).
Question about something at the end:
Is it just me/my version (german) or did Saren lose is cool techno-bass voice at the end of the game? When I encountered him in the Citadel Tower, he spoke in a completely normal voice without any metallic echos and stuff. Did you guys get that too?
Now listening to the credits, which are pretty awesome.
Oh and I need Mass Effect 2 NOW. Cause the story is actually superb, which I didn't really realize until my 20th hour of play or so, cause I was ONLY doing side missions. Go me.
I don't know if anybody knows this or cares, but for those of you who don't like the idea of buying a strategy guide just for the art book, they're apparently selling it seperately

Also, the endings make it somewhat easy to translate
The main differences are: Humanity's role on the council and who represents them. The other races will still have representatives... the models may change, but nothing else need change about them. So maybe a few different conversations and maybe a different sidequest or two. It's actually pretty awesome that they can do what amounts to a pretty large change for the universe without changing the sequels that much.
I want to see ME3 deal with the consequences of some of your actions in ME1. That'd be awesome.
Like, the Rachni queen can help you out in the final battle of ME3 if you saved her. Or maybe she'll side with the enemy....

All I want from the sequel is someone answering my "I have a ship in the orbit, I could bombard them" with "Yeah, that would be great!".
I found the monkey in the back of the cave with the module, and then got jumped by the geth, but my journal doesn't seem to have updated, it still says go find the module... did I miss something?

As far as I know, you just need to get on board of the Normandy again.

Yup, went back to the normandy and the quest turned grey.
I just don't get it. My roommates all refuse to put points into anything besides weapon skills and intimidate, despite being Infiltrators and Engineers, and play as homicidal jackasses who apparently love reloading save games. Is this enjoyable? Am I not right in suggesting that they should maybe give Wrex some points in an actual biotic power or two?
Is anyone playing this game as anything but a total renegade dick besides me?
I've been mostly Paragon myself thus far. Most of my Renegade points have been one or two points here or there where I kind of liked one of they slightly renegade-ish side of a gray area.
I'm playing Chaotic Good, mostly. I've got renegade points, but not all that many.
In order to get the hardcore and insanity difficulty achievements, do I need to start the game with a fresh, level 1 person or can I select the higher difficulty on the Normandy before the first mission (the prologue)?
I tried it from a fresh level 1 person, but it is stupid hard because of the crap weapons and lack of skills that you have. Most enemies ate through me in about 1 second.

WTF, why do I get less skill points now that I'm a higher level?
Uh, yeah, that starts to happen at level 5. Up to and including level 5, you gain 3 points per level. Six to... I don't remember off-hand, it switches to 2 per level. Then it decreases to 1. Your party's points decrease at a faster rate than yours.
I don't remember ever getting 3, so I was confused. Your teammates go to 1 at 21.

I didn't unlock it until level 15+. Your teammates steal your kills quite frequently.

According to BioWare, the moment you activate the beacon on Eden Prime, your difficulty is locked in. You can change it before then, but if you change it afterward the achievement will not unlock.

The best place to get your shotgun achievement (or take a big chunk out of it) is probably
The thorian creepers on feros. Their are alot of em, and most die to a single blast of the shotgun. Not to mention, you can keep you allies back far enough because of the tight corridors, so it makes it even easier

Has anyone tried playing a Biotic on Insane difficulty (From level 1)? I'm just curious about how high their resist/immunity rate is. The start of Hardcore as a Soldier was rough enough.

The trouble with playing an Adept on Insane from Level 1 is that you face flying drones FIRST.
Flying Drones are the bane of Adepts everywhere since disabling biotics don't work. Warp and your Pistol are really all you have. However, if you make good use of Kaidan's Sabotage it's completely doable.
Once you've passed the prologue you can hustle around the Citadel and do Sidequests for a long time before journeying out into the black.

Character themselves doesn't do small favors for people (unless they're going to get good pay), despises getting their mission questioned and shows no respect to the questioner, and is fairly ruthless. However, they do not go around randomly killing everyone and abusing their crew, disposable as they might think they are.
Man, playing as an Adept is so much fun that it should be illegal. I'm a one man wrecking crew with Singularity, Lift, Throw and Warp. Specializing as a Nemesis sure helped as well, the Geth are my playthings right now. Nothing brings a smile on my face like when I get the drop on those wall climbing Geth fuckers and hit them with Lift+Throw.

Character themselves doesn't do small favors for people (unless they're going to get good pay), despises getting their mission questioned and shows no respect to the questioner, and is fairly ruthless. However, they do not go around randomly killing everyone and abusing their crew, disposable as they might think they are.
