What Guitars Can I Use?
Xbox 360 Rock Band owners are free to use the Guitar Hero II X-plorer, the Guitar Hero III Gibson Les Paul, or the Rock Band Fender Stratocaster.
PS3 owners do not have the luxury, and have to use their wireless Strat that comes packaged in with Rock Band. The following chart, therefore, only applies to the 360 version. The Game
(Excerpts From Wikipedia)
Rock Band is an upcoming music video game under development by Harmonix Music Systems, published by MTV Games, and to be distributed by Electronic Arts Partners. The Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions are scheduled for a North American release on November 20, 2007 at a price point of $169.99, while the PlayStation 2 version will be released in North America on December 10, 2007 at a price point of $159.99. The game will be released in Europe in early 2008.
Rock Band will allow players to perform in virtual "bands" by providing up to four players with the ability to play three different instrument-based peripherals (a guitar peripheral for guitar and bass guitar sequences, a drum peripheral, and a microphone). These instruments will be used to simulate the playing of rock music by hitting scrolling notes on-screen. Players can interact through both online and offline multiplayer capabilities. The game is Harmonix's first project since development duties of the Guitar Hero series were transferred over to Neversoft.

The culmination of what Guitar Hero I and II had hinted at. How psyched am I for this? Super-psyched. There's a very good chance (we're talking 75% here) that this could be become my favorite series of all time.
The user interface. Left is guitar, middle is drums, right is bass, vocals run along the top. It was confirmed that the positions of these can be switched.
The Instruments
This sexy replica of the Fender Stratocaster is (from a style perspective) a vast improvement over the GHII model, looking much more like an actual instrument rather than a toy. Each fret button is still color-coded, however it's much more incognito this time, as the colors are only visible on a side-view, perfectly placed for the player. Other features include a five-way switch for different sound effects, and an extra set of the five existing fret buttons for all your soloing needs.
Downstrum not working on your Strat anymore? Not afraid to fix it yourself? THIS WILL VOID YOUR WARRANTY.http://www.quartertothree.com/game-talk/showthread.php?t=40188
THE GUITAR THAT COMES WITH THE 360 BUNDLE IS WIRED. THE GUITAR THAT COMES WITH THE PS3 BUNDLE IS WIRELESS. If you happen to own both systems and really want a wireless guitar (and GH3's controller end up not working on Rock Band), this is going to be a large part of your decision. To accommodate all the instruments, the 360 bundle will come with a USB hub.
Four pads (snare drum, tom-tom, hi-hat, and cymbals), one kick pedal. Real drum sticks. I imagine you know what those look like, and they're easily replaceable if lost. According to reports, it's easy to assemble in less than five minutes, and you can even set it up on a flat tabletop if you don't like the stand. Easily the newest part of the game I'm looking forward to the most.
It's a microphone. One tends to sing into these devices. It picks up individual vowels and consonants, and if your bastard friend happens to be playing the solo on "Highway Star" or you really want to imitate Will Ferrell, it can be used as a tambourine or cowbell by simply tapping on it. Don't want to tap? Hand full of axe? Just make random noises, like "pow pow pow." All the real rockers do this when people aren't looking.

The text is there, but I guess if it needs to be huge, it can be done.
Any more details about sticker dates? Mine's Oct 18. I still can't tell if it's defective or I just suck.
My new strat has tight, sticky buttons (they pop up slowly) that make faster songs pretty much unplayable. My first one had loose buttons, but they worked flawlessly, and I was better at using it than I was at using the SG I had for over a year.
The PS2 Gibson SG that came with Guitar Hero.
At least EA and Harmonix are on top of the replacement process. My replacement is coming tomorrow.

In other news I'm trying to move on to Hard drums and it is proving more difficult than I thought. I'm passing the easier songs, but not without some difficulty. I'll have to keep practicing I suppose.
Damn.
Moss, damn...didn't know you had vocal stylings in addition to all your other skills. Expert vocals frighten me a bit...I think I can sing about everything on Hard, but I know there's some that I have enough trouble with that are going to be a BITCH on expert.

Do you have a link to a tutorial or list of what is needed to do this? I play rock band at my friends house, and this would sure alleviate some problems with roomates friends, who after an hour or so can't take the "tappa tappa tappa" anymore.
Listen to our podcast, read our articles, tell us how much you hate it and how to make it better
Sadly, no. There are murmurings that HMX would like to patch online BWT in at a later point, but it's little more than an off-the-cuff remark and most likely won't happen.
I wonder if I should make some quiet mods for my drums, now that other people are jumping on the bandwagon ... I'll wait to hear back from people's reports.
Oh, well. Thanks, Lunker!

link was posted in the official forums. There's a bit of discussion there also of people who had tried this and for the most part the results have been very good. Hopefully I'll know for myself tonight.

Or would just making sure they log in as not-me, who downloaded the songs, work as well?
I figure if I can pull the songs they don't like, they'll be more encouraged to play.
:winky:
I'll post some pictures (and maybe some video) when I get home tonight, but basically we bought 4 cheap mousepads (standard cheap rectangular kind sold at Staples), cut them in circles roughly the size of the drum pads, and attached them via double sided tape.
Turned out that the double sided tape wasn't actually sticking very well and the mousepads were slipping down, so we also attached the pads to the top of the set via some small bits of electrical tape. Not quite as pretty - but it's a bit of a rough job anyway.
Overall verdict on noise? It helps a *lot*. It's not at all inaudible, but it's a much more muffled sound and doesn't carry nearly as much.
The pads still work well, too. On practice mode all hits were registering. It's hard for me to give a definitive opinion about whether they were missing any notes though - I decided to step up my drum difficulty to Expert for a bit so it's tough to say whether missed notes were due to me flailing about or a lack of sensitivity. If pressed, I'd say that I'm getting the very occasional pad miss on my yellow pad. On the other hand, I did put together a 200 some odd note streak on the Hard version of "Say it Ain't So" (where I wasn't flailing about so much) which included substantial amounts of yellow pad tapping, so it may just have been the difficulty level.
The minimum "hardness" threshold for picking up hits is definitely higher now - but relatively soft hits still register. Hitting on center also seems more important now.
Doing it again I'd pick up a very slightly thinner set of mouse pads to use, as I'm still slightly concerned about drum sensitivity.
Overall, I'd definitely recommend doing something like this on your drums. Huge noise reduction, doesn't do anything to your kit that would void the warranty (unless I missed something about taping padding on top of the pads...) and doesn't affect playability in any way that I can definitively notice (which means that unless you're scoreheroing or something it's good enough that it won't matter)

I started to do that.
But it turns out that the last two customers they had were there for drumsticks for the exact same reason.

Just ordered my copy. I'm not into drums and I'll just wait for Harmonix to release the wireless version of their guitar and buy that later on.

I decided to jump right from the end of Medium to Expert.
I'm not entirely sure what I was thinking... I know it's going to be *really* hard at first, but I'm hoping that I can accelerate my learning curve by throwing the really hard stuff at myself and hoping that I can survive.
So far I've managed to pass (ie. 3 star) "Say It Ain't So" and "Creep". I can only imagine what the harder songs will be like.
I'm having immense trouble with the following sequence (which repeats constantly) in Creep. I can get enough of the notes in it to not fail, but I'm not sure I nailed the full thing even once at full speed. Hence no overdrive and no streaks for me...

Mine was Oct - 9 and the strum bar on my strat died last night. Sometimes it will not register a strum and others it will double strum. Gave the drums a good test last night, especially rolling on the red pad at it seemed fine though the mic jack on it might be dead as I couldn't get my headset to work with it.

So, I played last night for 2.5 hours with a different friend, and AGAIN, there was not a PEEP of sound coming through the headsets during our quickplay online multiplayer rockband experience.
We started a chatroom in the dashboard and that worked okay, but gave us a weird echo. Better than nothing I guess. I was plugged into the drums, and our friend in Chicago was plugged into her guitar.
Has anyone had any luck with the ingame chat of RockBand working? Where are you supposed to be able to talk? Anytime? Does that include during song selection? Anyone else finding that it simply does NOT work for them?

Of course, I RMAed the guitar last Wednesday, and my UPS tracking is still stuck at billing info received (with some people who RMAed it Monday already having packages in transit). I think I'm going to have to call EA again during my lunch hour.

I basically did the same thing. I went up to hard on a couple of the easier songs (Say it Ain't So, I think I'm Paranoid), and felt like I was basically playing every note already. Playing on expert is a binary experience for me, meaning I can either 5-star or fail miserably.
I guess I should mention that I have no drumming experience and have a completely non functional blue pad.
Protip: Don't switch to vocals without leaving the private chat first.
Somewhere in the options menu of the Dashboard you can browse your hard drive and delete whatever you want. To download again, just get it the same way you got it before, and yes it's free.
Not sure about the other question.
