What Guitars Can I Use?

Xbox 360 Rock Band owners are free to use the Guitar Hero II X-plorer, the Guitar Hero III Gibson Les Paul, or the Rock Band Fender Stratocaster. PS3 owners do not have the luxury, and have to use their wireless Strat that comes packaged in with Rock Band. The following chart, therefore, only applies to the 360 version.

rb_compatibility.jpg

The Game

(Excerpts From Wikipedia)

Rock Band is an upcoming music video game under development by Harmonix Music Systems, published by MTV Games, and to be distributed by Electronic Arts Partners. The Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions are scheduled for a North American release on November 20, 2007 at a price point of $169.99, while the PlayStation 2 version will be released in North America on December 10, 2007 at a price point of $159.99. The game will be released in Europe in early 2008.

Rock Band will allow players to perform in virtual "bands" by providing up to four players with the ability to play three different instrument-based peripherals (a guitar peripheral for guitar and bass guitar sequences, a drum peripheral, and a microphone). These instruments will be used to simulate the playing of rock music by hitting scrolling notes on-screen. Players can interact through both online and offline multiplayer capabilities. The game is Harmonix's first project since development duties of the Guitar Hero series were transferred over to Neversoft.

(In Casual Speak)

The culmination of what Guitar Hero I and II had hinted at. How psyched am I for this? Super-psyched. There's a very good chance (we're talking 75% here) that this could be become my favorite series of all time.

rockband-01.jpg

The user interface. Left is guitar, middle is drums, right is bass, vocals run along the top. It was confirmed that the positions of these can be switched.

The Instruments

214px-Rockband-guitar.jpg

asset-43070.jpg

This sexy replica of the Fender Stratocaster is (from a style perspective) a vast improvement over the GHII model, looking much more like an actual instrument rather than a toy. Each fret button is still color-coded, however it's much more incognito this time, as the colors are only visible on a side-view, perfectly placed for the player. Other features include a five-way switch for different sound effects, and an extra set of the five existing fret buttons for all your soloing needs.

Downstrum not working on your Strat anymore? Not afraid to fix it yourself? THIS WILL VOID YOUR WARRANTY.
http://www.quartertothree.com/game-talk/showthread.php?t=40188

THE GUITAR THAT COMES WITH THE 360 BUNDLE IS WIRED. THE GUITAR THAT COMES WITH THE PS3 BUNDLE IS WIRELESS. If you happen to own both systems and really want a wireless guitar (and GH3's controller end up not working on Rock Band), this is going to be a large part of your decision. To accommodate all the instruments, the 360 bundle will come with a USB hub.

525px-Rockband-drumset.jpg

Four pads (snare drum, tom-tom, hi-hat, and cymbals), one kick pedal. Real drum sticks. I imagine you know what those look like, and they're easily replaceable if lost. According to reports, it's easy to assemble in less than five minutes, and you can even set it up on a flat tabletop if you don't like the stand. Easily the newest part of the game I'm looking forward to the most.

802674b.jpg

It's a microphone. One tends to sing into these devices. It picks up individual vowels and consonants, and if your bastard friend happens to be playing the solo on "Highway Star" or you really want to imitate Will Ferrell, it can be used as a tambourine or cowbell by simply tapping on it. Don't want to tap? Hand full of axe? Just make random noises, like "pow pow pow." All the real rockers do this when people aren't looking.

As for the thread title, I don't want it to mislead, but I don't think anyone believes that any Dylan will be available as DLC, ever.

Oh, wow. Didn't even notice the text before. I guess the bolding did help. Either way, I'm glad I got the 360 version.

Any more details about sticker dates? Mine's Oct 18. I still can't tell if it's defective or I just suck.

15th and earlier is the first (possibly better?) version, and 17th and later is another kind. Or something. Only 15th and 17th were discussed. So I don't know what mine (18th) could be.

Okay, found out a lot of interesting stuff yesterday.

Basically the guitar I have is completely different inside than what Ben has. It has leaf switches mounted vertically directly across from each other on either side of the strum bar. There's no metal, or spacers, or contacts involved, just plastic sliding against plastic.

The sticker on this box was dated Oct-17-2007. Interestingly I also have another copy of the game (preordered through Amazon) dated Oct-15-2007. I decided to open this box up as well to see if it's components worked any better. This "older" copy of the game has the guitar Ben is talking about.

This "older" guitar's strummer is a LOT less flimsy feeling than the "newer" guitar I got, which feels almost like it's loose. It seems fine for now, except that the effects switch is broken and only switches between Chorus and None.

They obviously changed design midway through production. The new design isn't much better than old, however, because after a couple days use the UPSTRUM is now only working intermittently. I'm not sure how this is even possible given the mechanism for the switches being used, other than that my guitar has a faulty switch. There's nothing inside to bend or get out of alignment. The guts of this model of guitar looks very janky inside as well - there's masking tape being used all over the place to hold wires down.

    *MAY BE IMPORTANT*
Additionally, the drum kit from each box is also different. The "newer" kit (Oct-17) has less pronounced ridges along the rim of each pad - the lip is only a few millimeters raised. The "older" kit has rims that are maybe a centimeter above the pad.

This is important, because the newer kit has a major design flaw with the red pad - if you single-stroke roll past a certain speed it will stop registering altogether. This literally makes the following songs impossible to get through on Expert:

    (Don't Fear) The Reaper
    Train Kept a 'Rollin
    Run to the Hills

The (Oct-15) dated drums with the higher rims do not seem to have this problem. I objectively tested this by going into Practice mode on the Drum Roll section of Train Kept a 'Rollin, and I can consistently score at least 85% on that section, and well above 90% on several tries with the older kit. With the newer (Oct-17) drums, using the EXACT same technique, I was getting low 50's with 60% tops, which means failure if playing the song in-game.

If you guys have this drum set with slighly upraised lips, I would highly recommend you test this yourself. Others at the Scorehero forum have been reporting this as a problem - the only thing that reportedly may help is wrapping the pad in tape in order to make it more responsive, but this is really only masking what has got to be a design flaw. I think this hasn't been reported much yet because a lot of people are not playing drums on Expert and it's only the newer kits (2G drums?) that have this error. The reviewers with advance copies of the game didn't have this particular revision of the controller, and like I said it looks like the older model doesn't have this flaw.

I've heard EA's RMA is at this point cross-shipping new parts if you give them a credit card number with no questions asked. I think most of you can figure out if your guitar has a problem pretty easily, but I'd recommend you get your drums tested. You're going to be very pissed off in another few months when you can't play Don't Fear the Reaper on Expert drums because of defective hardware.

so I just got back from a 2 hour concert with a couple of my coworkers. One guy rocked the strat, our manager banged the skins and I belted out the vocals. Only one failure (Guitar/vocal = medium, Drum = expert) on the Stones. Everything else was cake. I need to close more often with these guys. AND I need to fix my x-plorer (Rewiring it with a star power button and an extended neck).

Well damn. I threw away my box some time ago. That post changes nothing about the guitars; both are shitty, just different kinds of shitty. That stuff about the drum pad scares me, but after seeing the ...And Justice For All video, I was going to tape my pads anyways (just to get them extra sensitive).

Both of the boxes I got were marked Sept, but the packaging and the strat were both completely different. I can't remember what the first one was, but it was late September I think, and this one is Sept. 28.

My new strat has tight, sticky buttons (they pop up slowly) that make faster songs pretty much unplayable. My first one had loose buttons, but they worked flawlessly, and I was better at using it than I was at using the SG I had for over a year.

My Sept 27th Strat (so says the box) died in 3 days, and it was the common "hurr, no more downstrum for you!" issue. Though, between the pink flyers and the type of support they've offered, I keep thinking they knew that some of these instruments were faulty to begin with and sent them out anyway. :(

At least EA and Harmonix are on top of the replacement process. My replacement is coming tomorrow. :D

Woo Rock Band. I picked up the materials from Michaels last night to quiet my drums, the self-adhesive foam padding and felt pads. They had all the colors I needed, going to try that out tonight. I'll report on how well they work.

Moss, damn...didn't know you had vocal stylings in addition to all your other skills. Expert vocals frighten me a bit...I think I can sing about everything on Hard, but I know there's some that I have enough trouble with that are going to be a BITCH on expert.

Sadly, no. There are murmurings that HMX would like to patch online BWT in at a later point, but it's little more than an off-the-cuff remark and most likely won't happen.

I wonder if I should make some quiet mods for my drums, now that other people are jumping on the bandwagon ... I'll wait to hear back from people's reports.

Any word on the ability to erase DLC songs (Metallica) from the HD with being able to download them again for free in the future? My wife and her budding band want to know!

Or would just making sure they log in as not-me, who downloaded the songs, work as well?

I figure if I can pull the songs they don't like, they'll be more encouraged to play.

So, the mousepad drum muting experiment went forward last night.

I'll post some pictures (and maybe some video) when I get home tonight, but basically we bought 4 cheap mousepads (standard cheap rectangular kind sold at Staples), cut them in circles roughly the size of the drum pads, and attached them via double sided tape.

Turned out that the double sided tape wasn't actually sticking very well and the mousepads were slipping down, so we also attached the pads to the top of the set via some small bits of electrical tape. Not quite as pretty - but it's a bit of a rough job anyway.

Overall verdict on noise? It helps a *lot*. It's not at all inaudible, but it's a much more muffled sound and doesn't carry nearly as much.

The pads still work well, too. On practice mode all hits were registering. It's hard for me to give a definitive opinion about whether they were missing any notes though - I decided to step up my drum difficulty to Expert for a bit so it's tough to say whether missed notes were due to me flailing about or a lack of sensitivity. If pressed, I'd say that I'm getting the very occasional pad miss on my yellow pad. On the other hand, I did put together a 200 some odd note streak on the Hard version of "Say it Ain't So" (where I wasn't flailing about so much) which included substantial amounts of yellow pad tapping, so it may just have been the difficulty level.

The minimum "hardness" threshold for picking up hits is definitely higher now - but relatively soft hits still register. Hitting on center also seems more important now.

Doing it again I'd pick up a very slightly thinner set of mouse pads to use, as I'm still slightly concerned about drum sensitivity.

Overall, I'd definitely recommend doing something like this on your drums. Huge noise reduction, doesn't do anything to your kit that would void the warranty (unless I missed something about taping padding on top of the pads...) and doesn't affect playability in any way that I can definitively notice (which means that unless you're scoreheroing or something it's good enough that it won't matter)

So where are you guys finding dates on your boxes? The Closest I come is a sticker on the guitar box only that says 27607CT. I see no dates.

Bottom of the main box. Should be a round sticker.

Mine was Oct - 9 and the strum bar on my strat died last night. Sometimes it will not register a strum and others it will double strum. Gave the drums a good test last night, especially rolling on the red pad at it seemed fine though the mic jack on it might be dead as I couldn't get my headset to work with it.

Continued Rock Band Voice Issues in Online Multiplayer...

So, I played last night for 2.5 hours with a different friend, and AGAIN, there was not a PEEP of sound coming through the headsets during our quickplay online multiplayer rockband experience.

We started a chatroom in the dashboard and that worked okay, but gave us a weird echo. Better than nothing I guess. I was plugged into the drums, and our friend in Chicago was plugged into her guitar.

Has anyone had any luck with the ingame chat of RockBand working? Where are you supposed to be able to talk? Anytime? Does that include during song selection? Anyone else finding that it simply does NOT work for them?

I believe my box was at or around Oct 18th. The strum bar failed after just a day or so (no downstrums). Drums seem absolutely fine.

Of course, I RMAed the guitar last Wednesday, and my UPS tracking is still stuck at billing info received (with some people who RMAed it Monday already having packages in transit). I think I'm going to have to call EA again during my lunch hour.

Still no problems for me *crosses fingers* and my strat. I'm really hoping it stays that way.

In other news I'm trying to move on to Hard drums and it is proving more difficult than I thought. I'm passing the easier songs, but not without some difficulty. I'll have to keep practicing I suppose.

I decided to jump right from the end of Medium to Expert.

I'm not entirely sure what I was thinking... I know it's going to be *really* hard at first, but I'm hoping that I can accelerate my learning curve by throwing the really hard stuff at myself and hoping that I can survive.

I basically did the same thing. I went up to hard on a couple of the easier songs (Say it Ain't So, I think I'm Paranoid), and felt like I was basically playing every note already. Playing on expert is a binary experience for me, meaning I can either 5-star or fail miserably.

I guess I should mention that I have no drumming experience and have a completely non functional blue pad.

Rock Band (PS3) I don't really keep my list up to date, but rest assured that I have milliards of songs.

I've heard of people having voice problems, but it should work if you join a private chat with them. At least until it's fixed.

Protip: Don't switch to vocals without leaving the private chat first.

Somewhere in the options menu of the Dashboard you can browse your hard drive and delete whatever you want. To download again, just get it the same way you got it before, and yes it's free.

Not sure about the other question.

This is driving me insane. In the OP it is "cymbals" not "symbals." I know it's stupid, but it's driving me nuts.
