The correct answer is to get her "Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow"

    Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Superman-Whatever-Happened-Man-Tomorrow/dp/1563893150/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1196365465&sr=8-1

    Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Whatever_happened_to_the_man_of_tomorrow

Edit: I can't believe some jackass on Amazon gave it 1 star.

Superman's different. If you'll look at the thread, you'll see that everyone is just repeating the same handful of books again and again. It's a lot easier to read every good Superman story than every good Batman story because there just aren't that many exceptional Superman stories to read, and I imagine a fan of the character would know that and have gone over the best by now.

you're just overstating and assuming things

it's totally awesome. it's an elseworlds series that mixes superman with german expressionist films (specifically, duh, metropolis). there's a batman one and a wonder woman one as well.

Also, the Showcase Presents: Superman books are a lot of fun too. Wacky '60s-era Clark Kent mania!

Seriously, Birthright. Or Secret Identity. Or both.

All-Star Superman IS great, but you can enjoy it so much more if you get the character and the lore surrounding it.

Thanks guys for all your responses. I was leaning towards Identity or All Seaons, but hadn't even thought about Birthright. I remember reading the first two issues when it first came out, and it didn't strike me as great.

i agree. the stories start off slow. zombie slow (not the running kind.)

but orchestrates a great adventure halfway through issue 3 to the end
