I think it's safe to say, this Let's Play is still a long ways from being complete. Maybe over the winter break I'll try to figure out how to get the NES hooked up and do Megaman 1.

I was hoping Gilder would do that one, though, if only for Yellow Devil. Well, that and the platforms from Gutsman's stage, which he would have to do first, naturally.

As long as I don't pause it, I can do those platforms blindfolded. Sure, they're hard if you've never done them, but I'd expect anyone who's beaten the game to completion would only die one or two times at most.

Doing Yellow Devil without weakness? That might take a few hours.

Psh, I've played so much Megaman Powered Up that Gutsman's stage is no problem. It's like 4 times as long in the PSP game. As for Yellow Devil, he's really just more annoying than anything and boring as hell to watch. I'd just pause the video once I proved I could do it without taking damage. Or I'd do the pause trick. He has a pattern doesn't he? I know he does in Powered Up.

Yup. I don't remember exactly what it is, but the blocks always go in the same order, and once you learn it, it's much easier to remember when to jump (I think that at one point the 2nd one from the bottom goes right before the 3rd or 4th one, so you have a super-tiny window to jump between those two and it's pretty tricky, but the rest is easy).

Yup, I've seen a good speed-run of MM1 on Youtube, and there is one point where you have to quickjump between two blocks. I imagine it can be quite tricky.

I also really hate when Dr. Light refers to the pieces.
Please try this Body Parts H.
Sounds like each word was recorded separately and then put together like some automated telephone service that tells you the time of the next bus. "Next... bus arriving at.. six..thirty....eight..pm"

Shady, you need to do the glitch with that spinning move Zero has. It only works in the PC version because on the PS2, you can't hit all the buttons it requires. I don't remember what it is you have to press but if you look it up, I'm sure you'll find it.

That would've worked for the early games but then in the PS1 games, he started having conversations and stuff if you found the capsules with Zero. Which really makes no sense. Then there's also the ending to X5 which screws with things even more. But in the end it's just a game so who cares. I'm sure it'll be explained someday.

The general Mega Man community has just decided (I forget how, it's been a long time since I've looked at the official Japanese sourcebooks) that Light inputted his consciousness into some sort of hologram that's in all the capsules. The first armor was made before his death, but the rest were created by this conscious AI. Go figure, Capcom loves to screw with continuity.

The status of these holograms is not entirely clear. From Mega Man X to X3, Dr. Light speaks in recordings, with phrases such as "I do not know what has happened to you." In contrast, from X4 to X6 he exhibits clear awareness of the situation and Zero actually holds conversations with him in X5 and X6. In what is most likely a continuity error on Capcom's part, the capsules' messages are again presented as recordings in X7 and go back to being sentient in X8, where he mentions "I hope this is the last time we meet like this, X. I really do."

X8 is okay although you can judge whether or not you'd like it from Shady's videos, Command Mission is alright, X7 is garbage, and then there's the 2 collections of the old megaman games. So really the only ones you can be sure are good are the 2 collections.

Clearly, the Light capsules seem to contain some sort of AI, though the extent to which he interacts varies. Why he's sometimes more involved and other times almost like a recording, no idea.

BUT, the reason to X5's ending as I recall is that the strange properties of Area Zero (which sort of broke down the barrier between our space and cyberspace) allowed Dr. Light, or his hologram anyway, to exist beyond his capsules.

I think there has been an allusion that Cyberspace/Cyber Elves is a sort of afterlife here, though it takes one of great power to be able to maintain an "Elf" form in our world.

I have X7. Bought it for under 10 bucks clearance at The Source, never opened it. Not sure when or if I will. Might just keep it sealed as a "collector's item," so to speak.

I strongly believe that a 3D Mega Man game in the style of the Classic series could work, and then from there they might be able to do X. But instead, they jumped straight to X, and it sort of got too complicated for them.

    Just my opinion.

Hehe. I didn't like Axl at first because I played X7. In that game, Axl was the equivalent of X without the buster; his trance shot had to be charged and had to be the killing shot to get the "enemy DNA" thing, but was shot itself was weak as piss. Axl's hover ability required that you hold the jump button down until he started hovering (as opposed to just tapping jump again mid-air in X8 [I played the demo]), which didn't make sense at all. And you pretty much were forced to use him, as X doesn't become playable until later in the game (yeah, an X game where you have to unlock the main character), and Zero made the transition to 3D like an aborted fetus does to well, anything. There's plenty STILL I could go on about Axl in X7, but I think the message is clear.

Now just watching the videos of X8, I see that they pretty much fixed everything wrong about Axl in X7, and actually made him unique from X and Zero. The whole rapid fire, 8-way aiming works, and trance shots and A-trans look more usable (being able to save an A-trans sounds kinda neat actually), which are nice improvements. I do think they should of got it right the first time though. :P

So yeah, I dare you to use Axl for the last set of stages.

Actually, he may want to use Axl for the last Sigma stage. I don't remember it very well but I think there's a couple spots where you jump down and maneuver around walls of spikes so being able to slowly navigate could be helpful. However, I really don't remember if that's true. I know for a fact there's climbing up and dodging walls of spikes though.

So I played through Mega Man 5 today and what the hell Capcom? First of all, of the 8 Robot Master there are two that are moderately difficult with just the buster (Crystal and Wave, I thought and they're super easy with their weaknesses). Secondly, the level design is gross. Spikes! More spikes! Self scrolling stupid Sea-Do half level. Spikes in low gravity! Spikes in water! Spikes with conveyor belts! Spikes and those damn reappearing blocks! Oh and:
Both the final bosses of the two fortresses are most easily defeated with Beat, a tiny little blue bird that goes and pecks them to death.

That said, I vote Heat Man for reappearing blocks and insta death.

One would hope this is the case. Because otherwise, despite all his talk for a happy future for X, it means the man was one paranoid son of a bitch. The man has buried away, from my count, twelve different sets of armor. Seventeen if we decide to include secret ultimate armor. Breaking it down by capsule, that would be:

    X1: 4 capsules, 1 special capsule (fireball)
    X2: 4 capsules, 1 special capsule (uppercut)
X3: 4 regular capsules, 4 super capsules, 1 special capsule (all 4 super upgrades)
    X4: 5 capsules
X5: 8 capsules, 1 special capsule (ultimate armor via cheat)
    X6: 8 capsules
    X7: 4 capsules
    X8: 8 capsules

Even if we don't count the "special" ones, that's forty nine different capsules he would have buried away for X to find.

Granted, it's one of those gameplay aspects that's really hard to explain via story. But still. Forty nine. No wonder Light was so weak and frail at the end. Must have killed himself digging all those holes.
