Any suggestions on what I should try tanking in the mean time? I can use the practice. I'd like to run Sethekk Halls to get my Shadow Lab key, but I don't want another Steamvault debacle.

Reading my own responses has forced me to come to grips with my own nubness.
I have about 500g and one badge that I got from one of the new daily quests. I've basically just been working on quests to earn money to some day buy my epic flying skill. Before I stopped playing the only way I knew to get badges were to run Kara, but now if I understand correctly they drop in heroics as well.
they dropped in heroics before they dropped in Kara i believe
Bracers of the Green Fortress is a good craftable item, if you can find someone to craft it for you, it'll probably cost 200-300g for all of the mats, but will last until TK.

I would suggest putting more points into Protection. Combat Expertise would give you more Stamina and better hit with weapons and Argent Defender will make it easier on you healers if you get too low.
Avenger's Shield is great, however you can just use EZ-throw dynamite for pulling. AS is better threat though.
And 1 Hand Spec will be good for some extra threat.

49/12 is the premiere tanking spec, although, since you're very low on HP and avoidance, you might want to pick up Reckoning, in which case 52/9 might be a better spec.
if you want to armory me, I have 49/12.
52/9 basically gives you Reckoning, at the cost of Spell Warding, Improved Judgement, and 1 point of Deflection.
I tried my first instance today. I got invited to tank a normal Steamvaults run.
This did not end well. Hell, it didn't even start well.
On the second pull I was feared into a bog lord and we wiped. After rez, I pulled the bog lord, didn't get a heal, and we wiped. The group all quit or dc'd, but not before telling me I should have 12K health unbuffed. I'm sitting in Netherstorm quest greens, so I'm around 7.5K right now.
12K seems a little high for normal Steamvaults. I thought I read 13K for Kara. Seems like a catch-22. I can't tank instances to get gear because I don't have the right gear to tank.
Well, mostly there are crafted items plenty good to get you started, but "feared into bog lord" means you probably made a positioning mistake or something. Most of that takes practice. I am still amazed that, a year later, people still forget about pats coming up on them in Kara while I'm not tanking (and I even mention it, too: "Pull these back, the pat's coming. There it is. It's going to walk straight through here. We should probably tank it back in the other room. Hello? Oh, ok, there's the aggro..."), whereas by now I've memorized the exact position, composition, and tactics for every trash pull in the instance.
Anyway, the Steamvaults route I always use is going right upon reaching the bottom of the first stairs, not around the left. It's safer, with only one possible "fear into Bog Lord" situation, which can be avoided entirely by using the LOS on the left side of the stairs to pull the Siren up a bit and either CCing it or killing it first with stuns and stuff.

I have a prot Pally as well. Hit 70 about two weeks ago and I know what you mean . I leveled as prot so I guess I had access to the tanking gear I picked up on the way . Plus you tend to instance ALOT as prot. Anyways I really can sympathize , theres some serious gear gaps you have to fight with and sometimes it seems like not even worth the effort. Just when you get where you need to be for places like TK, SV , Slabs, it's gonna be time for heroics.
You're going to be pretty flustered then too. Theres people out there decked in S1's finest that will flat out ridicule you for having a blue ring or a quest necklace or a weak trinket slot. Just shrug it off the best you can I think my first heroic run netted me two badges and I wondered if I'd ever see more. So yeah you're going to struggle a bit just keep plugging away at it and be thick skinned for criticism . One of my favorite quips is "I have 14 K hp having 16K isn't gonna make you heal any better".
Also do the best you can and what I mean by that is doing all the right things is only going to put out the max TPS you can , there are alot of people that can easily exceed this. Run a threat meter if they are continually exceeding what you can push out for threat and they're on your meter then they realize this and don't care . they are just biting off what they think they can chew. Don't beat yourself up about it just be ready to pick up that mob/mobs off the healer in the event they die because they didn't ask for that. Most people that like to pull aggro off the tank to feel cool , stop when their repair bill climbs. healers generally don't like to heal that situation either, or like to see the ping ponging mobs.
Just some words of encouragement.

"If you don't like my gear feel free to run the instance without me," is probably a good response.
One of the guys above mentioned S1; it's ludicrously easy to get a couple of Season 1 armor pieces from BG pvp. That extra stam will make a lot of difference.
I ran a successful Sethekk Halls today, and it went a lot smoother. We were a little overlevelled for the place, but it's ok because I need the practice. Three 70s, a 69, and a 68. I wanted to get my Shadow Lab key and I ended up getting a consecration libram and the Mark of the Ravenguard as well. I went back to full prot, 46/15, and Argent Defender saved my ass on the last boss of Sethekk. I lost aggro early in the fight somehow, right after the first arcane explosion, and never got it back, so our healer died pretty quick.
I need more tanking practice, but now I feel like I have some direction as far as gear goes and I just need to learn the instances.
I thought about scooping up some S1 gear but prot pvp is rather dull, so I dunno.

I really wouldn't get the S1 gear. The grind for that isn't any shorter then the rep grinds for the better tanking pieces.

I'd go with the Kael neck over the Karath neck. http://www.wowhead.com/?item=30007.
The dodge enchant gives slightly better avoidance then the +defense.
I'd keep your current boots or maybe the Solarian boots.
I'd add the Hyjal Mace to your wish list. You guys can down some bosses there and it's a trash drop.
I'd also look at http://www.wowhead.com/?item=30083 the ring off of tidewalker.
So I have gotten my paladin to 62. At 58 I specced prot on a whim and I really liked it. Tons of the quests were easy to prot grind but now I am really not sure if this is the right spec for levelling, having hit the end of hellfire and dieing 4 times to caster type mobs.
what can I expect in the upcoming levels? what should I spec for levelling 62-70?

Hellfire is pretty sweet for prot. Zangarmarsh will probably irritate you at first, there's a few casters but the end quests are melee friendly. After Zangarmarsh things get easier, in Terokkar.
the first part is great, but the ravagers, whelps, caster birds and high level enraged boars do more damage than I can mitigate and heal back from JoL/SoL.
The ravagers knock you down, the whelps do that absorb thing that increases their damage, the boars randomly enrage.
I cant help but think that ret would let me do more damage to kill them before they kill me
I did 35 to 70 Prot . HFP was Hands down hardest leveling experience I have had yet in this game (5th level 70). do your best to run as many instances as possible you will eventually make a little network of instancing buddies. The rewards are worth it. on my server, tanks are in high demand. 10-20 min of my time in game is spent outside of an instance portal . and ultimately what the fuck you else you gonna do ? Heal?

Amani Punisher, get!
total current stats unbuffed: 15.5k HP, 16k armor, 428 spell damage, 53.5% avoidance
My prot paladin is soon going to be 68, and will be there for quite a while - I'm meant to only pull him out to play with my friends, but I got a little carried away running through PUGs. I'm thinking of playing some pvp on him to get a headstart on honour instead of just letting him gather dust, so I was thinking of speccing ret. An Oathkeeper's only ~25g, and even if I had any healy plate, I'll be buggered if I ever go back to paladin healing. This means I'll have two less points than the ones for the usual type of builds: what should I go for?
Well, mostly there are crafted items plenty good to get you started, but "feared into bog lord" means you probably made a positioning mistake or something. Most of that takes practice. I am still amazed that, a year later, people still forget about pats coming up on them in Kara while I'm not tanking (and I even mention it, too: "Pull these back, the pat's coming. There it is. It's going to walk straight through here. We should probably tank it back in the other room. Hello? Oh, ok, there's the aggro..."), whereas by now I've memorized the exact position, composition, and tactics for every trash pull in the instance.
Yeah, this. As DPS or a healer one does not need to be very aware of the layout of the instance or which mobs go where and do what. This makes me very nervous when it comes to tanking something I haven't done in ages because I don't know that stuff. At least running heroics with my prot paladin friend has let me observe what he does in places like Mana Tombs where I otherwise wouldn't have visited since a year ago. It always impresses me how he knows exactly where to LoS things, etc., but I guess when you've run the instances so many times it's just automatic. When I finally get to tank SH I'll know exactly where to pull too just from watching him do it so much, heh.
Luckily, you can wing it in most cases (Since you just need to find a wall). However you still end up running into niche spots and finding out fun things like the trees in Mr T don't LoS mobs (Woops!)

Feel free to move your camera angle in. Worst case is zoom in to first person view and see if you can see the mobs. If you can then they can see you. If you can't, then you have LoS. And you don't need a lot of stuff to block the view. In Crypts for instance you can use the piles of bones to break LoS.

It's been so long since I did any pvp as ret (before BC, really) that I'm not sure which talents are best.
if you're just doing battlegrounds, you want something like this to start off with, then going doing what you want with those last 7 points (a build with kings, heavier damage, etc)
this is the usual arena ret build, but it requires a bit of better gear (in the very least a decent weapon with a fair bit of strength)
Currently all sorts of holy. I've been holy the whole time, with the exception of the span from about 53-58, and 68-70. All my protting has been as a porcupine. I have actually tanked more instances specced holy (and dpsed one) than I have as prot (0, though I did heal an instance prot specced once..)
When one of my Roommates hunter hits 70, I'm going prot to tank while our recently 70 shaman heals so we can run some other stuff.
Anyway. I'm one successful BM run away from revered with CoT, already Revered with Shattered Sun. Should I get the Shattered Sun sword for protting? Or try and get the BM one? I have an Ancient Scepter of Sue-Min with the healing enchant on it, so I wouldn't gain much Spell Damage with either, and the DPS comparable, though I don't know how the attack speed thing would factor in. Also, I've never seen the Ogri-'la Crsytal sword on AH ever on this server.
you want the SSO mace rather than the sword, as it has more stam, spell hit instead of spell crit (both are kind of crappy), and it's fairly slow if you're alliance and wanting to use SoV on bosses
edit: oh you're horde, the mace is still a bit better though

It usually goes in this order:
"Hah! I'm behind this tree/rock/wall jutting out, they'll never see me!"
*FROSTBOLT*
"Shit! Better go out and grab them!"
*Healed to full*
"No the healer!"
*Healer dies to casters since that happened to be the pull where Avenger's shield missed everyone*
a lot of pulls in MgT go like that
it turns from a simple LoS pull where all four mobs are bunched up around a corner on me to being a chaotic fight out in the middle where i have consecrate underneath two, swinging away at another, hurling my shield every cooldown, praying that arcane torrent comes off cooldown soon so i can bring them all together, and to top it all off im running around like a headless chicken judging righteousness like a crazy fucker
