Since when the hell was it "company policy" for a site that's notorious for giving lower-than-the-average scores, to exchange sums of money for high review scores?
Don't even try to argue logic and causality with this guy. Just leave him in his happy conspiracy world.
It all about increasing traffic to the site
Right. Firing a senior reviewer who, apparently, has drawn people to the site for years whether or not they agree with his opinions was purely to get a two or three day spike in traffic. Genius, if you ask me.
Not to mention all the spam, canceled subscriptions, and various other problems this has caused.

So you don't think that sacrificing the site's journalistic credibility for some short-term cash might decrease the site's traffic in the long run?
They might be assuming the fact that Devil May Cry 3 sold well is an indication that we forgive easily.
The official website for Kane & Lynch lists two 5-star reviews that it never received. The quotes are pulled from early previews, and the 5 stars are pulled straight from their asses. It seems that Eidos is just completely delusional about their scores, if they're willing to both get people fired and completely invent positive reviews.

Pfft. Those five stars there.. those aren't "5 / 5 stars!" of a review!
Wow, Eidos are really scraping the bottom of the barrel here. IO can be a talented developer, but in this case the publisher has done irreparable harm to the game - both on the marketing front and on the publishing front.

Yeah, Eidos is really fucking up IOI's rep here. If this interferes with the next Hitman game I'm gonna be pissed.
Come on guys, it's people who kept making a Lara Croft game after a Lara Croft game over and over. You know there's something wrong there.
The last two Tomb Raiders were fucking golden, though (Legend and Anniversary). I hate that Eidos are a bunch of cockbags, but I still will play the good games they publish.
If I boycotted all game companies that were published by shady people... well... I wouldn't own any games except Tempest and Cave Story.

Let's play Mario Kart or something...
Legend was somewhat okay, Anniversary was the same old shit wrapped in a new blanket. I don't need the first Tomb Raider again, I ALREADY TOMBED THAT RAID..... or raided that tomb. Whatever. Boring stuff. Something new please.

I was just thinking this. I hope that the legions of morons that this has stirred up realizes that Io is not the enemy just Eidos (if this story is 100% true). Hitman is among my favorites.

On that same note, I need not ever play another Zelda game where I get Epona, collect a triforce, or solve the water temple.
TR: Anniversary is to TR1 what TP was to OoT.
The new moves and visuals did make a huge difference, and changed the way you play the levels a great deal.

I'm still going to buy Tomb Raider Anniversary for my 360 sooner or later. Maybe I'll just pick it up used. At least Eidos won't get my money.... Wait, publishers don't get money for used sales at stores like EB right?
No idea, I just booted single player and played it myself.
The thing that predominantly blows about Kane and Lynch is the fact that you have to use a gamepad on the console. Keyboard and mouse are a completely different story. The game seems like it missed some optimization necessary for its transfer to the console.
Sure, the story kind of devolves into a cilche family drama, but I didn't care much, I was too busy pretending I was Neil McCauley. The settings that you play in were fun for me, bank, prison, night club, venezuela. It's nothing buy-worthy, but I can say it was a fun little Heat simulator for me.
Judging from the Xbot videos, I want to gauge my eyes out at the level of impossible gameplay the reviewers seemed to have been struggling with. Recoil, maneouvering and almost everything about the game looks fairly impossible.

Err, aiming was never brought up in any review, was it? It's not like a mouse is going to make all the problems go away, especially since the 360 version of the game was probably the reference for the other versions.
Aiming's been brought up in nearly every review, including Gerstmann's. Basically, all the weapons are really awfully inaccurate, which makes the game a little frustrating.
Every day, CNet and/or Eidos is doing something more profoundly stupid than what they've been doing the day before. Anyone wants to guess what the next move is?

yeah, yeah, damn EB for having out-of-print used games that no other store has and that I'd otherwise have to trawl through eBay for and inevitably get fucked over on. bastards

Don't worry about it. I don't need to get fucked over on eBay. I know "other stores" that have the games.

Tomorrow, Eidos will announce that they're retconning every Legacy of Kain game that doesn't have "Blood Omen" in its title out of continuity, and announce Blood Omen 3, which takes place immediately following BO2 and is made by the same team who made BO2.
Aiming's been brought up in nearly every review, including Gerstmann's. Basically, all the weapons are really awfully inaccurate, which makes the game a little frustrating.
Apparently.
Right, so even if your aim is dead-on, the guns all have a wide spread of innaccuracy to them that makes even the best of aim pretty worthless. Is the point of the reviews, that is.
Or tomorrow Eidos announces they will never make another Blood Omen/Legacy of Kain game again. That actually sounds really crappy.
After having some time to think on this though, I can't say that I blame Eidos on this one. I bet a lot of publishers throw a fit about the reviews they get it's just that this time the marketing team over at Cnet decided to buckle. I mean they could have said "No Eidos, we won't do that" and the entire issue would've died right then and there.
Or.... they could have made a game as best they could and lived with the consequences. Instead of making a game, having it turn out like shit, and then trying to 'trick' people into buying. A better alternative would be for the review system to inform people that a game is bad, and that bad games will be reflected by bad sales, and bad sales will cause publishers/developers to make better games - which would result in ratings that they wouldn't need to 'encourage' under the table, and sales may be positively reflected by genuine interest and desire for a good game along with all the other marketing hooplah

what's this? expecting good games and integrity from a publisher? poppycock.
it's just a microcosm of the sad state of affairs. Why make a good game that sells millions when you could make a few mediocre games in the same amount of time and sell more.
I am curious of how much bad reviews affect sales. Not like personal anectdotes, but actual numbers. Though I imagine that would be pretty hard to actually gauge.

It's been what? Ten years since the first game? What's all that different? You still look at her ass, jump around and shoot.
OOOOOOOOOOOO GRAPPLING HOOK. I WAITED TEN YEARS FOR THAT AND IT WAS ALL WORTH IT!

As long as you return it to the store, or buy it from someone else who's used it already, the source never sees the cash.
