...so I can avoid it forever.

I was enjoying a meal of curried vegetables when I bit down on something hard. I didn't realize what it was... i bit pretty hard, it broke. Almost immediately, the fires of Hell filled my mouth. I salvaged what was left of my dignity (not much) by weeping openly, and tried to ignore the horrible manners I displayed by frantically spitting the stuff into my napkin.

This thing was woody, very hard and crunchy. Later I found a piece of it, and it has an aromatic but not "hot" smell; the heat came as a surprise.

It was disgusting.

Any idea what this stuff might be?

    Sounds like a cumin seed!

Could also have been a cardamom pod. Generally you're not meant to eat those whole, but they're somtimes used that way to flavour things.

For reference, there are pics of cumin seed here. It's hard to tell from the pics, because there's nothing to give them scale, but cardamom pods are much larger than cumin seed.

Probably cumin seed. Cardamom isn't spicy, even in seed form.

Cumin is spicy? I've been using cumin powder for years in my cooking without noticing!

It still tastes like absolute shit to the point where your body immediately rejects the taste. Don't ever eat cardamom.

Sounds like you bit into a clove.

Cumin isn't spicy at all - I would second the above. Seems like you bit into a clove, looks like a tiny bud, but it's fairly hard & woody. Having just bit into one as an experiment, I wouldn't really say it's the fires of hell by any means, but I guess it does have a bit of an unexpected bite.

It's possible that the thing was actually just disgusting and opened up my pain receptacles for the spicy heat of my curry, I guess.

I was proceeding with the meal, nothing major in the burning department... and then I encountered this and had sudden horrible pain and revulsion.

It wasn't the worst thing I've ever tasted, though. That honor is reserved for a bay leaf, which I attempted to eat on a dare. I was surprised I didn't vomit.

I think Djeet is probably right. Cumin isn't spicy, just delicious, and the seeds aren't woody. Cardamom has a woody shell, but also isn't spicy, just horribly disgusting if you eat them whole. Cloves aren't really spicy like a pepper is spicy, but it would have a really intense and unpleasant flavor if you bit into a whole one.

Eh, you kind of get used to it. I always forgot to pick them out when I made pilau rice, and now I can pretty much munch away with impunity.

I'm actually now thinking it was probably a whole clove.
