oh man, the people in the pyro video are even worse. 3 soldiers and a demo and none manage to shoot the ground?
Even though his tips are being tested in a too-easy environment, they're still valid I'd say.

Also Tag, I don't know if the config allows for dynamic changes to a setting over time. I don't think there's anything (except via Admin mods) that allows for rewriting your config.cfg without you expressly making the change.

I was very disappointed in that Well Sudden Death game, I was able to light up like 8 people as a Pyro but none died.

Shit like that happens to me all the time. Of course sometimes you luck out and get a crit streak or you've got allies rounding the corner straight after you die, but once in a while you come across a full team including medics and by the time you realise your mistake you're dead and swearing.

I think crit fire ties with a crit minigun for sheer "GAHAHAH" awesomeness in my experience, but crit stickies have netted me some frankly unfair kills.

I had a game where there were 2 heavies with medics in tow ready to rush the center point in Well. I'm a Pyro and I went out on the sniper ledge and ambushed them from behind. Both Heavies turn around and rev up and get ready to shoot at me with their Medics rushing for cover. As I turn on my fire, I get that long crit streak. Crit Crit Crit over and over. I manage to take out the Medics and one Heavy before I die. The last Heavy never got to the health packs in time.

I was giggling like a schoolgirl for a while.

Hehe I kept hiding in the middle area, hoping people would chase me into your view :)

Sadly, I was messing around with my cl_interp settings and my aim went to hell last night. I kept unloading shot after shot into people at close range only see them walk away with full health when I died, I have no idea what was happening. Guess I'll go back to the default settings even though my ping is generally only ~40 on JohnXP's server.

That is the only time I've done decent as a Sniper on PA servers with your help. I do pretty damn good on pubs but don't play them often because I just get frustrated.

Hey Job, did something weird happen to your server last night?
I was playing on a full, 23 person server, dustbowl. I think we may have been near the end of the 3rd point, but I wasn't paying attention (major gf aggro). So I get auto-kicked for AFK like 2 minutes into having to stop paying attention. When I go to rejoin a minute later, it says 0/23. One other guy joined at the same time, and for him it said 8/23 when he clicked to join. So the two of us just sat there, alone, for like ten minutes, and no one re-joined. What happened?

being a spy on the pa servers means if you shimer you have a 1/10 chance in living.

I really feel like its slanted against the spy when playing on the pa servers becuase you all are really competitent. When you go to a pug though with the same skills you wreck entire teams at once, so nothings going to change............. I know the devs said they were concerned with the curve of anti spying catching up and would do something to buff spies, but nothing has happened since then, except a delay in switching weapons and attacking (its alot harder to stab sap now since they fixed the invisibackstab exploit).

also, I changed my FOV to 90 the other night, I got a huuuuuuuuuuge performance boost, I dont know if its just something ive always noticed, but I always have gotten the worst screen tearing no matter what the computer or game, and I didnt even know there was a blur effect in the game until I saw your screenshots, moving the camera around tore that bad to me. the tearing is alot less noticible now with the FOV up alll the way.

Do you have vertical sync on? I believe tearing is caused when your framerate is too high for your monitor, and vertical sync forces your framerate to match your monitor's refresh rate, which should fix tearing.

I have no idea why increased FOV would reduce tearing though.

This is not true. I play spy just about 85% of the time on the PA servers, and i've gone 7-1 and at other times been as low as 1-4. Spy, to me, is like a roll of the dice. Sometimes you need to be extra stealthy, or sometimes just continue backstabbing in a train behind people. Every different situation creates a completely different outlook on how you can approach the attack.

I'm heading into the servers by the way guys, hope someone's coming.

I sometimes think the spy would be greatly improved if he could run through the enemy while cloaked. It's all too often that I get caught in a hallway or even a wide chasm because I can't get past someone.

Really, when you're spying on a server of decent players, you can't expect to get a 4-kill spree in just a few seconds by ambushing a train of guys, because the third or fourth (if not the second) is almost definitely going to see you coming and gut you. Sometimes you'll get lucky, but you can't count on it happening every time or even half of the time. Instead, you really have to pick your targets, going for the most damaging one, and time your attacks with the rest of your team. I'd say the spy comes in second behind the medic for "needing a mic, now", if only for being able to have your teammates rush the second that SG is sapped/heavy is stabbed.

I couldn't agree more Sith. Right after that first death or two, they're really going to be on the lookout. Also the mic idea is key. I just got a new mic last night, and it literally made me feel 200% more team informative and efficient. Also I took special care when i learned spy, to feel which way will be less likely to get bumped into or hit with crossfire. Once you've learned this, getting behind the enemy is pretty much done.

Edit: I'm going into the servers right now if anyone wants to come.

Sometimes as a Spy you just get fucked over and there's nothing you can do. Turn a corner and run right smack into a Pyro? Whoops, you're dead. But there are a bunch of things a good spy can do to minimize the chances of that happening, and you really need to be able to think fast to get yourself out of a sticky situation.

One thing I think a lot of spies need to learn is to USE THE REVOLVER. That gun is much better than people give it credit for. At close range it does about 50 damage per shot. Don't even think about trying to kill someone by swinging a knife at their front. Sometimes you can even use it instead of a backstab - for example, if you want to kill a sniper but his back is to a corner, just unload in him point blank instead and he'll be dead before he returns a shot. The extra point for that backstab may be tempting but if you're too single-minded you won't get anything done.

its a whole nother ball game on the pa server though, people follow you halfway accross the map based on one flicker, fire into blind corners as they run by areas, pyros if they have any sense generally just have the flame going at all times.

Im a fairly good spy, I do get my streaks on the pa servers (ranging to devistating to god awful), but it feels more then stacked on the servers. I think that being able to uncloak faster would fix alot. right now if you flicker you might as well just suicide, as by the time you uncloak to defend yourself youve been killed, or if you run they just fire single shots/spam to find you and kill you.

and I do put Vsync on, and it dosent help. maybe its a framerate/refresh issue, I wish I could explain it better.

Yeah, one of the biggest skills to being a Spy is learning not to touch anyone, ever. If you're invisible you'll flicker, if you're disguised you'll collide like an enemy which is immediately noticable to a good player. Just do not under any circumstances allow anyone to touch you. Still, if someone sees you go invisible or flicker it's not a death sentence, you just need to back off. They'll expect you to keep going in the direction they saw you moving, so while you're fully invisible just double back, change disguise, and find another route while they search for you.

Precisely. One thing I've noticed works well is this (best time was with an engy, so I'll use him):

I'm running forward, engy running right at me. I try to dodge, but instead clip him slightly. He notices the shimmer and turns to shoot at me, but I keep going in the same direction for a second, then immediately step right, then back, and end up immediately behind him. If he tracked me, I complete the full circle around him and keep going the way I was - he has no clue where I am or where I'm going, now.

This obviously doesn't work if the enemy has a weapon out that does explosive damage or can fire very quickly, but if that engy sticks with his shotgun, there's a very good chance he won't be able to track you.

I was in a dustbowl a few weeks ago, and the enemy had a spy (was a reg but I forget who it was). There was a time when everytime he changed disguises I happened to change classes. So for 3 or 4 lives in a row I would see my name run past myself and gun him down. He got quite exasperated when he realized what was going on. It's stupid spats of bad luck like that which keep me from playing spy.

That's because it's not a console command. In Steam, open the properties for TF2, and then click the button labeled something similar to "startup settings", and then enter the command there. Also, I don't know whether -nointro works, but I know for sure that -novid does.
