Why isn't there a sequel for (title)?

Throughout the many years of gaming I've often wondered to myself, why doesn't (title) have a sequel? And of course titles which were originally slated to have a sequel but was never followed through. Even games which already have a couple sequels and you'd like to see how the series would do in the present day.

Here's my list: (Lists are a particular staple of mine.);-)

ALIENS versus PREDATOR 3
DIABLO III
Grim Fandango 2
Monkey Island 5 (I've played the first three Monkey Island games.)
Kid Icarus 2
HALF-LIFE: Opposing Force (Haven't even played it yet but damn I want to. Source Engine anyone?)

I'm sure there's more.
