DVD player won't default outputting 5.1

I was watching some Close Encounters a few days ago, and I realized it didn't sound right. I looked on my receiver, and saw that it was only outputting in Pro Logic. I had to go back to the DVD menu and select "5.1" from the setup menu for it to output in 5.1 Dolby Digital. Is there a reason why this is? I have it so that HDMI does video, but the audio is routed to the receiver. This also causes problems because sound still comes from the TV. Anyone know what to do?
