AOL E-mail Ads

Now I know advertising is making a comeback across every part of the internet. Any site that is not a corporation producing products that make money has ads on it. It's just something we'll have to get used to (and block).

I just got an e-mail from my grandmom, who is quite computer savvy I must say for a grandmom, and she still uses AOL. (yeah, I know - she doesn't want to switch) Anyway, her e-mail had a footer that was an ad in it! Since when did AOL start putting ads into the e-mails you send?

Even free e-mail sites like Yahoo and Google I haven't noticed (perhaps I just have ignored them?) ads being put into the e-mail messages being sent, but AOL? Come on. You pay for AOL service, you shouldn't be sending out ads to your friends and family every time you e-mail them.

AOL and it's mail is free now. Has been for a year. You only pay if you want dial-up from them..

Pretty sure Yahoo had its own "Get your own Yahoo things now!" footers/sigs. Hotmail, too.

I hate being on AOL, but the thing is I'm still living with my mum (I'm 18) and I don't have nearly enough clout to decide on our ISP. Actually their broadband isn't too bad, and the AOL browser had tabbed browsing for ages before IE did. I still feel kinda like a class traitor using it though.

AOL broadband is just your local DSL resold.

Tell your mom that she can probably save a bunch of money by switching to the actual DSL ISP or cable.

Sounds like a good idea, except my mum's boyfriend is the "house expert" on PCs, cos he's an electrician. There's plenty of stuff I know that he doesn't, but naturally his word is law. He makes me switch off the modem each night because apparently if it's left on all night his PC gets screwy. Except this one, the one I'm typing at now, doesn't have that problem, so it must be something wrong with his PC. But it still means that every night when I finish on the PC, usually like 1am, I have to traipse downstairs, usually waking everyone else up, to flip a powerswitch. Grr.
