Songs in RUSSIAN!

I'm taking Russian 101.

I'd like to find songs in Russian that I can buy* and upload to my iPod so I can listen to them on the way to school and better immerse myself in the language (and make my ears get used to it etc.)

I know absolutely nothing about Russian music.

Any suggestions for bands?

*preferably from iTunes music store but that is not necessary, I can buy CDs too.

The theme song from Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex season 1 is about half Russian.

If their songs prove too saccharine-sweet for your ears, consider some old-fashioned Russian opera like Mussorgsky's Boris Godunov.

If you like surf rock (a.k.a. Kick Ass Rockenrol from Siberia), the Red Elvises did an album in their native language. Some good shit.

I think Maxiboom is pop-techno (if there is such a genre). I just like the name. Don't know much about the music, but I'm pretty sure it's Russian.

Also, along the same lines, pop vocalist Sveta Cbeta (I think I'm spelling that right...(w/o Cyrillic letters))

Moskau by Rammstein is entirely in Russian. It's their only song like that, but if that type of music is up your alley at all, it's one good song at least.

season two theme song is done by the same group and I think there is some russian in there as well (even if there isn't i think its a better song)

youtube eurovision russia to get some good songs or to find some good singers. make sure u get the ones before 2000 cuz now they all sing in english and the event has degraded to a europeanized american idol. shame, really.

The opening for season 2 had more, and better, Russian IMO.

The Red Army Choir's version of Farewell of Slavianka is nice, one of those classic marching songs. You can also just walk down the top-10 lists for Russian songs and see if you like any.

Thirded. I recommend Odessa and Natasha Loves Reggae if you don't want to buy the entire album.

This would fall under Russian music, so I might as well ask.

Anybody know of English sites where I can buy CDs by Dolphin?

So is the theme from season 2. However neither is on the iTunes store. iTunes Store's only failing is that it shows no love for Y.K.

DDT was a popular Russian 80's band, although I couldn't vouch for being good 101 music. I suggest any pop music to start off with, sinse they'll have simple words and phrases. Tatu has easy lyrics and so does Vitas.

Here's a link [youtube.com] to a Vitas song. He was popular in Central Asia when I was there.

If you can get ahold of any Fabrica Zveda stuff, all of that has easy pop lyrics.

I don't think I could take a class without sparring. That would be like a class without techniques. Sparring has value not only as an important (necessary) step in applying your techniques to fighting, but also because it provides a rush and feeling of elation, confidence, and joyful exhaustion that can only be matched by ... oh shit, I am describing sex again. Origa, the russian singer on SAC has done a few albums herself so it might be worth checking those out as well.

Also, the new trailer for GTAIV is by Serjoga, a russian rap artist so if you like that it might be worth checking more of them out.

As a former YTMNDer, I believe that was a metal cover. You might want the easier on the ears dschinghis khan version. But the song is German, IIRC>

Here are some recommendations, I don't really keep up with modern Russian music, but some of rock/folk classics are : DDT ( ДДТ), Lube (Pronounced Lyu-beh - ЛЮБЭ), Kino (Кино), and Bi-2(Би-2)
Dunno how useful those are for beginner, but better than Ghost in the Shell 2 Theme Song (which while catchy, has a wierd accent/tone)

Edit: Also Machina Vremeni (Time Machine - Машина Времени) for like really old hippy rock lol
Get Kino first though, probably most easy to get into.
