So, uh, Ultimates 3 is out and it was a really really weird book. Character designs are wacky, but the art is great. Writing is, well, different. No one seems to be quite the same characters they were in the previous Ultimates books.
Lets talk about it and decide if it is good or not because I am unsure.
As I said before, I like it well enough for a jump off book. Loeb's throwing out a lot of things from different angles that are leaving a lot of questions. The cliffhanger was actually pretty good, and sorta sucked because I like Ultimate Wanda. Also, not nearly enough Black Panther.
Next issue should be fun. Apparently there'll be some Hawkeye/Spidey action.
The issue starts with the whole team hanging out at Tony's mansion to watch the sex video of him and Black Widow while Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch make out on the couch.
"Venom" (not really Venom) chucks Thor through the wall spouting stupid cryptic lines like "Where is she? Tell me where she is or I'll KILL every last one of you!" "You know where she is!" because actually saying who he's looking for would give too much away. Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch somehow manage to disappear and have no part in the fight, even though they're in the previous panel and Tony is interrupted mid-sentence by the attack.
The new "badass" Hawkeye comes the closest to actually having character development (his family is dead and now he has an incredibly obvious death wish). It might have been interesting to just have him putting himself in dangerous situations and maybe even having another team member be hurt as a result, but they just come out and say it so that nobody's confused.
Black Panther is there for a little while. He has no lines.
Hank Pym randomly ODs, apparently because he can't stand listening to Janet bitch about her day.
About the only nice thing I can say about it is that I liked seeing Joe Mad's art again. The coloring is kind of monochromatic and muddy, but it's an interesting book to me artistically.
I'm just not a fan of Jeph Loeb's "Throw a bunch of random cryptic bullshit at the reader for X issues, then give a semi-plausible reason for it in the last issue of the arc." style of storytelling. I liked The Long Halloween, Dark Victory, and Superman for All Seasons, but his Superman/Batman arcs just irritated me and that's what this feels like.
I have hardly anything to add because DMAC just said it all. It was completely ridiculous.

I was pretty hyped up for this, so I was happy to get it no matter what. Big fan of Joe Mad's art, atlhough the story and characters were so different from the previous books that it didn't really seem like the Ultimates. It all seems pretty weird so far, but I'm looking forwards to next issue.
Captain America vs. Sabretooth! This oughta be good.
Were they gathering to watch the sex tape? I thought they were all just there and it was on the news or something like that.
No, they were having a meeting and apparently it came up. I'm guessing Iron Man gets a little loose lipped when he's sauced up.
We're both wrong. It was on the news originally that a tape was leaked and the one they're watching is one that Jan bought from a street vendor on her way to the mansion.
It's human nature to avoid it due to the high possibility of the child being born unhealthy. That's not old fashion morality, hell, it's programed into us.
The thing is, incest has been around since the dawn of time when, presumably, Adam and Eve's children were forced to do each other, so I don't know why Captain America would be dumb-founded when there was likely as much incest going on during WWII era as there is going on now.
"Get with the times, man! It's the 21st Century, everybody's fucking their siblings."
Maybe there'll be a drop in sales of the second issue. People on this board don't necessarily reflect the average comic reader. Ultimates 1&2 got a lot of buzz among people who don't usually buy comics so they wouldn't know any better. Somehow there's still an audience for Rob Liefeld and Michael Turner comics too.
I hate myself for it but I'll probably be picking it up just for the art.
everyone who bought it should be ashamed on themselves
I couldn't help it man! I was expecting so much!
I do find it funny that in this continuum there's no more Wanda's. This bodes well for all the mutants.
Actually, this brings up a good point that Marvel hasn't addressed yet. We know from Endangered Species that Wanda erased the mutant gene not just in 616, but in all other universes as well (this having been confirmed by both Dr. Strange and Forge). So why hasn't this been reflected in the Ultimate Universe? The only thing I can think of is that it happens in the future of the ultimate universe.

uhhhh
If you or your precious "science" have a better explanation for where all the people came from, I'd like to hear it.
Of course it's a joke. Besides, everyone knows that Cain - after having slain Abel - simply walked to the next town over (Nod), finding an entire community of people.
Lest we forget: the OT is, in fact, filled with incest.
Now, more on topic: I don't honestly believe Jan is advocating or condoning incest. I think, rather, she's saying that Rogers is so out-of-date that he just assumes incest is completely impossible and so he ignores all the signs of it occurring. In other words, she's commenting that he's got 1940s-era moral blinders on, and so he can't see that Pietro is reading Wanda poetry in a gondola.
I'm pretty sure the ultimate universe isn't another reality, it is another continuity.
Well, we know for a fact it's part of the Marvel multiverse, because travel has occurred between Ultimate U./Zombie U., and then between 616 U./Zombie U.

Okay, I haven't read most of Endangered Species (having an actual job, and having not found a nearby comic store have conspired against it), so I didn't know this until now.
So, my reply is just a massive "are you f'ing kidding me?" Wanda is so powerful that she rewrote the entire Marvel multiverse? That is just insane.
I mean...so what, in all those parallel universes, everyone just has no idea why there are no more mutants (since they don't know about Decimation)? Moreoever, that implies that EVERY universe in the multiverse experienced a version of House of M....ugh...there just isn't a single good implication about that.
A far better explanation for why they couldn't import mutants from other universes would to say that Wanda had created a sort of bubble that deactivated x-genes of any creature passing in or out of our universe...that way, parallel universes wouldn't be a problem.

I thought that she had removed it from all the universes that were off-shoots of the 616 reality. Like, because Age of Apocalypse was created when Legion killed Xavier in 616, it got caught in her reality-fiddling. Same for Days of Future past and the others.

What's your problem? Alex Luthor did it with a power glove.
I mean, come on... this is the freaking definition of "a wizard did it."

:P
I hope he at least gets Spider-Man right
He's probably evil or something.
It was fairly terrible.

Yup.

Different costumes are one thing, but how do you explain away someone changing race?
Bad art.

I mean, I'm sure there are reasons, but yikes, he used to be a "must-buy" writer.

Also, it shit a brick if Hawkeye killed Wanda

Wait, what? This is a joke right? Oh God please let this be a joke.

It's part of the Marvel multiverse, therefore Wanda's spell should've affected it. Incidentally, it's Earth 1610.
