I think I might have been able to stomach the AI in SO3 if I hadn't just come from beating Tales of Symphonia. Same basic battle system, but man, it's like night and day.

Still, for a series called Star Ocean, you would think they wouldn't be afraid of using the damn sci-fi aspect they have. Rogue Galaxy is what the series should have been.

This is hilarious, because I had the same thing... I had just spent around 60 hours of my life enjoying (for the most part) Tales of Symphonia, and then I tried to jump into Star Ocean 3 and I think I lasted about 2.5 hours...

I then gave Symphonia to my friend, who had been extolling the "virtues" of Star Ocean 3 to me (he played it first, since he was more of a die-hard fan of the series than I was), and he said he couldn't stand Symphonia's combat system and gave up. I asked him if he was sure he was holding the controller the right way...

No I feel the same way. After SO2/3's combat systems Symphonia drove me nuts. So limited. I didn't make it too far in Symphonia before I just got annoyed and gave up.

You should play SO2, if you can track a copy down. Your characters' battle-chatter alone made that game worth playing.

I swear to god, if they keep the death-by-mana-drain horseshit in this iteration, Tri-Ace's offices will be ablaze within days of release.

or freezing or any of the plethora of means of death that enemies could bring upon you that you could not do in turn until like 5 hours left in the game

Symphonias battle system was trash. It was SO2's battle system with the ability to actually move around the battlefield by any other means of selecting a target and automoving, removed entirely.

Fuck that noise. I'd rather have a static battle system like FF instead of one that pretended to be free ranging action, and wasn't at all.

Well, maybe it's because you didn't make it very far into the game, but once you start getting accustomed to it and chaining attacks/special attacks/magic into really long combos... I dunno, between the reasonable AI and the intuitive button-mapping/controls, I've always found the Tales games to be the most fun of any RPG with a non-turn-based combat system.

I played Star Ocean for a few hours, and even though I was fighting relatively easy enemies, I just felt like I wasn't actually getting the hang of anything. I felt as unskilled as I had in the first battle of the game.

It sounds like you're saying that you couldn't control your character's movements in Symphonia's battles, and that's just not true...

You could target an enemy and choose an attack and have your character run himself over there to perform it, but that certainly wasn't the only/best way to play it.

I can see the kind of system the Tales games use not being your cup of tea. The main point I was getting at though is that your party members surprisingly aren't as dumb as bricks. I might have had to step in a few times on ball-buster fights, but for the most part I was in no way nervous having the AI handle something like healing.

edit: After reading what you wrote again... you do know there was a manual mode of control, right? That let you move freely and removed the auto move bit.

    From RPGFan:

"The newest installment in tri-Ace's flagship Star Ocean series, Star Ocean 4, has been confirmed to be in development for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. The newest addition to the critically acclaimed franchise is apparently too big for one game, so developer tri-Ace decided to split it up into the following three episodes: Star Ocean 4: First Departure, Star Ocean 4: Second Evolution and Star Ocean 4: Till the End of Time. Series fans should recognize the subtitles as being the same for the first three games of the series (the first and second subtitles being newly added for the PSP remakes).

Star Ocean 4: First Departure will be available in Japan sometime next year."

We already knew it was coming to the PS3, but it's nice to know that the 360 will be getting it as well. And I must say that using the titles of the first three games as a subtitles for the SO4 episodes seems a bit weird. I wonder how much of a connection SO4 will have with the previous games.

    Ok, I'm calling bullshit.

My Game Informer, that I have sitting on my lap right now, says that First Departure and Second Evolution are remakes of the first and second games respectively, and are coming out for the PSP.

Not sure about Till the End of Time though. I'll need to look that up.

SO3's big twist was never really even explained. The little kid who gives it away says that they're not being controlled like characters in a video game, and yet the dictionary says that that kid's character is some sort of ultra-badass space pilot with 105 kills or something. I remember all this from three years ago because of how stupid it all was.

And then how is it resolved? Descartes For Dummies.

I'd like to say the game is a case of wasted potential, but it didn't have much to begin with. I tried playing it again a few months ago and quickly got creeped out by their soulless doll-like anime faces. The only character I could stomach was Roger because he was the only one with some actual personality to his voice and appearance.

So the entire 4D culture consists of decadence revolving around a giant virtual reality TV show, basically.

I take back what I said about no potential - that is a terrifying premise, and shame on Tri-Ace for neglecting to explore it further.

I don't understand why people had difficulty with the AI in SO3. All you did was use them for a bit and they copied your actions. Up the Attack or Defense Points and they did more of one or the other.

Honestly, I never had a problem with the AI being dumb.

SO3 was my introduction to the series and I couldn't for the life me see why people thought it was any sort of good

You should play SO2, if you can track a copy down. Your characters' battle-chatter alone made that game worth playing.

Considering that battle chatter was more entertaining than most of the plot.

I was a huge fan of SO2, although this was before I got into the Tales series. What I loved about it was its combat and character diversity in combat. That was pretty much it. The general plot was pretty much drab (although it shines compared to SO3) but I attribute some of that to its atrocious translation. But the combat was increidble if you didnt build all your characters to be gods, and if you took advantage of the ability to switch characters flawlessly. SO3 just had a plot so horrible that even if you pretended it was more interesting than it was, it didnt keep your interest. And the combat got rid of all the cool things about SO2 and replaced them with MP kills. Nice.

To those who down on the Tales series combat, or at least Symphonia, you need to realize ALL tales games start out slow as fuck. Especially Symphonia, which doesnt get good till you get a full party. The reason for this is the majority of the games awesome combat comes from its combos and skills, so before you have any its boring as hell. Then you start gaining the ability to chain and its like woahmg.

Although one of my fondest memories of RPG gaming was beating that final boss in SO2 without his limiter. Without using certain accessory combinations that made you invincible. I had each character set to a role, the biggest of which was Precis being a complete and utter tank, and Ashton being able to destroy worlds with damage. That and the only sound stradegy to defend against his spellcasting was manually casting the very first fire spell that one chick gets to interrupt him. And being able to do it for 2 hours+.

There was several things I loved about SO2. One was how there were two main characters and depending on your choice you got a slightly different story. Second was the vast cast of characters you could get. Third was how you could split up your party when you entered a town. The amount of side quests in each city was crazy!

in fact the only reason this franchise still exists is because the second was such a shining beacon of excellence

seriously I kind of want to go play it now just to wash the bad taste of even merely thinking about 3 out of my mouth/brain

There was a third Star Ocean game?

    And it sucked?

I, for once, congratulate myself on never owning a PS2.

Also, when are those retards releasing Blue Sphere?

This would be awesome on the Wii.

I guess you are just pulling a joke but boy, am I sick of hearing this. Are you Wii players so starved of certain game genres? This is an actual, honest question since I have no clue about how the Wii lineup looks like.
