I pray the voice actors don't make my ears bleed.(Sophia, Peppita and Nell's associates, I'm looking at you) Star Ocean 3 had to have had the most shrill sounding female cast in an rpg.
I loved that game though, and if the rumors are true, this is another good reason to go get a ps3/360.
What? Peppita's voice was well done, and Nell's was decent.

I like SO3 way better than any of the Tales game, and either of its predecessors. The AI was terrible in a few parts with some particular area of effect attacks which dominated all over the place, but it was mostly workable with proper skill selection, or switching around characters at certain times. Finding skill setups that worked well was an entertaining process. By no means does it excuse the lacking AI customization, but I never found it that horrible.
And the MP death complaints baffle me. You use HP for skills in plenty of games (especially action RPGs), and nobody says anything about it. In addition to this function, in these very same games, HP serves as 'life points,' meaning your characters die when they reach 0. But replace that H with an M, and holy God, that's a terrible mechanic.
The MP kills added diversity to skill selection and combat in general. The only problem was the occasional tendency for it to lead to massive floods of death on your own side, which was a flaw on the HP side, as well.
Item creation? SO2's wasn't all that hot, either. If they properly paced 3's throughout the game and tweaked some other parts of it, I'd be perfectly happy with it.
But the actual fighting of SO3 is far and away more entertaining than the other Star Oceans or the Tales games. The fluidity of the whole thing and the combos you can pull off are great, with any of the characters besides maybe the casters.
---
The intro was entirely the hell too long.
The plot was terrible...though I enjoyed the characters outside of the leading couple.
I should've been able to use Full Active mode right from the start. Holy Jesus they went out of their way to piss me off on that one.
I guess you are just pulling a joke but boy, am I sick of hearing this. Are you Wii players so starved of certain game genres? This is an actual, honest question since I have no clue about how the Wii lineup looks like.
Hmm. Well off the top of my head I can recall, Tales of Symphonia 2, Oboro Muramasa Youtouden, Opoona, Fragile, King Story, FFCC: Crystal Bearers and FFCC: The Boy/Little King. If you're talking RPGs anyway.
I suppose you can include Shiren the Wanderer 3 as well although it's more of a dungeon crawler. Dragon Quest Swords I suppose could be included as well.
It might not just be Wii players but just RPGamers that are starved for some current gen RPGs. It's still very early in the consoles' lifespans though, some more time is needed.

in fact the only reason this franchise still exists is because the second was such a shining beacon of excellence
All right. Will people please stop glorifying Second Story? Please? It's not that good a game. It doesn't hold up very well. I played through it at least twenty times, but it's really not a "beacon of excellence" or anything of the sort. It's glitchy. The translation and editing is horrible. The voices are terrible [and terribly amusing ]. The battle system is unbalanced -- any non-healing mage becomes nigh useless later on, and is more annoying than helpful. The plot is poorly paced, generic, and barely legible sometimes through the translation. And I love it. Twenty or more playthroughs using pretty much every character the game had to offer. I still have them on my old PSX memory cards somewhere, too, with all the difficulties unlocked as well as the music test thing. God, I love Indalecio's battle music.
But really, it's not as good as any of its advocates tend to say. It's one of my favorites, one I've spent hundreds of hours on and I'd recommend it to a lot of people. But really, it's not that incredible of a game. It's not a bad game by any means, but that applies to pretty much the whole Star Ocean series. They're not bad games. They may not be particularly incredible, but they're solid. SO3 is the most polished, well-made of the series however, with the least glitches and bugs, the most balanced combat in the series [not speaking for Blue Sphere, of course], and the in-game dictionary actually explaining a lot of things about the characters, races, and general universe. Of course, it also had many game-breaking glitches and bugs on its initial Japanese release, but those aren't present in the Director's Cut nor the US release. There were also a lot of disappointments for me: the greatly decreased number of recruitable characters, the way Private Actions were handled, the general design aesthetic of the characters. [Did you ever get a good look at Sophia's eyes? Oh my god, even for an anime girl her eyes are GINORMOUS, like a Roswell Gray's.]
Someone's probably going to mention the plot twist and how it ruined the game for them and yadda yadda. :P I never cared. Actually, I can't say that. I WAS happy that SO3 had an actual scifi plot, unlike SO2's which was basically fantasy only the villains were "genetically-engineered cyborg weapons that looked like evil wizards", instead of just "evil wizards of evilness". I really wish the series would've stuck with SO1 and Blue Sphere type stories. Ones that affected the Federation's survival, or the survival of a planet's population. None of this "save the universe!" stuff, let's do something smaller scale in a series for once.
In conclusion, SO2 is not that great. SO3 is not that bad. But SO1 was still rushed. Hopefully, SO4 will buck the whole "not bad" thing for the series. I'm sincerely hoping for ship-to-ship battles, since you apparently get your own starship.
Also, when are those retards releasing Blue Sphere?
Never. Because they're cheapskates. :x Actually, I think it was never released here because the game took up pretty much a whole GBC cart and translation may not have fit. It was the end of the GBC's lifetime, so it was competing with the GBA at that point, so that could've had something to do with it too.
Actually, that's just a Star Ocean staple. :P The intro to 1 is too long, but you actually do some stuff in it so it's not that bad. 2's and 3's are too long, and you do almost nothing in them until the game gets going for real. It's a bit of a problem for the series, though as I recall Valkyrie Profile also suffered from it.
I pray the voice actors don't make my ears bleed.(Sophia, Peppita and Nell's associates, I'm looking at you) Star Ocean 3 had to have had the most shrill sounding female cast in an rpg.

What? Peppita's voice was well done, and Nell's was decent.
I would have switched the "well done" and "decent" around. Peppitas is almost on the level of Collette from Tales of Symphonia. Top honors goes to Farleen, one of Nel's associates.
Nel's was my favorite voice actor but the people she hung around with (Farlene) had an annoying voice actor like I said. (See http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xrQVBvP08p4 (It's the best I could find )))
Anyways if the news is fake supposedly there is one less reason to get a 360 :P
Whoa whoa whoa, hold on just a minute here. There were voices in SO3? Are you sure? Because all I could hear was the goddamn music because they fucked up somewhere and the music volume was about 20x higher than the voices in every single cut-scene the game had to offer, thus making the voices unhearable to anyone without a decent sound system, which I was at the time.

Whoa don't even start on the music Mr. G.
That game had some strange music choices...
Heavy metal in one dungeon followed by gentle arrangements the next. If you give the official soundtrack a listen you will see what I mean. The first disk is epic sci fi themed stuff and the 2nd is all heavy metal cheesy rock music with a mix of jazz. How bizzare...
Reading this thread, I can't believe some people actually believed that news. I mean honestly, Star Ocean 4: First Departure and Star Ocean 4: Second Evolution? Really?
As for the series itself, loved the first two and can't wait for the PSP remake of SO1 and port of SO2. SO3, however, was just a disappointing piece of garbage. The story, voice acting, allied AI, difficulty in the last dungeon and level design was all bloody horrible. If SO4 turns out anywhere near as bad, I'll lose complete faith in Tri-Ace's ability to make good games.
No, they do not compare at all. I haven't played 1 in a while, but you started out with actual fighting pretty quickly, even if it was only with two characters. If we're going with the entire first planet ordeal being the intro, sure, it's long, but you're actually kind've doing things.
2, I don't remember much besides using your sword of light for one battle.
3, you go an hour running around a damn hotel, fight a battle, spend another hour dicking around, fight three or four battles, then spend another hour not doing anything. This is Suikoden V levels of spending time not getting to the heart of the game, except you don't get to any of the game, and it doesn't accomplish anything plot-wise, because you are wandering around a damn hotel.
---
Voice acting-
Of the main characters, the only characters I thought were bad were Fayt and Sophia, the rest range from very acceptable to pretty good, to great. Seriously, Peppita's voice is perfectly fitting, and well done to boot. If ever America has succeeded in capturing the spirit of loli, it was here.
Farlene best goes unmentioned. Don't really remember any of the other non-playable characters. Welch was pretty good, I think.
It's not a bad game by any means, but that applies to pretty much the whole Star Ocean series. They're not bad games. They may not be particularly incredible, but they're solid.
That point still really irks me because of SO1. The breakdown in the end, if the end portion was as good as the portions leading up to it, what could of been. It also didn't help that the last boss was pretty cheese. You basically had one move that could just destroy him without him touching you and anything else is just extra.
Actually, that's just a Star Ocean staple. Was 1's intro long? I don't remember anything about its length being too much. I was pretty immersed though when I first played it. Same with VP, though my love for that game is another story.

2, I don't remember much besides using your sword of light for one battle.
In 2, you start off and either get sent to Expel and kill the thing, or go to the forest and watch Claude kill the thing. Next hour: talking, wandering around town, talking, wandering around town. Then you go to sleep, then if you're Rena you do some more talking before going to the first dungeon. If you're Claude, you head back to the next town, come back and do more talking. Then you do the first dungeon. After the first boss fight, you spend the next half hour talking then do a little wandering before talking a little more. That's SO2's intro in a nutshell. :P I have the thing drilled into my brain I've done it so many times in so many failed playthroughs.
Eh, the thing that makes SO3's intro more irritating than SO2's is that more of it is pointless in comparison. The upside being that you can skip through the cutscenes on future playthroughs. I love that feature sooo much.
Was 1's intro long? I don't remember anything about its length being too much. I was pretty immersed though when I first played it. Same with VP, though my love for that game is another story.
Basically, everything up until right after the Time Gate was the intro. That's what, at least half an hour? Maybe longer. Yeah, it's pretty long. Not quite on par with the other two games, though. Not to mention you actually did some real travelling and stuff, going up to Cold and then to Mt. Metox. It wasn't 95% cutscene.
Even so I still love it like I love Romancing Saga 3 as rushed as it was.
I know what you mean. SO1's probably my favorite out of the series in spite of being the roughest around the edges and such. I hope the remake corrects all that. Especially that part where you can only control Ratix since he has no AI at all. Worst mechanic in the entire series right there.
On SO2 did anyone try fighting the last boss with his "power cap" removed?
I accidentally removed his power cap the first time I played the game. I did a very thorough play through the first time, got to the final boss, and got fucking annihilated. A year later I did a more rushed play through, and kicked the shit out of the boss with my characters at half the levels as the first time. Jump forward to earlier this year, when I finally solved the mystery while rummaging through GameFAQs.
Star Ocean 3 ruined my favorite piece of video game music (Mission to the Deep Space), so it can die in a fire.
SO3 was infinitely more enjoyable if you turned off the voice acting.
Also, the music in the FMV when you booted up the game is simply fantastic, and anybody who says otherwise is a goddamn filthy liar.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NpEN3b9jdbY

Wow, this thread made me want to check out SO2 for the first time in a long time, and I spend all morning looking. I cant find that shit. I am severely pissed, although I did find my N64 Conkers Bad Fur Day. So its not a total loss, but still a let down.
Honestly,i enjoyed SO3,although not as much as SO2. The only things i didnt really like were the nerfed crafting system and the stupid,STUPID plot twist. SO STUPID. It made me soooo angry. Its such a damn cop out.
Honestly alot of people took SO3 hard for the simple reason it wasnt quite up too SO2 gameplay. That and the STUPID FUCKING PLOT TWIST.
Time travel shit in general pisses me off usually because writers have a tendancy to use it as a magic wand to explain massive fucking plot holes, but this was over the top.
But i must admit,i was entertained by the game, morosoe then ff12 and dont regret my purchase.
As long as I won't have to put up with the bullshit "stranded on an underdeveloped world in the middle of the bumfuck galaxy", I'll be getting this for my 360.

10 to 1 you will. That's just what the series does.

I was kind of hoping that the developers had gotten it out of their system by now. Hell, why show all these awesome space battles and technology if I'm going to fart around on a planet where the height of technological advancement is the fucking wheel?

We don't even know if it's coming to the 360 at this point (nor the PS3 for that matter, though it's been heavily rumoured), so you might not have to worry at all. ;-)
But yeah, I wouldn't keep my hopes up if I were you. We got an amazing pre-rendered trailer for Star Ocean 3 too and then 5 minutes into the game we're stuck with a bunch of annoying characters on a shit-stain planet.
Vytae: You liked SO3 more than FFXII? Sorry but... FFXII had its problems but at least the AI, voice acting and writing were really well done. Star Ocean 3 is, well, the complete opposite of that.
That teaser showed floating stairs and platforms at one point. Those were in Star Ocean 3, and I hated that section! I hope those don't make a return. That area was one big floating staircase maze.

Trailer looks good (yay spaceships), until the last bit, where nearly every fucking jrpg cliche takes place. Ancient sky floating ruins, destined boy probably activating some world devastating magic power, and of course, the classic 'hold-own-hands-tightly' female character.
I'd still buy it though, if they fix the battle system. It was what drew me into SO3 in the first place, but after 20 odd hours through I'd given up on the retarded friendly AI, that and I couldn't for the life of me remember what I had to do next, having returned to the game months later in an feeble attempt to finish it. I think I went to an optional dungeon or something, with environments similar in color to the trailer's floaty ruins, and it was horrible. Those magic block shoving puzzles were pure evil.
