[Gift On] The OFFICIAL Virtual Console Secret Santa Thread

**********

Virtual Console Secret Santa Sign Up is now closed.

I am now compiling the final list of participants. Preliminarily, it is looking like everyone who entered will get to participate, regardless of their home country.

Within the next 24 hours all participants will receive an email containing the following information:

Your Santa's Wii Number
Your Santee's Wii Number
Your Santee's Forum Name

Add those Wii numbers ASAP! We can't exchange gifts without first adding these numbers to our Wii consoles!

REMEMBER,
All gifts must be exchanged by December 31st. There is no requirement to spend more than 1000 Wii Points on your Santee, though you certainly can if you feel so inclined.

***********

Welcome to the very first ever Virtual Console Secret Santa Thread. Thanks to the new "Gift" function on the Nintendo Wii's Shop Channel, it is possible to send other Wii owners classic games from consoles of yore. Best of all, it means we can get our Secret Santa on!

The process is easy. In a nutshell... first, everyone who is interested in participating joins up and throws their name into the virtual xmas hat. I then will draw names at random for all participants, matching up Santas with Santees. Gifting ensues.

OFFICIAL RULES OF ENTRY AND PARTICIPATION:

Important stuff!

To join, send an email to vcsecretsantas@gmail.com with your forum name as the subject. In the body of the email, include your Wii Number (found in your Wii's Address Book) and the country you live in. These things are very important, and if you do not send all of the required information then you are not participating. USE AN EMAIL ADDRESS THAT YOU CHECK REGULARLY. I will send you your Santa and Santee information via email, and I will send it to the email address you entered with.

YOU MUST SEND THIS EMAIL OR YOU WON'T GET TO PARTICIPATE

I am not going to accept anyone with a forum join date later than November 1st 2007. This is to prevent abuse of the Virtual Console Secret Santa program. Sorry, but there is always the risk that someone will join up only to receive a gift without any intention of ever giving one.

Maximum Gift Value: 1000 Wii Points. No one is going to hunt you down if you decide to give MORE than 1000 Wii Points worth of Virtual Console games, but there is NO requirement of ANYONE to spend more than 1000 Wii Points. This is to ensure EVERYONE has the budget to participate. If you go nuts and buy your Santee every N64 game on the service, and you only get an NES game from your Santa, tough cookies!

Gifts are Country Locked. For whatever reason, Nintendo has restricted the Gift feature to people who live within the same country. This means your Santa and Santee will be forumers who live in the same country as you. This is why you must send me what country you live in when you email me. Don't sweat it, I will match people up based on country so there are no problems. If only 1 person from a particular country participates, that person may not be able to take part. Sorry, but there isn't much I can do about that.

Deadlines

Deadline to Enter: December 17 at 11:59pm Central Time. I must receive your entry email with correct information BY THIS DATE AND TIME.

December 18: You will receive your Santa and Santee information (Wii Numbers).

December 31: Your Santee must receive his or her gift by this date.

Other Important Stuff

On December 18th I will send everyone their Santa and Santee information. I will send each participant the Forum Name and Wii Number of their Santee, and the Wii Number of their Santa. BOTH Wii Numbers MUST be entered into your Wii Address Book. If you fail to do so, you can not participate!

Don't complain about who you got for a Santee! Further, don't complain about what your Santa got for you!

If you do not want to receive a game that you already own (on Virtual Console or otherwise) then feel free to post what games you already have here in this thread. It will also serve as a nice guide to your Secret Santa as to what kinds of games you like!

This thread IS mod approved. HOWEVER, it is not their problem if you get ripped off by some turd burglar who doesn't send out a gift. Sorry, but thems the terms. This is just one more reason I'm encouraging a spending cap of 1000 Wii Points.

The most important rule: HAVE FUN!

I will be updating this list nightly. If your name doesn't appear within a day of sending your entry email, send it again. Make sure you are sending it to the correct address (vcsecretsantas@gmail.com) and you are including all the required information and that information is correct. If your name isn't on the list, you aren't participating.

The rest of this thread may be used to discuss, post what games you have, etc. Do know that simply posting "I'm in!" doesn't grant you entry.

    I'm really not sure why I'm doing this, another game to play is really the last thing I need. Then again, I do have some extra Wii points and I love Secret Santas oh so much.

    Curious: How do we do this with friend codes? Do we just add everyone that's on the list to your Wii and then use that? Or will you send us the Wii friend code of our Santee and Santa? Can you send a game to someone's Wii if they didn't add you as a friend, but you have them as a friend?

    As the OP says, I'm sending everyone the Wii friend code of their Santee and Santa. That means you will only need to add 2 codes to your Wii, instead of a bajillion.

    You won't be able to send your Santee their gift until they have added your code, but HOPEfully everyone will be real prompt about code adding. I suspect they will be, since there's presents involved :P

    I'd rather not have my Friend code out in the open. I keep it in my profile, so anyone can get it, but I'd prefer to only get requests from people who care enough to look in there for it, as opposed to just adding from a massive list.

    I can hardly wait! Coincidentally, what happens when you gift someone a VC game they already have?

    Aha. I misread then. Is there a way you could put all the friend codes in the OP? I'd like to get a head start on adding people for Brawl. :)

    I do have a few people in my Wii that are in this thread. So hopefully I don't have the person in my system when I add them. Would suck if I added them and it's like: "LULZ YOUR SECRET SANTA IS: NICEGUYEDDIE"

    I'd rather not have my Friend code out in the open. I keep it in my profile, so anyone can get it, but I'd prefer to only get requests from people who care enough to look in there for it, as opposed to just adding from a massive list.

    If I stuck all the Wii codes into the OP, it would be pretty easy to figure out who your Santa is. So I won't be doing that.

    Well, I meant after the new year. But I see your point. :)

    Someone should post the MASTER LIST of VC games so that ppl can be all "umm, don't get me or anyone else for that matter, these games."

    It's in the original VC thread somewhere around here. :)

    1up has a page, Retro Roundup, that has a quick paragraph length review of VC games and a thumbs up or down. I'm not sure how up to date it is, but it'd work as a guide to see what games are good or not.

    Just sent the E-Mail. Awesome idea!

    Here's the games I've got (Either IRL or on the Virtual Console, or I played so much of it when I was a kid that I don't ever want to see it again :P ;-) ):
    -- NES --
    * I pretty much have every one I was ever interested in playing... Dimple Records is great for finding 2 dollar NES cartridges. ;)
    -- SNES --
    * F-Zero
    * SimCity
    * Street Fighter II/SF II Turbo
    * The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
    * Contra III: The Alien Wars
    * Super Mario World
    * Donkey Kong Country
    * Donkey Kong Country 2
    * Super Ghouls n' Ghosts
    * The Legend of the Mystical Ninja
    * Final Fight
    * ActRaiser
    * Super Metroid
    * Breath of Fire II
    -- N64 --
    * (I already played through or own all of them but the Japanese one thanks to friends who were REALLY into the N64 when it was big)

    Now, that list of already owned games being said...

    I've never owned a Genesis, TG16 or NeoGeo, but they always looked like neat systems to me. I only own 2 games on the VC (both NES games), so I don't have any games from these systems... if you were a fan of one of these and think I should try one of their classics out, it'd probably be the best bet. Hit me with your best shot. ;)

    Man, I played that to death when I had my old NES. We tried really hard to get to "The end of the game" and realized after a couple continuous hours of extremely tough gameplay that the game doesn't actually end, it just gets harder.
