Games that must be played - Game Appreciation
I came across a group of gamers (in my writing class) my age the other day that have never heard of the Monkey Island series by Lucas arts. I died a little bit inside. How could these people actually talk about story telling in games without mentioning Lucas Arts? This is a thread dedicated to games that you consider should be played by all gamers, writers, scholars... whoever.
Please post a few games that you believe made a significant impact on the way you view games. Games that where so original, so different or just had such a cool art style you had to tell your friends. You can list your favorites, or ones you enjoy playing with friends. Platforms and genres do not matter. Rather just just a game recommendation thread, this should viewed as more of an appreciation that these games exist. Maybe even list a few reasons why you like that game.
No matter how obscure list some games you think everyone should have played! (Maybe limit to 5 so we really list the top games)
My List:
Monkey Island Series
- Excellent story/writing, clever puzzles, great characters
- I still quote it to this day.
Doom I, II (Fuck 3)
- Very Intense, Great graphics (for its time), Difficulty
Final Fantasy VII (Cliche I know)
- Needs no introduction. I was so excited to get it I almost cried with joy when I bought it.
Myst Series
- Great story, Extremely Original, Has yet to be bested among adventure games.
- Very rewarding when you figure shit out.
Megaman 2
- Best video game music of all time, memorable levels and bosses
Honorable mentions:
Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis
- Because I am biased towards scummvm games

Play Doom 2 online! fun stuff.
I'd add Metal Gear Solid 1, and LoZ:OoT.
Symphony of the Night
Super Metroid
I would focus more on overlooked or obscure titles, like Cave Story or Beyond Good and Evil.
Everyone knows you have to play FFVII, and everyone already played it. Except me, I never made it past disc 1, but... you know...
edit - Portal
Oregon Trail

Same here.
Homeworld 1
Both excellent examples of their genre.

Cave Story and Beyond Good and Evil are obscure? While they are both solid games I do necessarily feel they are overlooked. Why do we need to focus on obscure games anyway?
Freespace 1, Silent Threat, and Freespace 2.
- I would argue that the Freespace games are among the most atmospheric video games around. And they're fucking space sims. That's something.
Beyond Good and Evil
- Great story, excellent main characters, and damned funny. A great game to replay every so often, since it won't take you more than 10 hours to complete.
Psychonauts
- Not much needs to be said.
Homeworld
- Similar to Freespace, the atmosphere here is amazing. And it's also a fun RTS with a great story.
X-Com - Because Chryssalids invented survivor horror. Yes, they did. No, you shut up.

FTW!
We don't NEED to focus on obscure games, but if we just talk about popular titles, chances are most if not all of us have played them. I was just trying to keep this thread from being forum-masturbation.

Breakdown - A super powered, slightly cheesey, military kung fu action movie in the form of a first person game? Very yes! It's a little weird at first and takes some getting used to but its an awesomely great game that more need to play.
I never asked for this!
That happened to me with Zork. Graphics were NOT what I expected. I muddled through anyway.
As far as older games go, Kirby Superstar and Donkey Kong Country 2 are full of platforming goodness, with fun gameplay and design (both are arguably the best games in their series). Chrono Trigger is among the greatest of SNES RPGs for its memorable characters and time-traveling storyline.
Earthbound's probably my favorite game of all time, though it's a bit more niche in its appeal. As an RPG with a semi-realistic setting, it's full of all kinds of entertaining dialogue and wacky situations that really immerse you and get you interested not as much in the main characters as in the world around them and all its strange inhabitants. It's a pretty big "love it or hate it" title, but worth playing, assuming you can ever find it.
There, more explanations. :P
Knights of the Old Republic
Any GTA
Watching my brother play Zelda II is the reason I'm a gamer today - and also the reason I don't really like any of the other Zelda games. The combat was more intricate than in the others. The fights with those evil knights were downright epic. I would get scared when he'd sword the statues because sometimes they turned into a knight. Finding the glove or the candle or the raft was sooooo exciting.
To this day I suck balls at the game, and I've never come close to beating it myself. But watching it is one of my fondest childhood memories. So I'm not sure I can say the game MUST be played, but it was a crucial game for me.
Edit: Are the Monkey Island games fun today if you've never played them (without the nostalgia factor)?
I wish I had liked this more... I also wish I had given it more time before I sold it. maybe I'll get it again when I actually have something to play on.

Yeah especially when everyone just lists games everyone has already played like the Metal Gears or GTAs.
I never asked for this!
Yeah, sadly these threads always devolve into a bunch of posts like Drez's where people just list 50+ games with no other explanation or info. Not really useful.
But I could list more games with no explanation if you guys want.
That being said, a certain fellow told me to tell you that YOU MUST PLAY SEGA SATURN. When I told him that wasn't a game he decided to throw me into a volcano and punch my kid brother in the face. Jackass.
I vividly recall starting it up in my Dreamcast for the first time. The waveforms rippling out to infinity while the controller slowly hummed in my hands; firing multiple beams of light across a juxtaposition of modern and historic art styles; the vastness of it all. I was flying through gigabits of information while the math in the air around my avatar fired neurons of energy that I deflected effortlessly. The architecture of the level built itself up and reacted to my skill level, while the music intensified as I continued deeper and deeper into wireframe pyramids, temples, and mainframes. I fought entire planets that were encircled by rings if dangerous spinning neon blades, or metal plated flying cephalopods that sprung vast networks of mine-laying roots.
Once I had laid waste to a grid of information, I was presented with the tale of time and existence, from the beginning of the universe until the end of time. I became a floating fetus surrounded by a gyroscopic frame, then freed an artificial intelligence from spires of obsidian firewalls. Butterflies greeted me when I accomplished my task, and I flew with great speed towards a digital sunset while the ending credit music plinked softly in the background.
Play Rez.
Pretty much.
If you haven't played and loved BG II, then you don't like RPGs.
BGII was always so overwhelming I could never get anywhere in it. There was way too much to do and too many places to go.
