Next weekend, I'm flying from Oklahoma to Oregon for two weeks of awesomeness. I went around the same time last year but was wondering if there has been any annoying changes at the airport since then. That whole liquid thing sucked balls. I don't want half a can of soda halfway through the flight, I want a damned liter bottle of water.
I'm also taking my 17 year old cousin with me. Will there be any additional hassles since he is underage?
You are allowed to take water onto the plane; you just aren't allowed to carry it past security. You can take an empty bottle through security, then fill it at a drinking fountain or one of the restaurants at the airport.
It's so much easier to get through when you've packed appropriately (putting all the troublesome stuff in checked baggage and your valuables in carry-on). Coming back my checked bag was intricately packed and stuffed to the limit. They decided to open it for inspection, but obviously balked at the thought of trying to fit everything back in so they just stuck their little paper inside and zipped it back up.
Remember to dress for the trip, or rather the security too. You'll have to remove your shoes, jacket, and any sort of over-shirt, sweaters, etc. Be aware of metal and your personal electronics as you're leaving the house. Put whatever you can in your jacket pockets so you don't forget to take it out of your pockets later. If you have change, dump it in a ziplock bag that you can either keep in your pocket for easy removal or put in your bag. Don't forget to take off your belt when you go through the metal detector. Planning ahead and dressing for it can help you avoid forgetting things in your pockets and make it quick and easy to strip down to get through security fast.
You absolutely do not want to set off the metal detector. Last time I did, I was told I only had one more chance to walk through unscathed so I'd better be sure I had all metal off my person.
Don't forget to keep your ticket and ID with you at all times, even when going through security. Guy in front of me left his in his jacket that he sent through the xray machine and wasn't allowed through the metal detector till security found it for him.

I'm not going to have any problems taking the minor though, am I?
He just needs an ID.
Take pictures.
