My taskbar is GONE.

So I turned on my computer this morning, and my taskbar was gone. Usually it's at the bottom of the screen hidden, and when I roll my mouse over the bottom edge of the screen, it pops up.

Not today. So I restarted my computer and it still won't come up. Does anyone have any idea how to fix this?

Have you tried messing with the task bar options? Try changing it to always be there and then changing it back to the way you want it.

I wanted to do that, but the only way I can change those options is if I right click on the taskbar, which I can't do because it's not there.

I manually shut down my computer last night. That could have something to do with it, but I thought that by reseting it that would ahve fixed any problems caused by the illegal shutdown. Maybe not?

I'd kill explorer.exe, then, from the Ctrl-alt-del menu, go to File > New Task(Run...) and type in "explorer" just to see if that'll do it. And roll ove all the sides of your screen in case it shifted.

does pressing the windows key down there between ctrl and alt on your keyboard do anything? is explorer.exe running?

EDIT: looks like someone else suggested checking on explorer before i was able to finish up my post.

    Okay, some wierd stuff.

-If I press the windows key, the menu comes up as if I had just clicked the start button, but no taskbar comes up.

-If I kill explorer.exe and then go to new task, run explorer again, the startbar comes up for a second, but my mouse is an hourglass so I can't click on it, and then once my mouse stops being an hourglass, the taskbar goes back down and I can't get it back up.

You somehow managed to resize your taskbar all the way to the bottom of the screen. Drag the arrow all the way down to the bottom of the screen until it turns into the double-ended resizing arrow, then click and drag your taskbar back up to the proper size.

Yes, because when I did the restart explorer.exe thing, the taskbar was at the bottom.

Nope. My taskbar has always been set to autohide, so when the mouse isn't over it, it isnt there. When I restart explorer.exe, it comes back and then I see it go back down as if it's hiding again, but it won't come back up.

I'm going to try shutting down the computer, leaving it off for a few minutes, and then booting it back up. We'll see what happens.

Thanks for all the help guys.

Have you tried a virus / spyware scan yet?

Try booting into safemode. If taskbar shows up, change it to default settings (not autohidden, regular size, etc). Reboot, taskbar should (hopefully) be back.

Sounds like the monitor got readjusted somehow to stretch the image so the taskbar is there but off the bottom of the screen. This could happen on a CRT or LCD but it's more likely on a CRT. Play with the front panel controls on your monitor?

I had a virus/spyware/something that did literally exactly what you are describing. I couldn't get it off via scanners and had to reformat, but that was a year or so ago, maybe you'll be able to get rid of it now. Good luck :/

About the spyware/virus scanning - Thats a good idea. I doubt its a virus though because last night around midnight when I turned the computer off it was totally fine, and then this morning when I turned it on this started. I really feel like it has something to do with the fact that I manually shut it down, because I never do that, and now that I have, this happened. It would be a big coincidence.

Frylock - I don't think the monitor got readjusted because when I maximize a window (like firefox), the bottom of the window is still right at the bottom of the screen. Also, when I try and move my mouse as far down as it will go, it never goes 100% offscreen, I can always see the tip.

This is really odd, I've never had this type of problem on this computer before, and any problems I have had like this, I've solved by just restarting.

A voodoo solution from the Interwebs (since this involves registry editing the Interwebs take no responsibility if you hose your computer):
If you suddenly find that your taskbar is missing from Win9x (or NT) ...

    Launch Regedit.
    Back up your Registry.
    Drill down to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ Software\ Microsoft\ Windows\ CurrentVersion\ Explorer\ StuckRects and delete it.
    Reboot.

Doesn't matter. It can happen anytime... Even if you're in bed, sleeping... Or out to eat... Viruses can attack anytime of the day. :)

About the re-sizing of the taskbar...you can do that even if the taskbar is set to autohide. I've done it a few times without realizing it, and because the taskbar is set to auto-hide it has sometimes taken it a while to do it.

This would explain why the start menu opens up when pressing the windows key, but disappears once you click off of it.

Just don't rule this out. It could have moved to any of the sides and then re-sized somehow, so bring your mouse to the far extremes of the all four sides to see if the double re-size arrow pops up.

Yeah, when I said the symptoms were exactly the same I meant it. When this happened to me it also took a restart after a lan party where I assume I picked it up.

Fuck, alright, it's still happening. I don't know what to do. I guess if I did get a virus it's not that bad because I could just back up all my stuff. This is just a really wierd thing for a virus to do: just hide my taskbar?

Tomorow afternoon when I have sone time I'll try and figure this out. Thanks a lot for all the advice guys. I'll post again tomorow.

You can try turning off auto-hide by going to the control panel and then to "Taskbar and Start Menu". You should be able to get to the control panel either by using the windows key, or by doing a ctrl-alt-delete, new task..., and putting "control" in the run box.

    good luck

It still sounds like you managed to minimize the taskbar. I have mine set to autohide too, and a couple of times, somehow it's been dragged all the way down. I can't provide any explanation how, it's just happened, and all the stuff you've described (like the start menu) are exactly what it's like when that happens.

I can't believe I remembered this, but use this tool to restore your taskbar. There was a forum post back in the old days that I made that suggested this tool, and it worked for that OP. Since it was on the old Forums, I can't link that original post, but I know this did the trick for that person.

Edit: You can also just run the first VBScript linked on that page. I took a look at it and it just deletes and recreates some regkeys, nothing harmful.

Try hitting the windows key, then right clicking and going to properties, turn off lock and auto hide and see what you can do.
