Getting BT to work (for legal purpouses)

So I've been trying to grab some stuff (completely legal, I don't intend to break forum rules here) that is in a BT file. Unfortunately I haven't been able to get BT to work on my PC for about 3 years (I had it...so long ago) I am currently using the Azureus program and can't get above a yellow smiley face.

The program itself suggests that this is a NAT problem and suggests that I check for firewalls (I DO have AVG anti-virus but I don't think that has a firewall. Also Windows FW is off) or Port Forwarding ( took for ever but I did it) but I still have no avail. So after exhausting all options I can think of I turn here. If anyone has experienced similar problems or has any idea where I can find good answers (they have a wiki but its very techinal) please let me know. Thanks in advance.

If you have NAT problems then it's just as likely to be a setting on your router as it is to be a firewall in place. Look up the user manual for your router and see if you can fiddle with the settings.

Yellow smiley face means overall probability of successful download, ie. how many seeds and peers there are. It has nothing to do with your configuration.

Drop Azureus and pick up uTorrent. Azureus is terrible.

Unless you need plugins like SafePeer and AutoSpeed.

You can offload SafePeer to a separate app like PeerGuardian. Autospeed is kind of cool, but you can just set reasonable static limits and get nearly the same benefit. Anything you can do to avoid Azureus is worth it, I stuck with it for a long time, until I simply couldn't put up with the random crashes and insane memory usage anymore. There isn't a plugin on earth that could ever draw me back.
