Find out what features are included in PS3 system software update 2.10.

An update to the PS3 system software was released on December 18, 2007. If you update your PS3 system, the system software version will be 2.10 and the following features will be updated. In order to download PS3 system software version 2.10, you will need a minimum 120Mb of free space on either the PS3 Hard Disk Drive (System Update) or on removable storage media (PC Update).

The PLAYSTATION 3 system software version 2.10 update includes the following:

* Voice Changer

The Voice Changer feature has been added to voice / video chat. Visit the Voice Changer guide in Help & Support under PS3 at eu.playstation.com for more details.

Using this feature, you can change the tone of a voice that is input from an audio device such as a microphone. High and low-pitched tones can each be adjusted to five preset levels. You can vary the tone when using voice / video chat under Friends.

Other new or revised features in version 2.10

Music

* You can now select [Type 3] as an option under Settings > [Music Settings] > [Bitmapping]. This bitmapping process was developed specifically for the PS3TM system to enhance audio playback.

Video

* DivX and VC-1 (WMV) have been added to the types of files that can be played. *
* Blu-ray Disc Profile 1.1 is now supported. **
* [BD Data Utility] has been added. ***

*
- To play VC-1 (WMV) format files, you must go to Settings > [System Settings] and set [Enable WMA Playback].
- Copyright-protected files or files that were encoded by using DivX 3.11 cannot be played. - Files that are 2GB or more cannot be played.
** You may now be able to use several additional features such as playback of two videos at the same time with Profile 1.1-compatible Blu-ray Discs. The available features vary depending on the disc.
*** The management data that is used by the Blu-ray Disc is saved.

Note:

* This system software update includes all features contained in previous versions.
* The new system software will preserve any settings previously made to the PLAYSTATION 3. Depending on the software title, you may not be able to play without first updating the PS3 system software.
* Do not perform updates using any data other than the official update data provided by Sony Computer Entertainment over a network or on disc media, and do not perform updates by methods other than those described in the product documentation or in this site. If an update is performed using data from another source, by another method, or with a PS3 system that has been altered or modified in any way, the PS3 system may not operate properly and may not be able to install the official update data. Any of these actions may void the PS3 system warranty and affect your ability to obtain warranty services and repair services from Sony Computer Entertainment.

http://uk.playstation.com/help-support/ps3/guides/detail/item89434/Update-features-(ver-2-10)/

I saw this on Neogaf and the original link isn't working anymore but I think it's safe to say this is correct as this as up on the official UK PS site. Not sure why they took it down, possibly it's been delayed?

DivX support will be nice. I wonder if they just mean MPEG-4 ASP, which would mean XViD also, or specifically just DivX?

Remember, Xbox Live has had this forever. It's just one more check in the box to duplicate the functionality of their closest competitor.

That being said, the only thing worse than having to listen to a Internet nitwit cuss you out, is listening to a Internet nitwit cuss you out IN A ROBOT VOICE.

Hmmn, yeah, "voice changer" - awesome, lemmie get my wallet!

    1) As far as I'm aware, you can't copy divx files to your 360 HDD, just stream them.
    2) 360 plays Blu-Rays?

Anyway, neat update but I wish they'd include some more stuff in each one (a decent backwards compatibility update would be a start).

I really don't care about copying as long as they're copying good things. Otherwise everyone would be screaming Simpsons did it first!

On sort of a related note, what kind of software do you guys use to stream media from your PCs to the PS3? I've tried Nero and WMP11, but they didn't really work out that great... I'm hoping with this new update to get the streaming working but I'm looking for some suggestions on what programs to use.

I don't know about the ps3, but streaming to my 360 with orb greatly reduces the quality of the video. It's all pixelated n shit. Videos play at their original quality when I put em on a usb key and plug that directly in my 360.

Was it really necessary for you 360 enthusiasts to come into this thread just to do your "LOLSONY" thing? We get that you don't like the PS3, don't shit on threads for no real reason.

This is great, downloading now, I can't wait to try it out. I've been using Nero8 to stream to my PS3. Now I shouldn't need to transcode anymore.

I just tried another file that I think used XVID and the video came through but not sound. But It's possible that it was just a bad download or it wasn't using XVID or it was an odd encode.

I'm downloading a few others to see if they have the same problem.

Hmm... my UPnP server still just says "unsupported data" for all .avi and .mkv files, only .mp4 and .mpg show up. Does the DivX have to be local or on a USB HD? Is there any way to stream this stuff to the PS3? I'm using Twonkymedia on a NAS atm.

I'm using red kawa to download to the PS3 harddrive. I tried streaming using Winamp Remote, but I got network errors. So it's possible that streaming doesn't work or maybe winamp remote sucks. Who knows.

I've been testing out my various anime divx videos and so far a lot of my older videos are working fine. But many of my newer videos, particularly ones that are using the latest encodes, have trouble working.

I tested out the new FFXIII and FFvXIII trailers and they worked beautifully. Yay! No more encoding!

Sony also released the new PSP update today. It doesn't do much but it does include the new Internet Radio, which is apparently a cool feature for some. Personally, I really wish they'd make the PSP's XMB as featured as the PS3's one (especially integrating the PSN into it), though I guess the PSP just doesn't have the memory to be able to handle some of the features.

A couple of other things I noticed that've been added are a 'planet' visualiser and now when you use the Internet Browser, your wallpaper will show up in the background. The latter is kinda meh but the new visualiser is pretty damn cool.

I do like the moving wave thing in the background; I like how they now allow me to change the color of it, vs. the color for the season/month. What I'd like to see implemented now is to be able to change the color of that wave thing while playing music. Not liking the purple.

Seems like for the most part, Sony is trying to listen to their customers. Custom backgrounds, themes, custom playlist, arranging game Icons, etc. Most of which should of been included in the first build :) But sometimes it takes feedback/bitchfest to get everything up and running. Now all I really need is to be able to access my XBM while in-game and I'll be a pretty happy camper.

With today's PS3 firmware 2.10 update and PSP firmware 3.80 update, Sony has secretly updated the Remote Play functionality to allow playing of all PSone downloadable games AS WELL AS PS1 ORIGINAL DISCS! Straight to the source on the Playstation Forums. This is really interesting tech news!

    That's ... well, that's pretty awesome. Makes me kind of wish I had a PS3 now. :(

Hrm OK this is (mostly) off-topic but maybe somebody here can help without me starting a new thread for it. When I connect to my WMP11 media server with the PS3 it only shows the 3 sample vids (Bear, Butterfly, and Lake). In WMP11 I've added 2 other folders with hundreds of divx/xvid movies, and they show up fine in the Library view of WMP (locally) but never on the PS3. They are set to be shared and have been scanned into the Library.

So I guess this is most likely a WMP question, but do I need to do something special to get them recognized and streaming to the PS3? They're folders on a network drive, and I've tried rebooting both the WMP PC and the PS3 to make sure it wasn't cached somehow or something, but no bones.
