I need one to go with my new Macbook, but I'm a bit lost and haven't been able to come to any decisions after searching various online retailers. I think it's just hard for me to judge a printer without seeing it working in person. I suppose I could just go to a brick and mortar store and check things out instead, but I'd like to be somewhat informed before doing so to make sure I don't pay too much and walk away with something I'll regret purchasing.
As for what I want, I'm looking for something compact. I move from place to place fairly frequently, and I want something that can be carried around in a suitcase without taking up a whole lot of space. The printer itself would primarily be for printing essays, not photos. I'm not looking to spend too much either, but I'll pay extra for reliability.
And crap, this was meant for the Technology forum. Could someone move it please?
Canon IP3500 inkjet - http://review.zdnet.com/inkjet-printers/canon-pixma-ip3500/4505-3156_16-32593912.html. Good all around inkjet. Documents come out quickly, cartridges are fairly efficient. Will do a photo in a pinch, but thats not your concern. Edit : If for some reason you think photos are worth another $60 go for the ip4500, its much better at photos. Don't go to the ip6700d, which is a pure photo printer.
Brother HL-2040 Monochrome laser - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16828113160. Boring as hell black and white laser printer. But it should make it through your entire college career, possibly on the initial toner cartridge. And it'll print essays and any text documents extremely well. I'd still advise dropping $50 on a extra cartridge right away, don't want to see the 'change toner NOW' message the day before your you go to class to turn in your big essay exam.
If you can live without color, go for the Brother monochrome. Lasers have a huge advantage in terms of cost per page and reliability, they get rather expensive and fairly large if you need to go color though. You'll need to buy a USB A-B cable if you don't have a spare one, no printers come with them.
Edit : Oh, go to your local brick and mortar shop to pick them up. You won't see any real cost difference between the two, so support your local guys. Also, if theres anything wrong out of the box (happens more than you think) its a very quick and easy swap. If theres a Microcenter nearby, well I'd advise you to go there.
