I think there is a time and a place for screwing around. I don't have anything against unusual strats like single-class teams, as long as you're actually trying to win, but don't bitch if some of your teammates don't feel like doing it. And definitely don't whine when the other team plays against you seriously, ffs. It's retarded when one team decides to go all-melee or something and then they start complaining about how lame the other team is for shooting them.
Also, when the rest of the team wants to play seriously don't waste a slot screwing around please. It really sucks to be trying to win and have a teammate crawling around as a Heavy with fists out. There's a reason that was in one of the griefing videos. You're just bringing everybody else on your team down.
That time and place is all the time since its a video game
Now you make me imagine Zek as the dad who has to tell his kids to stop hitting the cat with the Monopoly boxed set because that's not how you play the game

No, no its not. That is stupid. You should feel bad for saying that. Just because it is a game doesn't mean that ALL the time is screw around time. The game is meant to played as a team to work towards an objective. Some people actually like trying to seriously win a map. I know it sounds crazy but its true and when those people are the majority on the server please respect them and try and play seriously (you can still have fun just don't do really stupid stuff).

i think my favorite point that was brought up was that on most any other public servers, if your nonstop piping music and there's an admin on, you'll get your ass banned really fast.
most people don't appreciate that shit. back when i played the specialists a ton, people used that shit to essentially grief servers that didn't have admins.
so why does that make it okay to do on the PA servers?

There's usually a threshold, where everyone knows it's appropriate to start the shenanigans.
It's usually around the 3rd time the same team loses/20th minute the same map has been going/agreed on by the whole team/server.
What it is not is, right when you log on to the server(unless previous conditions were met before you logged in and are obvious).
I mean, we do awesome things when adhering to that first set, like a melee arena on top of quarry on the custom server, or going all spy, costuming up as the other team, and then cloaking on to the point in gravelpit B.
What happens with the other option is some dicks going "offensive medic hurrr hurr durrrf" or building defensive sentry gun farms at the blue spawn on gravelpit.
So that was YOU. Playing defense on Gravelpit when you get, of all things in the world, a SPY RUSH, is hilarious for all parties concerned. I didn't know what the hell was going on for 5 minutes.
I think both parties could give a little as far as the current drama is concerned. Play a wacky round if everybody seems open to it, then cowboy up and play one or two serious rounds. Dumb & Dumber might be a funny movie, but not repeatedly for a 24 hour period.
On another note, I tend to broadcast my groans of displeasure or warcries over voice chat (I'm used to ventrilo with my friends) so if anyone wants me to shut up, just say so.
If somebody wants to play an engineer but only wants to use the wrench why would that be a problem
As long as they throw a teleporter or dispenser up, I'm fine with that. But all classes are not created equal. If a medic decided they were just going to try and bone saw people and not heal, that would be crossing the line. But if a medic just wanted to bone saw people and heal people when they needed it, that is fine. I think if people just use common sense when it comes to stuff like this we shouldn't have a problem.

Because each class has a primary roll. A medic's roll is to heal and build up and uber. If the medic is not doing one of those things he is not contributing to the team in the way he/she should be and is just taking up a slot on the server that someone else would be happy to take and play properly.

If you bonesaw the whole round without helping the people that its now your job to help, then you're taking up space that could be put to better use.

Seriously, shut the fuck up.
Yes, playing videogames is by definition (unless you're a paid professional in Korea or something) "screwing around." But there's a difference between screwing around (in relation to the world) by still playing the game as intended, and just screwing around while playing.
No, I'm not earning money or contributing to the world by dominating people as a heavy in an epic match of Dustbowl. But I'm not even contributing to my team by playing as a melee only demoman or sniper or running around not healing anybody as a medic.
Some of us are actually able to have fun in TF2 just by playing a class in its most effective manner along with our team and trying to win. I would suggest that if you can't, then perhaps you should go buy a new game and/or stick to servers dedicated to dickery.
Not that I've experienced whatever dickery you're accused of...last time I remembered playing with you was a while back, I believe, and you were just shooting people in the face as God intended. If most of this ruckus is about a controversial spray or a little music piping (in moderation), then I say fuck 'em. I'm just assuming it's the same kind of shenanigans I've seen from a few others around here.
So the whole piping music debate aside, last night was pretty hilarious. Blowing everyone on the server up except for Zek, 100K health train stop attempts, and the use Job as a pinata while he tries to punch you were all epic moments.
I'm still waiting to see if my stats get updated with the ridiculous figures from last night.
I think everyone realized pretty quickly that my server was not set to serious mode last night.
Yeah, I fucked around for a few then bailed. But it was absolutely obvious that no "real" playing was going on in there, or likely to anytime soon, so it's no big deal. And while I believe it was you (maybe it was Jon) that yelled at us before on this one, it's your server. If you're having fun, go for it...and apparently everybody else was, too, because the server stayed pretty much full. It's all good.
I think part of the problem though is that there are at least some people (including me) who don't get to play this game every night, because they don't have time, so when they do get on they're not looking for 12v12 sniper hilarity or melee medics or whatever craziness people can come up with. They're not at all bored with the game. They're just looking to, you know, play some TF2. They don't go to PA servers for hilarity, either, they go to them because they generally attract less fucktards and a majority of people are a little better and work together more than in most pubs.
Why, what line is there to cross? I mean, if he just wants to bonesaw, why the hell is that much of an issue to you?
I thought you were just trolling - and you may be - but I'll bite.
For the bulk of the playing populace, it's fun to play on an effective team and at least have a good battle even if you don't win. In order for that to happen, each player needs to be effective as an individual and pull their weight. Some people are newer and that's ok, but to deliberately fucker around reduces the fun level for everyone present who is trying to play a 'serious' game.
Go play something single player.
But, the person is having fun, so why does it matter
Some people enjoy a game more when there is cohesive team play, the game was designed for it and works best that way. Its not a difficult concept to understand where these guys are coming from even if they are being a bit overzealous about it at times.
I know this will just be dragging the debate down with insults, so I'm apologizing in advance and spoiler'ing it...
TheFarSide probably masturbates to Punk'd at least twice a day. It's that sort of retarded "humor" (and I use the term extremely loosely) that fuckwads like him and those defending him are attracted to. The game isn't serious business, but for fuck's sake have some respect for those that want to play it. If you want to dick around, do it elsewhere. If you want to play TF2, you're welcome to join us.

Because it's a fucking team game. If we're on a basketball court and you're having fun by throwing the ball out of bounds at onlookers while we play, I'm going to call you an asshole...I don't care how much fun you're having. Go find a court dedicated to dipshits.
Also because there are limited slots. Only 24 people get to play on either server at any time, and if there aren't enough to fill the second server only 24 people get to play in a "full" game (which many consider more fun). At the very least if you're going to play fuckaround games do it on the server with 10 or 12 people, not the full one.
Why, what line is there to cross? I mean, if he just wants to bonesaw, why the hell is that much of an issue to you?

If a group of guys are playing basketball and one guy decides to take the basketball and just stand there and dribble and not move, but he's having fun, why does that matter?
And if the rest of his team decides to run around in circles in front of him, why does that matter?
Because sometimes the shit one person considers "fun" makes the game unfun for other people.
Of course, I know that you understand this and you just enjoy being a raging boner, because that makes it even more fun for you, but I figured I'd point out your nonsensical rambling anyway.

I think the issue lies in that you are a part of a team, and should consider both everyone's enjoyment along with your own personal fun. If you are clearly on a team that is playing more seriously, you're kind of being a drain for staying on the server to screw around when you are the only one enjoying it. There are plenty of servers you could find where your behavior would be welcome...it sounds like a lot of people want to play more normally.
-It's a "team" game, so if one person is being a dipshit it affects others
-There are limited slots on the server(s)
-The Far Side is a raging fucktard
So I just played on a server with an admin who was being kind of a dick... building sentries up in the air, blinding people etc. He then decided that he would make himself a heavy and changed his health to 50000 (so he could punch everyone and not die).
Long story short my spy damage (and overall) record is now 29121 and I'm banned from that server.
So, guys, please don't bite my head off or anything...
Just got the Orange Box a week ago, beat Portal last night (whoot!), and am really getting back into PC gaming since creating a Steam account. I mainly only play single-player games. Okay, I ONLY ever play single-player games. But, this looks like tons of fun, and I done paid for it and everything, so I'm thinking of making the plunge. Problem is, I'm pretty sure I'm not gonna be 'great' at this game. Like, I won't go all fucktard and kill all my own teammates or anything, but I won't know the goals, what's expected of my class, the shorthand speak, or anything like that.
Is there a 'never played it and am sure to suck' server I should join in on, or anything in particular I should do to make sure I don't ruin a clan-wars type game or something for some team. 'Cause, man, I don't know if I could live with a bunch of strangers on the Internets being angry at me for sucking...
Or, do y'all not care if you've got a weak link in the mix?
Welcome, and don't worry, most of us sucked hard at the start, but the learning curve isn't too bad. I'd suggest starting as a medic and following the players around since this gives you time to watch how your teammates play. Check the scoreboard a round or two in and it will be apparent who to watch more closely. Then once you think you've got the idea of how other people are playing a class that interests you, give it a try. Right now the only thing I suck at is spy, because it's just not the playstyle I enjoy.
-TFS likes attention and is getting lots because of this.
Yup. What some of you need to realize is, TFS doesn't give a fuck whether or not you have fun, or whether anyone else has fun, so long as he's having fun and getting attention. Somehow he's built a little cult following that confuses attitude this for a "sense of humor", which just feeds his addiction.
No amount of "it's a team game, think of others" will ever, ever get him to act any differently. Accept that, and your time around him (or, better, away from him) will be much more pleasant.

It's not complicated TFS. Some people have fun by playing the game "for real" and trying to win with their team. When you're just fucking around in the middle of a real game, you're actively impeding their fun. Maybe you don't find it as fun as they do, but don't be a douchebag.
I have an enormous issue with the idea that it is a medic's "job" to heal people. If a medic wants to bonesaw or needlegun or what the fuck ever, why the hell not. It isn't his job to do shit. The only time you have any right to ever get mad at a medic for exclusively bonesawing is if the server for some godforsaken reason has a limited amount of medic slots.

If you're not going to heal people like the class is clearly supposed to, you should at least tell the team that so somebody else can go Medic in your place. There isn't a limit, but people will often self-impose one by not going Medic when there are already a couple on the team, because they assume you'll be doing something useful.
Even so, a Medic that doesn't heal is worthless. It beats a punching Heavy, but not by much. It's one thing if you decide that joining in the fight is better for a situation than continuing to heal(which is rarely the case), but actually deciding to play a Medic and never heal is the equivalent of just fucking around.
