So I just played on a server with an admin who was being kind of a dick... building sentries up in the air, blinding people etc. He then decided that he would make himself a heavy and changed his health to 50000 (so he could punch everyone and not die).
Long story short my spy damage (and overall) record is now 29121 and I'm banned from that server.
Wait, this wasn't me last night was it? As it was stated earlier in the thread, I'd find it hard to believe that you couldn't figure out that we were in goofing off mode on the server. Also, I don't remember banning anyone.
Job, Jonxp, and their various admins need to man up and just start banning people.
I have and will continue to ban people. Possibly with TFS I just haven't been on while the infractions have been going on. I did however just check the server logs today and there have been times that admins have been on while this crap has been happening and they did nothing about it. So that has been dealt with.
Needless to say there are some hilarious chat logs showcasing the reasons why TFS will be banned as soon as I get home and I will relish every keystroke while doing it. Some gems include:
"how to mute?! its never been necessary before"
"Yeah, I didn't think it was possible for rap to sound worse than it usually does, but the TF2 voice codec does it easily."
"hi mute, thank you for existing"
"Damnit, not the ABBA again"
"mostly I want to be able to talk to my team"
"such a dick... won't stop music when several people ask... "
"farside's doing the roomba teleport thing again : /"
Now I don't rummage through server logs for fun typically. I'd rather be playing the game, but I will if someone has a problem and I need to check it out.
And to reiterate what JonXP posted. We need to know when people break the rules
I need to point out that today is the first day I have actually gotten a PM requesting a ban. My MotD specifically says to PM me if there are any issues. Things don't have to escalate to this degree just contact an admin if there is something of this nature and it will be dealt with.
even though they are Nepali in origin they have become hugely popular worldwide recently, the forward cant is nice, I can really only describe it as making the machete "want" to swing.
But if your idea of fun comes at the cost of the enjoyment of others (read: your team) then why even play a team game? If your idea of fun is not to help your team but just to dick around for your own personal enjoyment, why play a team game? Why not pick up another FPS and play death match.
Does seeing another player melee really cost you pleasure? Can you not enjoy yourself knowing that somewhere out there a medic is killing people at close range?
If I say that having a player on my team who is deliberately trying not to help us win and rather intentionally just fucking off, and keeping another player who would do neither of these from joining the server in their place, does cost me pleasure then do I win the argument?
Because in a team-based game I don't see how this is an entirely unreasonable assertion.
You're generalizing. When I solely melee, I'm not doing it to fuck around or to anger my teammates, but because I feel like meleeing. This is not entirely unreasonable, I believe.

So, guys, please don't bite my head off or anything...
Just got the Orange Box a week ago, beat Portal last night (whoot!), and am really getting back into PC gaming since creating a Steam account. I mainly only play single-player games. Okay, I ONLY ever play single-player games. But, this looks like tons of fun, and I done paid for it and everything, so I'm thinking of making the plunge. Problem is, I'm pretty sure I'm not gonna be 'great' at this game. Like, I won't go all fucktard and kill all my own teammates or anything, but I won't know the goals, what's expected of my class, the shorthand speak, or anything like that.
Is there a 'never played it and am sure to suck' server I should join in on, or anything in particular I should do to make sure I don't ruin a clan-wars type game or something for some team. 'Cause, man, I don't know if I could live with a bunch of strangers on the Internets being angry at me for sucking...
Or, do y'all not care if you've got a weak link in the mix?
When I was completely new to this game, I hopped on to a PA server which has 3 people on it. Those guys spent to next few hours teaching me the basics and if I could remember who they were then I'd thank them in this thread. The guys here on the PA server are really nice, and it doesn't matter how much you suck because people will give you pointers rather then tell you to fuck off.
Shank, you know I respect you, so you know I wouldn't say anything in a knee-jerk reaction, but I think you're misinterpreting the argument.
We're not saying medics are or should be heal-slaves, nor are we entitled to their protection on-demand. Likewise, nobody is going to be condemning battle medics.
However, saying it's a 'preconceived notion' that medics should be healing seems pretty ludicrous in a game, with a class called 'medic', with a primary weapon that heals. It's not a preconceived notion, it's an element of the game that is so fundamentally based on unequivocal essentials that it's foolish to contradict the expectance of a medic to be doing some healing as 'idiotic', as it's quite the opposite - it's a logical conclusion.
Additionally, the reason so many people are getting uptight about the current topic is because of the nature in which it was being done, rather than the activity itself, which, like I said, nobody reasonable - and certainly no Penny Arcadians that I respect - is going to stop you doing.

This is the last post I'm making on this because you are not reading what I'm posting. I never said medics shouldn't and can't melee. I'm saying that they should have the decency to at least help out with healing people when they play medic. And doing something just because its what you enjoy is a piss poor reason for doing something esp when it can effect other people, by that logic one should be able to go into a server and use all the exploits and scream racial slurs over voice comm because "that's what they enjoy." And by other people I'm talking about your team (who in this hypothetical scenario the medic is refusing to heal and the people waiting to get in the server in which this medic is taking up a slot while not healing)
p.s. No, You!

Granted, it's really quite rough playing on the PA servers. The players are competent and will not hesitate to bring you to your knees at a 0-12 (yesterday). It's discouraging, but I've got a feeling I'm getting better. I'm consistently getting about a 1:2 kill/death ratio now.

This seems reasonable to me, it just bugs me that a lot of players around here have a sense of entitlement regarding being healed. No medic ever is entitled to heal you - it's somewhere between a favor and his job, and his job isn't to heal you.

Prob a dumb question but I am new to TF2...and Steam in general... The first page says that in order to join the PA Steam community, go into their chat and request. However the Steam chat appears to be private to members only. Am I missing something obvious? I'd like to play with some PA-ers as quality seems to vary widely on the pub servers I've played on.

I think we need more detail on the OP about joining the PA group. Hell I play 4-5 times a week and I haven't even bothered to figure out what arcane system of invitation Steam uses.

Be gracious when a medic heals you, be quiet when he doesn't.
My job when I play is to help my team win. The first way I do this is to determine what class our team needs most. Usually this is medic, since I'm often the only tool willing to go medic, I do. Then, when I'm medic, I will heal whoever needs it most, and whoever will take advantage of my healing to help the team win. I will not 'latch on' to one person and heal him only when there's 5 half-dead people right behind me, like so many medics seem to do. it drives me crazy to see other medics do that... but it's not always their fault - you have to get good at healing one person before you can get good at healing a whole team.
anyway, where was I going with this? it is unreasonable to get mad about not being healed when the medic already has his hands full healing near-dead people... it's not unreasonable to expect heals in general though - and it IS reasonable to get pissed if a medic won't heal you when you're standing right there and the guy he's healing is maxed out on health already, or if he's shooting his needlegun or bonesaw instead of healing when half your team is right there and all wounded. if you want to fight rather than heal, switch to a combat class... I could go out on a limb and say the medic is the very worst combat class, and the needlegun and bonesaw should be last ditch weapons, for when you see a spy and no one else does, or if a pyro is running straight at you, or if there's absolutely no one around to heal...

Battlemedics? BATTLE MEDICS???
You all sicken me. (and then you wont heal me afterwards, ololol)
No you wont convince me to see your point of view, don't even bother. Jesus.
Maybe I should play some today so PA can see what a medic that heals looks like again. The cut on my finger is getting better, but even crippled I'd probably be of more use.

edit:Nevermind, got it. Capitalization matters apparently.
When I play medic I'm not a battle medic by any means, but I'm not afraid to needle some fools should the need arise.
I'll be trucking along behind a soldier/heavy/pyro and a scout or other fast moving class will get the drop on me. Whoever I am healing is usually too busy doing their thing to notice so I whip out the saw or needlegun and bust some heads. It's proven pretty effective so far, most people don't expect you to fight back. Up close the needlegun can be quite powerful when you don't have to worry about the arc.

The people who were not even on the server while Teefs was up to his shenanigans can fuck right off. If the people on the server at the time had no problem with it, then it is fine. What business is it of yours how he plays his game while you are not even there.
Maybe he was just trying to have fun?
However, if he was doing that and other things that were obviously with the intent of griefing then yeah, just report him to the people in charge of the servers and be done with it. There is no need for you to get on your exceedingly tall horse and bitch to everybody who will listen.
Except that there are a limited amount of slots, in general, on the server and a bonesawing medic isn't exactly the most useful or contributive to the game. And no, this is different than players who are simply less skilled, because it's a deliberate choice.
I'm not contributing my utmost potential to the game when I choose to play any class other than my best, which is demo man. That would be a deliberate choice, so it should warrant a kick from the server, no?
Well, I'd say there are shades of gray. For one, this assumes that you'll never get better at whatever class you're choosing to play over your best...otherwise everybody would be stuck playing the first class they clicked on the first time they played forever. And regardless, there's a pretty big difference between choosing demo over medic even though you're better with medic and choosing medic then deciding you won't bother to heal because the bonesaw is so much more fun.
I really shouldn't have to explain that difference, t really should all fall under "don't be a dick." But the problem is that some people here don't understand the basic concept of what kind of behavior makes one a dick.
Zek is right about this whole thing. It comes down to not being a dick and working well with others, which any human being has a pretty good idea of what that means.
Exactly. Except some people here and who frequent the game are dicks.
Although marty and I did top the point charts as a punching heavy/medic combo, I must remind you all.
You know, I'm not convinced that a punching heavy is quite as shitty as some people make it out to be. Though preferably he should whip out the shotgun every once and a while as well. The minigun isn't really all it's cracked up to be, though.
Oh, and in regards to "expecting" medics to heal you: yes, if you have a medic who insists on fighting rather than healing theoretically somebody else could just go medic to pick up the slack (and the dipshit medic could be treated as a shitty combat class). However, when I'm near death and I see a medic over yonder, I shouldn't have to get them in my sights (and read the name) to see if they're the dipshit medic or the "real" medic or not. I should be able to hit "e," run over, and have a reasonable expectation that if they aren't busy they'll shoot some heal my way. This is not a deathmatch game. If you look like a medic, I expect you to play as one...because otherwise i could wind up dead (because I ran to the medic instead of the medkits). Which does impact my fun.
EDIT: Note that I'm not talking about complaining if a medic heals somebody else instead of you, or simply chooses not to heal you because they're busy at the time, or whatever. Just that if somebody chooses the medic class they should be playing as a medic, not as a shitty scout.
So, hey, is it considered a map glitch on the PA servers to snipe people between train cars before the start of Well? I ask because I got kicked from a pub last night for doing it and I figured it was fair-play up until then.
It is fair play and you could fit a heavy through that gap if you folded him up. Nobody on PA disputes it.

you can also rj or grenade jump over the boxcar and surprise the hell out of anyone that doesn't know about it yet. (More than likely: this will make you the target of 12 people who have nothing to do before the gate opens)
Okay then. The owner of the server personally read the logs, and TFS is now banned.
How's that for authority.
But I love you Flippy. I mean, I love killing you. Which isn't very often. Cause you are a good sniper.
And I don't know what you are talking about with my self-righteousness or whatever. I was just saying the people who were not there should quit whining like he wounded them or something.
And I am perfectly fine with the owner of the server banning TFS. If the people at the time were having huge problems with TFS, and he was actually griefing, and the admin agreed with them, then fuck TFS for griefing, it was a dick move and he deserves what he got. I was just going under the assumption that people were bitching at someone for trying to have fun.
Edit: I do love it when people assume the constitution covers the Internets as well though. The people who own servers can do whatever the hell they want on them. Don't like it? Don't go there. Personally I am happy with how Jon and Jobs have been running their servers.

Borderline griefing (a catch all, really)
Thank fucking christ. I used to be an admin on a CS server a long long time ago, and this was my biggest pet peeve. Haven't seen it in PA servers yet.
Also: I'm glad the people taking the time to bitch and call each other fags for pages and pages are doing it, because then they're not playing the game, and there are less asshats on the server. Everybody wins!

I hate myself now? oO
It's the most powerful class in the game if you stop thinking only in terms of yourself and instead in terms of your team. I realised that the first time I played it. I don't think of things on an individual level. X killed me, therefore I must switch to y to kill him back. No. I think like this: x killed me, I must dodge better so that I can keep my team in overheal so that we can overrun the bastards, take their point and slaughter them like lambs in their spawn.

Additionally, the reason so many people are getting uptight about the current topic is because of the nature in which it was being done, rather than the activity itself, which, like I said, nobody reasonable - and certainly no Penny Arcadians that I respect - is going to stop you doing.
/Diplomacy.
This is the last post I'm making on this because you are not reading what I'm posting. I never said medics shouldn't and can't melee. I'm saying that they should have the decency to at least help out with healing people when they play medic. And doing something just because its what you enjoy is a piss poor reason for doing something esp when it can effect other people, by that logic one should be able to go into a server and use all the exploits and scream racial slurs over voice comm because "that's what they enjoy." And by other people I'm talking about your team (who in this hypothetical scenario the medic is refusing to heal and the people waiting to get in the server in which this medic is taking up a slot while not healing)
p.s. No, You!

This seems reasonable to me, it just bugs me that a lot of players around here have a sense of entitlement regarding being healed. No medic ever is entitled to heal you - it's somewhere between a favor and his job, and his job isn't to heal you.
Be gracious when a medic heals you, be quiet when he doesn't.
In my experience, people will both give you pointers *and* tell you to fuck off:P
Also, Mumblyfish will tell you to fuck off, but he is a bitter husk of a man.
In my experience, people will both give you pointers then shoot you in the face.

I think we need more detail on the OP about joining the PA group. Hell I play 4-5 times a week and I haven't even bothered to figure out what arcane system of invitation Steam uses.

Or do you need the numeric one?
Do you get a kind of self-hating kick, or what.
You should be sorted now. Log on to Steam.
That was my mistake, sorry. I'd say that was mostly likely implemented months ago when there were a shitton of people trying to get in every day. Practicially no one checks the steam thread anymore.
edit:Nevermind, got it. Capitalization matters apparently.
Maybe he was just trying to have fun?
However, if he was doing that and other things that were obviously with the intent of griefing then yeah, just report him to the people in charge of the servers and be done with it. There is no need for you to get on your exceedingly tall horse and bitch to everybody who will listen.
Exactly. Except some people here and who frequent the game are dicks.

How's that for authority.
Edit: The fact that Mumbly is advertised as being sarcastic and bitter, and that he plays medic makes his Gregory House avatar all the more delicious.

Mwuoooohahahahahaaaaa etc etc.
