Alright. So me and some friends (two to be exact, making three total) are looking for a game where we can play through the main story together. This can either be through co-op mode or by swapping the controller around (ie playing an RPG where each person controls his own character in battle). We are looking for games on the Playstation 2 and any post-NES Nintendo system.
Games we have already played:
Gauntlet: Dark Legacy
Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles
Lord of the Rings: Third Age
Phantasty Star Online Ep. I & II
Gamecube: Hunter the Reckoning. 4 player simultaneously gauntlet-ish type game, pretty fun and can be had for cheap. I got it for 6 bucks new off ebay.
PS2
Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance (also available on Gamecube and Xbox; bc 360)
Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance II (also available on Xbox; bc 360)
Everquest: Champions of Norrath
Everquest: Champions of Norrath: Return to Arms
Hunter: The Reckoning: Wayward
Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel (also available on Xbox)
Gauntlet: Seven Sorrows (also available on Xbox; bc 360)
X-Men Legends (also available on Xbox and Gamecube)
X-Men Legends 2 (also available on Xbox and Gamecube)
Xbox
Dungeons and Dragons: Heroes (bc 360)
Hunter: The Reckoning: Redeemer
GameCube
Hunter: The Reckoning (also available on Xbox; bc 360)
Xbox 360
Gears of War
Marvel Ultimate Alliance (also available on PS2, Xbox, PS3 and Wii; bonus characters on the next gen consoles and even more bonus ones on the 360 if you get the gold version or download the Heroes and Villains pack)
Monster Madness: Battle for Suburbia
PS3
Untold Legends: Dark Kingdom
Edit: Just an FYI, Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance II is one of the better ones (if not the best on this list), but it's also extremely rare. It's very unlikely you'll find it at Gamestop or EB. You can find used copies for around $20-30 on eBay and Amazon marketplace though. Much better than the $100+ a new one will cost.
Edit 2: Also, should mention that the Hunter games go in the order of Hunter: The Reckoning, The Wayward and The Redeemer. Not that it has a really intricate plot or anything, just in case you're wondering.
Edit 3: Indicated which ones are backwards compatible with the 360; all other games should be bc with their next generation console (assuming you have the correct model PS3)

those everquest games, I remember when they came out I heard that they were like the BG games (which are among my favorite games ever)... is this true? if so I'll grab them soon too.
gamecube: LOTR the two towers and the return of the king. LOADS of fun, 2 at a time I think.
Tales of Symphonia. Make sure Player One is a caster. A more fun time can't be had.
Unless your playing FF:CC or 4 Swords and don't mind punching your friend for dicking you over.
Symphonia is epic in multiplayer. We always made the healer P1, which was usually me. Many a drunken night was spent on Mania mode.
And I know that 360 isn't in the OP, either, but anyone looking for local co-op on the 360 need not look any further than Earth Defense Force 2017. It's absurd and brilliant, and you will be mowing down millions of giant bugs and spiders and robots while yelling at the top of your lungs.
Edit: Just an FYI, Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance II is one of the better ones (if not the best on this list)
This sentence is so full of wrong it makes my ears bleed.
If you're going to say that, you do have to say which one on that list is better. Gears of War, sure, but I wasn't really counting it since it's an entirely different type of co-op game.
Well, I joined the forums to say 3 players is perfect to play one of the best multi-player RPG/adventure games, Secret of Mana for SNES. That is all.
Green for glory. Exactly what I was going to say. If there were more multiplayer RPGs like Secret of Mana, the world would be a better place. to elaborate: the game has 3 characters, and you each can take 1. it's an action-rpg, so there's not too much menu-fumbling, but there's a great synergy between the 3 characters. you can ask your friend for a heal when needed, or a weapon buff, or suggest a nuke... you can fight over who gets to use which weapon... you'll have a blast ;P

No, I don't think I do. And I never played Gears of War.
Timesplitters 2 (and I have heard lots of good things about Future Perfect, but not played it myself)
Alien Hominid
Metal Slug Anthology
Gradius V
The Red Star
Funny, I'm looking for the same thing, but what I'm looking for is Online Co-op games, mostly through Xbox Live.
Right now I've got Gears of War (had an awesome run with an online buddy), Halo 3 (haven't tried co-op yet), and TMNT Arcade (also awesome, except when an asshole host kicked us out the very second we reached Shredder). I'd like some recommendations on anymore online co-op games, 360 or Arcade.
Also, for the pass-the-controller style play: me and a friend did that a lot with God of War on god/titan mode. That's pretty fun because otherwise it just gets too frustrating.

As far as XBLA, check out Heavy Weapon and Mutant Storm Empire, both shmups but cut from different cloths. And Crackdown has online co-op, IIRC.
Halo 3 has an immensely satisfying co-op campaign. I played through it with a friend, who has never played Halo or any console shooter since Goldeneye and we had a great time. It's also very replayable, due to the level design, metascore and the varying difficulties.
Cherrn on
All creature will die and all the things will be broken. That's the law of samurai.
Baldur's Gate Dark Alliance 2 is awesome despite what Magic Pink might say. Here, I will give reasons: it plays mostly like Diablo 2 only simplified and streamlined so as to be a more fast-paced console experience. Plenty of classes, each with their unique quests, and lots of skills that will take time to try out, which means you've also got plenty of replay value. It's just really well put together and an overall good time. But as the man said, it's really rare.
I wanted to make a passing reference to Ikaruga on the Cube, it can be a lot of fun in co-op.
On the Wii I suggest Metal Slug Anthology more that anything else. It's starting to get rare, so keep an eye out for it! It is really great stuff in co-op. Umbrella Chronicles and Ghost Squad are also good for some amazing shooting fun. Mario Galaxy doesn't have much of a co-op mode but it is indeed there, if your friend doesn't mind a passive experience.
Also keep in mind that if you have a Wii then you have access to the VC for lots more good co-op. Gunstar Heroes and Toejam and Earl are must haves.
Crackdown is a great Co-op game, because really you dont even have to do anything... you can just race around throwing exploding barrels at each other and still have a blast.
While its not exactly co-op, I've found the burnout series to be tons of fun with friends. Whether your racing them and taking them out in head to head, or taking turns in Crash Mode, its always produced some "Holy shit!" moment.s
4 player online co-op Heavy Weapon is one of the greatest experiences that the XBox 360 has to offer. The amount of enemies, projectiles, and explosions that you can get on the screen at one time is legendary.

I see you already have PSO on your list. Try Challenge Mode with four people some time (and if you win, get Samba Maraccas!)
While not ideally-suited, the North American SNES Final Fantasy III (meaining VI in disguise) supports multiplayer in battle and is a damn fine game.
Mario Galaxy has a little co-op element to it, by the way. Another player can control the star cursor, picking up star bits, blasting goombas, 'n whatnot ^^.
Animal Crossing isn't simultaneous multiplayer, but I'll be damned if that game isn't more fun the more people you have playing it for 15 minutes at some point each day.
I second Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles, but only if you already have the Gameboy Advances and link cables needed to make it work.
Same thing for The Legend of Zelda: Four Sword Adventures. If you have the equipment, why don't you have this game?
What's the deal with the Sonic 3 multiplayer sucking compared to the awesome Sonic 2 multiplayer? The 5 repeated laps was no way near as good as the race across a whole level. Was there a technical reason for the change? Or was it a design choice?

Also X-Men Legends > Marvel: Ultimate Alliance IMO.
I guess you missed the part where someone registered solely to mention it!
