It's the holidays, and lots of us will likely be visting family or having diverse groups of friends hanging out together. I've always been a fan of party games for these types of things and usually buy more than is healthy. However, these don't get talked about too much since they're not as deep and complex as something like Bioshock.
I recently bought Smarty Pants (Wii) and Scene-It (360). They're both trivia games, and both have gotten good reviews from my friends/family. Smarty Pants is a general trivia game with some odd mini-games that are best avoided. Not all the game mechanics work great, but the core game is fun and accessible to anyone. One of my gamer friends prefers playing it over our usual staples when he comes over.
Scene-It is movie trivia based and fun with a group, but also pretty fun by yourself. I don't think it's as good as Smarty Pants for parties, since you really have to know movie trivia to compete. The boardgame had some equalizers and randomness thrown in so that non-movie buffs could stay in the game, but the 360 version is much more geared to movie buffs.
What games are you looking forward to playing with friends/family in the next couple of weeks?

And one round only.
I always find Mario Party to be a fun lazy afternoon with four people.
EDIT: I promise I hadn't read the post above mine before writing this one, and that's just weird.

People surprisingly get into the "Find Mii" minigame in Wii Play as well, even if only one person is playing. There's a Where's Waldo aspect that people enjoy, especially with the new Miis I've been fetching off the Check Mii Out channel.
My sister almost bought a PS2 just for karaoke games alone. Drinking + rythmn games almost always ends in good times.

That said: Wii Sports, WarioWare Smooth Moves, and Mario Party.
You're in my head!
Your sentence could be fixed to 'Can't beat my fiancee at Singstar' to me.
Other games can be fumbled through with enthusiasm, in Singstar if someone can actually sing there's no contest.
First time she played she was up against one of my mates and didn't realise until half way through she was meant to be singing at the same time as he was, within two lines she was winning significantly...
thread over
Rock Band's a given, and it's already got it's own thread.
Stuff like Big Brain Acadmey: Wii Degree gets overlooked though. Everyone seems to like that one, and has their favorite puzzles to do in the boardgame mode. It didn't have a ton of staying power, though. It probably needed some more variety in exercises.

My non-gamer family found Guitar Hero to be a little too hard. They do better with dancing, singing, and drum games (like Taiko or Donkey Konga).
Re: Mario Party
Most of my friends don't like Mario Party too much, except in the...5th one I think...there's a race mode that is more based on skill in mini-games than the randomness of the boardgame. My non-gamer friends are usually confused by the minigames (doubly so by Warioware, since it's so fast).
People love it because it's simple (only four buttons: "Hit left," "Hit right," "Hit both" or "Clap/yell/tap sides of drums"), it's got goofy pop songs and half of the game is slamming the drums as fast as you possibly can. You do all of this fun drum-circle stuff, passing melodies back and forth, and just overall acting like an ass.
One of the best platformers of last gen, too, and it usually comes with a set of bongos anyway.
I was so pissed when they dropped bongo support from DK Barrel Blast and turned it into a janky wagglefest. An alcohol-fueled drum-based kart racer could have been the beating heart of so many awesome parties.
