DX10 cards can run just fine in DX9, and the 8800GTX will scream in XP. However, you won't be able to run any any DX10 rendering paths in any games without Vista. You're honestly not going to to miss much.

Zexrol hit it right on, you just won't be able to use/activate any DX10 features in games that support them.

I think you'll be quite happy with the performance of the 8800GTX (I have an EVGA one) under XP. I've thrown everything I own at it, and it eats it up and craps it out with hardly a framerate dip to be had (granted I have an OC'd 4600+ dual core and 3 GBs of 800MHZ RAM in this bad boy too). Only slow down I've ever seen is in The Witcher in the Market area, but Oblivion runs rock solid at 1600x900 and everything cranked up, and Bioshock does the same, but I play it at 1024x768 as 1600x900 does cause it to stutter a bit.

Bioshock stutters at 1600 on a GTX? Somethings wrong. OP, directx 10 apps will not run in XP, but a directx 10 capable card is backwards compatible with all previous versions of directx.

It might have been some driver incompatibility, I haven't tried it at 1600 since back at the end of August. I might try it again, as I just did a complete wipe and driver upgrade last week.
