Oh, ok, the touchscreen as in the the touch sensor over the lower screen. Yes. You'd need an ARM7 or at least a dedicated processor to pretend to be an ARM7. The alternatives to that are ridiculous and overly complicated.

It's strange though. Both processors have registers for all the buttons, but only the ARM7 gets the touchscreen. Probably to free up the ARM9 for more demanding tasks but it's gotta make games like Phantom Hourglass a pain in the ass to program. Especially the dual screen 3D boss battles.

I'd say based on Nintendo's product release history, the chances of not getting yet another redesigned DS is like a gazillion to one.

    How?

It will probably be built in in the next iteration.

As for the processors, what's stopping them from removing the GBA slot, but leaving its processor?

it's gotta make games like Phantom Hourglass a pain in the ass to program. Especially the dual screen 3D boss battles.

    Why?

The Arm7 is controlling touchscreen input. That doesn't preclude the bottom screen from being used as display by the Arm9.

The Arm9 has the capability to render its images on both screens. Why would it be difficult for dual screen 3D games? It's essentially the same as a 1 screen 3D game, except it is simply extending the display onto the next screen.

3D only technically works on one screen at a time. 3D on both screens is a ginormous hacking process.

The dual 3D process is a mess, but I was simply referring to the fact that it would be a pain to have the touch screen act as the main form of input for a 3D game, regardless of screen. If you think about it, in most games, like New Super Mario Bros, touch screen input only indirectly influences main game play. In something like Zelda or Metroid Prime: Hunters, you're either hauling tons of touchscreen data across the bus at all times or writing a multi-threaded game where the pieces of the game that the touchscreen changes are on the ARM7 and others are on the ARM9. Nintendo must have gotten pretty creative in splitting up the game code between the processors to keep it all running smoothly, because hauling all that data doesn't seem particularly viable to me.

Since I created the thread, I guess I can hijack this for a little LTTP session:

How does the wifi on the DS work, exactly? We only have a protected (WEP) network at home, but I found nowhere to enter a password for it. How do you get online with the thing?

The DS doesn't have any built-in WiFi configuration or application. Any WiFi compatible game (noted by the little blue circle on the box) should have a configuration menu that will take you through it step-by-step. The DS can do unencrypted and WEP but not WPA. There are also some specific router compatibility issues that some people have.

If you use a third-party homebrew device (M3, R4, Cyclo, etc) then I recommend DSOrganize as it can now set the firmware wifi settings.

    Cool, thanks!

    Next LTTP question:

Are there any typing/character recognition games availible for it in English? My girlfriend has described how you can just draw the letters on the screen in several Kanji training games, and they sound like great fun!

In the Brain Age games, there are "Memorize the Words" segments and other similar things. You write the words out on the screen when entering your answers. The recognition ranges from good to bad depending on the person.

I just found out that the DS can't do WPA! WHAT A MAJOR FUCK UP!

And even though I switched to WEP and am typing this message on a Macbook connected to it using a 15 length ascii key, the DS refuses to connect to the network.

    Piece of shit!

If the new DS Liter 2+ or whatever it is going to be called won't support WPA, there will be no more money to Nintendo from me (the lack of 720p is already keeping them from any Wii money on my behalf).

Nintendo should do with the DS what Apple does with the iPod. Every year and a half or so, make a version that looks a little different and does one sorta-new thing.

Also eobet: I'd tread lightly. You're beginning to slip into "They don't pander to my precise needs!? THEY SHOULD BE BANKRUPT" territory.

It is bullshit for them not to offer WPA. But if they did offer WPA, then they would lose out on their Wifi dongle sales. It is shitty imho but the way it goes.

There's actually a way you can get your DS to connect to your macbook to access WiFi. I don't have the link offhand, but a google search should turn it up.

Man, I like eobet less and less every poast he makes.

I was gonna come here and help, but damn...

I don't think they're gonna make a DS2 or liter or whatever as long as the DSL is selling so damn well (like better than all other gaming systems in history).
The DSL is fucking gorgeous. It needs no cosmetic changes at all. Heathens.

You're probably doing it wrong. What router do you have?

I have a SpeedTouch 585 with software version 6.1.9.6 running with a 128-bit WEP encryption key that's 13 ascii characters long.

I tried modes g, b b/g and a special legacy b mode for older devices. Nothing worked.

It's not about the graphics, but the sharpness. 480p looks like crap on my Bravia. It needs 720p to look OK. I mean, you can't even buy CRT tellys anymore even...

Since I am already using the wifi to access the router, I'm not sure how it would be possible to also share it with the DS... unless the DS has bluetooth or something?

When I get home from the holidays, I'm going to need it to connect to an Airport Express as well... wonder how that will work... anyone have experience with that?

Oh, I forgot about that little detail, I'm used to connecting to ethernet whenever possible. Ok, I guess you can scratch that idea.

So yeah, I agree that not supporting WPA makes life a lot harder, and is pretty dumb, especially if it's just so they can sell more of those usb things.

B/G mode is your best bet. You should enter the key as 26 character hex, not ASCII.

I'd like to point out that some games (Hotel Dusk and the Brain Age games) make you hold the DS on it's side, which is really interesting. I don't know if I'd want that many games playing like that, but it was awesome for Hotel Dusk.

Isn't the new Ninja Gaiden supposed to do this as well?

Just to correct this little detail...CRTs are still very much available and even popular. They perform better than LCD displays in several ways, including color and rendering motion. They can fit a higher resolution into a smaller screen area, and retain their picture from any viewing angle. You can read the "Future of CRT Technology" section here for more info.
