Generally if the game comes with the box and manual then I deem it more legit. I have the game, box, and manual at home and can check it out for you - but that won't be for 3 more hours.

My copy, which is definitely legit, has a white-filled E.
But yeah, the ESRB logos changed from the white-filled letters to black-filled sometime back then. It may be fake, but you can't tell by the ESRB logo.

The screw mounting for the cartridge, whether they put Nintendo onto the cartridge's back plastic are one of the few ways to detect a bootleg. Low feedback amount? always a warning sign but there are people just starting out on ebay.
If the price is right and the risk adjustment matches the price then go for it.

as you can see the ESRB design was changed from when FFVII was released to the release of FFIX.
So much easier for us in Europe, just find the one that has the European rating as all pirates are based on American labels!
Was the ESRB art changed for all products at some point?
thats the current one at the moment. It looks fine as far as I can tell. The only way to tell a bootleg is an up close pic of the cartridge itself.
