Hellboy II: The Golden Army Teaser Trailer is LIVE!
Looks good for the most part, as usual from Del Toro. Lots of shots re: the hidden kingdom, but not enough HB imo. Not nearly enough Abe Sapian, nor Liz (mostly she's just hot/on fire), and only ONE shot of Johan!
In retrospect, it's really not all that bad, I guess I just want more.
I still don't know what to think about the original movie. Ron Perlman was great, as always. It looked incredible. It had lots of great action scenes. But the story was dull and filled with terrible clichés. The human main character was unfathomably horrible, and it just felt like they tried to do pack way too much in there, so it ended up feeling disjointed and erratic.
This looks better, but I've never really been a fan of the way Del Toro does action movies. I just don't think he has a flair for it.

All creature will die and all the things will be broken. That's the law of samurai.
How can Del Toro make an amazing movie like Pan's Labyrinth, but have most of his other work be pretty unspectacular stuff?
Hopefully, since he got the origin story out of the way, he will be able to make the movie much better and more coherent.
He may have tentacles on the mind because he is making a mountains of madness movie adaptation, which I really really really really really hope he can pull off well. Insofar, there has been no true Lovecraft movie except for one average B-Movie, Dagon.

Actually, there was a Call of Cthulhu movie made a couple of years ago that was supposed to be pretty decent. It was direct to video and produced by the H.P. Lovecraft Historical Society, and was done as an old black and white silent movie from the 1920s. I've been meaning to check it out.
The trailer for HB2 looks promising. Does anyone know if this based on one of the comic's stories, as the first movie was loosely based on Seed of Destruction?
This really is where I think Del Toro can shine. He's set up the world and given the source material it's nod, now he's free to go nuts and really put his creature creation skills to work.
Wasn't as awesome a trailer as I had hoped, but I still enjoyed it. The buildup in the beginning was pretty good. Also, why do I recognize the music? I know it from somewhere and it's driving me nuts.

I take it you haven't heard of Cronos and The Devil's Backbone? I actually really like his Hollywood offerings too though, the first Hellboy especially.

Aw, what? I've liked many of his previous movies. First Hellboy was pretty fucking good, Blade II is damn good, The Devil's Backbone, which is what Pan's was a companion piece to, is actually a great movie and Cronos was pretty interesting too. Even Mimic, which did so much wrong, had a bunch of cool things in it.
I think his earlier work is pretty good, really. Nothing phenomenal like Pan's, but you have a great movie in Devil's and a bunch of other good, entertaining, visually appealing movies.
That was awesome. I thought the first one was an alright movie, so my expectations were abit lower for this one. However this one seems to deliver monsters and foes in spades! mmmmmore tentacle monsters always equal a cooler movie!

I have seen this movie. It was called Beyond The Wall of Sleep.
It is fucking bizarre. I have never seen a weirder movie in my life and you feel like you are going crazy watching it. William Sanderson is fantastic in it though.
The big thing I didn't like about the first Hellboy movie was setting up all the characters, the BPRD, etc, since it slowed down the whole movie to do all those introductions. I'm definitely looking forward to this since it won't have to deal with any of that. Anytime Ron Perlman does that deadpan, "Crap," I can't help but smile.
Hellboy is one of those franchises that I think will get better as the installments go on. We've already seen this with the animated features: Sword of Storms is just alright, but the second one, Blood and Iron, knocks it out of the park (I thought).
Del Toro is a fantastic director. I don't remember much about Chronos because I only saw it once when it first came out, but I remember liking it a lot. The Devil's Backbone and Pan's Labrynth are great examples of what modern adult fairy tales can be. Blade II is in many ways better than the original (stupid wrestling moves notwithstanding). The first Hellboy movie was lackluster, but it was at least well made, and now that they have the characters down, they can release it in a more serial format and have a lot of fun.
Lovecraft discussion:
I didn't know that he was doing At the Mountains of Madness. Holy crap. That's the one Lovecraft story that I have always wanted to see as a movie. He's the perfect guy for the job, too. It will bitchslap Alien vs. Predator all around the sandbox as a "secret alien base under Antarctica" movie, that's for damn sure.
I've seen the silent film, The Call of Cthulhu, and it's pretty good... if a bit hard to watch for modern viewers (it's not old itself, it's just done in the 1920's silent style). Very moody and creepy.
Director Stuart Gordon does a lot of fun Lovecraft stories: Re-Animator, Dagon (I love this one), and the Masters of Horror episode, and Dreams in Witch House.
Necronomicon was a 3-episode anthology of Lovecraft stories, including one of my favorites, "Rats in the Walls."
That's just the stuff I've seen... there's piles of Lovecraft stuff out there if you know where to look (and "by where to look," I mean Wikipedia).

That's fucking hilarious. Pancakes defeat the legions of Hell.
About the trailer: That looks really good. "Why don't you just start with me?"
About Dreams in the Witch House:
It sure wasn't great, but I thought it was creepy enough... passable for a Masters of Horror episode. It was no Sick Girl or Homecoming, though, that's for sure.
Awesome trailer! I really can't wait to see this movie. It looks like it's going to be a lot better than the first one. The movie trailer after you one you linked looks good, too - Mongol.

Somebody involved in this movie (the director maybe? don't remember where I heard it) just loves tentacles. It's almost distracting.

I'm surprised they put Blood Elves into the movie as the bad guys. Totally kills their angsty no-one understands us thing.
Dagon is great.
The Masters of Horror episode is terrible.
I immediately thought Wraith when I saw them.
I've been wanting to read some of this series, but It's not available anywhere near me.
I did find this, one time, when GISing "Pancakes"

My god the special effects are gorgeous. :^:
He's not doing the voice this time around is he?
Last I heard, Doug Jones was doing the voice. However, the voice in the new trailers sound an awful lot like Pierce.
edit: Princess Nuala... do I spy a Sandman reference?
While he does have a distinctive style, you may just be recognising the man-in-the-suit. Doug Jones plays the "monsters" in most of Del Toro's films.
