The fact of the matter is, Nintendo is doing these people a favor.
This game doesn't need Snake or Sonic or Mega Man to sell a million billion copies. That shit was guaranteed from the start. If Mega Man is going to be in this game (which I doubt very seriously) it's going to be because Capcom comes to Nintendo and begs them.
Same for any other 3rd party character, really. But we already know you think there won't be any more.
I didn't realize Mewtwo was a villain at all. I thought he was just a rare pokemon. What, is he bent on world domination?
In the game's continuity, Mewtwo was a failed clone of the mythical Pokemon Mew. It's extremely violent and reclusive. It's been sealed away in the Unknown Dungeon, and defeating it in RBY is the ultimate sign of your Pokemon mastery.
The anime takes it a little further. Mewtwo is created by Team Rocket, but being as or more intelligent than them, resents that it's being treated like a slave. Furthermore, it harbors deep hatred for humanity in general for what it sees as their abuse and exploitation of Pokemon, and for that reason wants to destroy mankind. He has a change of heart, however, after seeing how Ash's death causes Pikachu to fall to pieces, and revives him before going off to live a life of quiet solitude.
Personally, I think either Giovanni packing Golbat, Raticate, and Nidoking or Gary packing Blastoise, Alakazam, and Arcanine would be a much more iconic Pokevillain.

Kojima ASKED for Snake to be in the game, and I'm pretty sure Yuji Naka approached them (though I wouldn't be surprised if I was wrong). I doubt Inafune is dumb enough to assume he's the only one who doesn't HAVE to ask.
Besides, Kojima and Inafune are buddies. I imagine "Hey Snake is in Brawl!" would be followed by "You should get Mega Man in there."
It was on Capcom's "Top Secret" Bionic Commando podcast they have every now and then.
(And for some reason, Go Nintendo seems to get all the credit)

The third party characters they're adding are far higher profile than any of the first party newcomers. Brawl is a guaranteed purchase regardless to nerds like us, but for people who need convincing the presence of someone like Sonic or Mega Man could definitely sell the game when all the Nintendo characters they like were already in Melee. It's a mutually beneficial arrangement and Nintendo would be crazy not to seek the rights for a popular character because they don't "need it."

... Ash dies?
At least twice that I know of. In one episode, a Gengar dropped a chandelier on him as a prank, and Ash's ghost had fun with all the Ghost Pokemon hanging out in Lavender Town. He goes back into his body at the end of the episode.
In the first movie, Pikachu somehow ends up in the crossfire of Mew and Mewtwo's energy blasts, and Ash jumps out to take the shot, getting turned to stone. Pikachu freaks the fuck out and tries to electrocute him back to life, and all the Pokemon watching start crying, their tears restoring him for no good reason whatsoever.
I seem to recall there being a Japan-only episode in which ash both drowns and gets blown up by dynamite at the same time only to be saved somehow by a Dragonair.
I wish Ash would die forever, and the show would be canceled.
Fucking anime. I've said it before, and I'll say it again, keep the anime it out of Smash.

You know, I first thought that the arwing at the very end of the clip was being attacked by Ridley due to the wings. A closer look said no.

Very few people actually celebrate Christmas (just the Christians, of course), but a lot of places put up decorations and otherwise "get into the spirit" during the Christmas season. They just think it's fun, I guess, and for stores it's good marketing.
