<Pikmin & Olimar>
Goodness! Captain Olimar joins the fray with five colors of Pikmin in tow! He plucks Pikmin from the ground and they fight as his allies.
Without Pikmin, Olimar can’t even do a Smash Attack. And the short-lived Pikmin tend to scatter. Theirs is a fated symbiotic relationship.

Choosing Pikmin music is a rather difficult thing to do. In trying to find a song that would be remembered by those who played the game...
I thought about areas that everyone would visit when starting and ending play, and thus chose this song.
Its arrangement came together in a smooth and lovely way. It conveys the remarkable Pikmin world. It’s nice.

Assist Trophy: This item is similar to be Pokéball but instead produces various video game characters. These are not in any way playable characters.

Known Assist trophies:
Hammer Bro

Nintendog

Samurai Goroh

Dr. Wright

Knuckle Joe

Devil

Andross

Lyn

Mr. Resetti

Excitebike

Lakitu

Little Mac

Gray Fox

Saki Amamiya

Stafy

Waluigi

Poké Ball: An all-time favorite item which gives you a random Pokémon ranging from the earliest to latest games.

Known Pokémon:
Groudon

Deoxys

Munchlax

Piplup

Meowth

Bonsly

Known returning Pokémon: Bellossom, Celebi, Chikorita, Electrode, Entei, Goldeen, Ho-Oh, Lugia, Mew, Snorlax, Staryu, Suicune, Togepi, Wobbuffet
Gooey Bomb: The Gooey Bomb acts as a sticky Remote Mine. While stuck to a character, it can be passed back after making contact with another player.

Cracker Launcher: This projectile launcher isn't as racist as it sounds. It shoots out rapid-fire blasts and can be aimed up and down while running.

Banana Peel: Because clichés work. This item doesn't do much other than tripping an opponent.

Bumper: A returning item from the original Super Smash Brothers, this time around it can be placed in midair.

Pitfall: The item comes from Animal Crossing and retains its effect from there. It can trap opponents in the ground or drop them through a platform.

Smoke Ball: This item deals no damage, but rather actually just blinds the player from the screen. It shoots out rainbow-colored gas.

Franklin Badge: Debuting from the Mother Series (Earthbound), it attaches to a player's chest and is basically an automatic reflector.

Spicy Curry: When a Fire Flower just can't suit your flaming needs, eating this will make your player constantly spew out flames.

Golden Hammer: A coat of paint works wonders, this hammer is flung around at crazy speeds and can let you hover. Occassionally it is a worthless squeaky hammer.

Smart Bomb: From the Starfox series, this bomb creates a massive explosion when thrown.

Team Healer: Only appearing in Team Battles, this item has to be picked up and thrown at your teammate to heal him, and can be intercepted.

Dragoon: You must fight to collect all three pieces before winning the one-hit KO of this legendary Air Ride machine.

Confirmed returning items: Beam Sword, Bob-omb, Bumper, Bunny Hood, Fan, Fire Flower, Food, Freezie, Green Shell, Hammer, Heart Container, Home-Run Bat, Lip's Stick, Maxim Tomato, Motion-Sensor Bomb, Mr. Saturn, Party Ball, Poison Mushroom, Poké Ball, Ray Gun, Screw Attack, Star Rod, Starman, Super Mushroom, Super Scope, Warp Star
Still unceartain items: Barrel Cannon, Cloaking Device, Flipper, Metal Box, Parasol, Red Shell

Series Represented
So far, we've been given a list of series that have been represented, but as we get this list, its come to us out of order. We currently have gaps as shown:

1. Smash Brothers
2. Donkey Kong
3. StarFox
4. Kirby
5. F-Zero
6. Metroid
7. EarthBound/Mother
8. Pokemon
9. Zelda
10. Mario
11. Yoshi
12. Fire Emblem
13. ???
14. Ice Climbers
15. Animal Crossing
16. Wario
17. Metal Gear
18. Kid Icarus
19. ???
20. Sonic the Hedgehog
21. Nintendo DS
22. Pikmin
*22 Is the highest number we're aware of, it in no way indicates that it is the final number
It seems that icons at least require a stage to exist, so just because an icon is out there doesn't nessecarily mean there's going to be a character featuring it.

The Penny Arcade Super Smash Brothers Brawl Online Tournament List!
This is all organized courtesy of Nickle. It is planned to take place a week or two after the game comes out so people have a chance to practice. There are still plenty of spots available here if you want to sign up.
Here is the tournament list, which is more of a placeholder than anything else. People will have to reconfirm their desire to take part in the tournament when it arrives.

Smash Brothers Community Terminology
This is a very thorough look at advanced Smash terms to help end confusion about them. ChopperDave wrote it and has this to say:
Here is something that could be considered Part 3 of the Smash Bros Terminology. It goes over common misconceptions about tournament players and seeks to help end the SmashBoards versus casual play arguments which always seem to pop up in these threads. Everyone should take a look at these discussions:
-More talk about the competitive community by Chopper Dave
-Joshua368 which stages are banned in tournament play ... and explains why

Customizable signatures that display user names and friend codes.
Here is something that mntorankusu and Geod have been working on, which will allow people to easily put their favorite character and friend code in a fancy signature to help organize things once the game comes out. It allows you to choose your name, character, icon, friend code, and color of character. This is what they look like:
Heres to Geno!
I imagine King DeDeDe will be the next playable-character villain with a gun, with Ganon and the rest of the unlockable villains (Ridley!) following.
I'm hoping that with the games I get for Christmas, time will pass quickly and I'll be brawling with you all before I know it.
Also, thanks to whoever made those edits to the tourney stuff, it sounds better than whatever I had there.
I do disagree with allowing Canadians their own special word for their states, but I can let it slide.
Seems shorter when you put it that way, since February seems like infinity away.
I've been holding out on SMG because my little sister wanted it for christmas.
And the only Wii that'll be at home is mine, so we'll be playing some sweet, sweet co-op when I'm home for the break, and then I'm stealing it back.
So I'll have that. Also I'll have MGS : PO, KZ:L, M:UA, and Daxter.
Plus starting January 15th my schedule asplodes into horror again.

Or did the lack of an announcement for the 20th anniversary thoroughly crush those dreams into a fine powder?
Presumably, a third party character would have some kind of event to go with it (like Snake at E3 and Sonic at that thing he was announced at)...unless there isn't another third party character.
January 24th, probably.
Just you. I don't have any problems with it.
It's working for me right now. Can even play the video, etc.

Christmas.
Then, when they remember that Christmas is a romatic holiday for Japan, New Years.
Then when New Years doesn't happen, Groundhog's Day.
Late February.
EDIT: And what is Zelda does with that fairy? New attack? Taunt? Fairy item?
* Already seen on website
** Already seen on the demo from GameTrailers
> Opening scene of the Halberd dropping dark matter upon the stadium where Mario and Kirby are. Primids form as the Subspace Emissary's logo appears.*
> Mario's surprised look from when the Halberd first arrives.*
> Pit looking up after landing on a grass field.**
> Fox using his reflector to reflect a large engery blast.*
> Mario, Peach, Zelda and Kirby strike an action pose in the stadium.*
> Primids begin forming from dark matter in the forest.

> Mario in gamplay fighting Primids in the stadium. Cut to Zelda also attacking, using her Foward+B.**
> Rayquaza emerges from water and roars.*
> Near the pond, Diddy Kong and Fox jump out of the way of a trophy-transforming blast coming from Bowser.
> Peach is lying defenseless, unrescued, after the Petey Pirahna fight (as opposed to Zelda who we've seen)

The last line contains a pretty big error. You're linking the wrong website.
Yeah... I don't remember that either.
Of course, 10/10/07 was the day they officially announced Sonic (and we first heard of the delay); given the "I hope I can get this out in time" message on that notice, I think it was quietly shelved.

Looks like a taunt to me.
In a video that was recorded off-screen from a Subspace Emissary video that was playing at E4A. Wario used it on Zelda, I imagine in the game he'll use it on whichever princess you didn't save.
Edit: And if that's the video I'm thinking of, then that's one of Link's taunts. He's standing right beside Zelda, right?
There's a vid on gametrailers (I think) where Wario blasts Zelda.
found it: http://www.gametrailers.com/player/26686.html
also shows kirby fighting petey (he makes the proper choice in saving Peach, of course).
This, sir, is a travesty.
Pokemon Safari - Sneasel, Pawniard, ????
Also, she is unused to confinement ad probably wouldn't like it very much. Peach on the other hand might not even notice that she's been kidnapped again...:P
Also, in re: that video. Zelda and Link are both doing their taunts simultaneously to get that effect I think; hers is the cool glowy hand thing she does and the fairy is Link's

Smash-Zelda barely has an identity to me. Typically someone picking Zelda goes something like this:
Zelda Player: ARGH! I'm losing *Twinkly Transforming Noise*
It's like the incredible hulk or something.
