Unexplained failure to connect to XBL, help!

All right, so earlier today I was enjoying some CoD4 and VF5. I shut off the console to watch a movie on my PS2 and browse the boards, and when i turn the console back on I can't connect to XBL. So, I run the test and it passes the tests until it hits XBL, then fails. There is no error message. Okay, so, I restart my console hoping that will help. It didn't. I shut off my router, then turn it back on and then restart the console again. Nothing.

It keeps reaching XBL and failing. Anybody know what I should do?

XBL is currently wonky. Many people cannot connect.

Yeah, there's a post on xbox.com saying that they're experiencing problems, and that they're working on it.

Sucks, I got home from Christmas shopping, and can't get my online Rock Band on now. I've Been trying to connect for over an hour.

Ah, thanks yal. I checked xbox.com and saw no planned outages, so I thought it was just my machine being wonky. This is, however, still a pretty shitty circumstance.

It's even worse here. I've changed consoles recently (sent it to MS for repair, got new one) and forgot to redownload all my XBLA titles, so now I'm stuck having to play the trial version since it won't connect to Live. :(

So I have seen threads like this come up a few times. Is it particularly regular for live to go down every now and again?

If it does go down often, has anyone tried getting something out of MS for it? I know if my paid for online service ever went down I wouldn't be happy. I imagine a polite complaint to them would net something like a bunch of free MS funbucks

Maybe it happened when I wasn't using my 360, but this is the first time I can't connect.

For the love of god don't try logging into live in game. I was playing COD4 single player and was in about 30 minutes without saving, and tried to sign in live. Without any warning the XBOX just signed me out of my profile and back a level or two.

It goes down some times for a new dashboard update for for maintenance, but straight up unscheduled downtime? Maybe three times all year for 5-6 hours?
