Hello everyone, I finally picked up an Xbox 360 Pro or Premium or whatever, the one with the 20GB HDD and I had a few questions.
I just set it up and when I check to see how much space is left on the hard drive it says there's only 13.5 GB free... but when I click on that and it shows the breakdown of how big each file is, it only adds up to 354.668 MB:
Games - 321 MB
Gamer Profiles - 668 KB
Themes - 29 MB
Gamer Pictures - 3 MB
System Items - 1 MB
What is taking up the 6.5GB that's missing? (I already deleted all the dumb videos that come pre-loaded on the console, and most of the tiny game demos as well. but the games alone take up only 321MB)
I initially thought it was just the blades/dashboard that was taking up the missing space... but the regular Arcade Xbox has the dashboard and all that, and doesn't have a hard drive so that can't be it. Any help or answers are greatly appreciated!
Also, do themes disappear from the marketplace once they get too old? I was previewing themes on xbox.com and saw an awesome Street Fighter II theme, but when I go to buy it, it only offers one crappy Akuma theme rather than the 3 it was showing on the website.. (I even checked from the USA, UK, and Japan stores since I set up silver membership accounts in those regions.)
Thanks in advance for any help you guys can provide! = )

I'm not 100% sure why, as far as I can tell theres no good reason. If there is, I stand corrected.
Xbox-related stuff + formatting stuff + system cache + that little bit you 'lose' because companies call 1,000 megabytes a gigabyte and computers call 1,024 megabytes a gigabyte.
If I remember correctly, the magic number was seven. In that you could expect to get a hard disk with 7% less storage space than what you were told by the manufacturer due to 'formatting".
You've also got 2GB reserved for the backward compatibility software, and three banks of (I think) 750MB each reserved for game cacheing. The rest is extra space for security and a couple of other things I'm forgetting.
None of it is the OS or dashboard.
On a side note, security and system data is the reason why devs are limited to using only ~7GB of space on a DVD-9 for 360 games.

if i had known this i probably would've gone with the Elite then...
that's stupid, why call it a 20GB hard drive if you really only have 13GB to play with.
Anyhow... thanks for the info.
Any ideas as to the Street Fighter theme? Or is stuff only on the marketplace for a limited time and I'm basically outta luck now?
Because marketing people wrote the specs on the box instead of the tech people.
Could be in a separate category.
