Flying With A Computer

Alright I'm moving back to Nova Scotia in February.

I need to get my clothes, computer, blanket on a plane comfortably without risking too much. I have a 19in lcd
monitor which scares me the most. I'll have only 2 standard bags of up to 50lbs each. And a carry on. Is there someone who's done this properly? Am I making a big deal of this when really it's not? Will I have to weigh my computer out? I'm kind of worried the computer components alone will take up a whole bag in weight. Would it be easier to just ship it down? I was thinking about shipping down my guitar and longboard.

I'm on a tight budget. I need to be able to eat and pay rent and such. Suggestions?

edit - Should I dismantle the computer and just buy a new case down there?

Take your original computer boxes and stuff it in. Ask them to throw it on fragile shipping.

One of the funniest things I ever saw at work was a laptop shaped like a banana . I asked the guy what happened and he replied " I didn't have room to take it carry-on."

Give that LCD a kiss if you put it in regular baggage, because its gonna be toast. I would suggest anything delicate get shipped or some other option that insures safety. Also, can you actually carry computer components on airplanes these days? Figured they would be a security risk.

Whereabouts are you moving from? I guess the better question is, how far is the trip?

If you're a reasonable distance (greater than an hour or so's flight) I'd suggest bringing it with you on the flight. Yes, baggage guys can be rough with luggage sometimes, but look at your alternatives. People are always rough with cargo, so unless you're going to physically keep it with you all the time, the less time that an object is in transit, the safer it is. And taking it with you via checked baggage on the plane is probably the fastest. I'm not sure which carrier you're flying with, but in many cases the fee charged for extra pieces of checked baggage is the same, or cheaper, than it would cost to ship it via ground.

If money truly is a big problem, the cheapest way I've found to ship items, particularly bulky ones, is via Greyhound Cargo. But keep in mind there's a 100% chance of them losing it, having it stolen on-route by an employee, or breaking it.
