Things to do in Toronto / Montreal

Me and my two brothers (ages running from 19 to 24) are leaving on a road trip tomorrow that should take us through Toronto and Montreal. I was hoping anyone who is familiar with the cities could recommend some places to go or things to do. We are looking for good nightlife locations as well as stuff to do during the day. All three of us are into music, and I wouldn't mind checking out more geek related stuff (comic stores, etc.). We will have a car available and are staying in downtown areas in each city. Right now our schedule has us in Toronto the 27th and 30th, Montreal on the 28-29. Thanks for the help guys.

Montreal is awesome. Make sure you hit up St. Catherine's Street in the evening. Tons of clubs and fun things to do. It's damn cold and be preped to do a lot of walking.

I'd recommend checking out Peel Pub and Stoogies. TONS of strip clubs if you want to do that too.

For table top gaming/magic cards/stuff you can go to Carta Magica on St. Hubert. There's a comic store up there too, but I've never been to it.

Where are you staying? Downtown parking is pretty crappy. I'd suggest you leave your car at the hotel and cab it. The metro system is convenient too and is a good option for travel during the day. Don't think it'll be too cold in the coming few days. Just be sure to bring a warm jacket and a scarf and you should be fine.

If you are not into strip clubs, I'd suggest St. Laurent over St. Catherine's. I find the the scene there to be more classy. I also recommend a nice poutine after you're done with the bars. Speaking of food, stop by Schwartz's for a smoked meat sandwich but don't get the lean.

Not too many ideas for what you can do during the day besides the usual tourist stuff. I think any guidebook can give you information on that.

Oh and make sure you check the signs when making right turns. A lot of times you can only turn right on a green. I find Montreal drivers to be quite "carefree", so you may want to keep your eyes extra open when you're in the city, both walking and driving.

I'm not too familiar with the nightlife in Toronto. Walk around the Entertainment District and I'm sure you can find a few interesting places. Cover charge is pretty expensive depending on which nights you go (~$15-20).

edit: Oh and don't worry if some people give you attitudes if you speak English to them. They're just being assholes.

Buy tickets to a Leafs game from a scalper and pretend to know the words to their national anthem. That's what me and my friends did when we decided to go to Toronto one weekend.

Make sure the tickets aren't for the standing room at the very top of the arena though. The only place in the building where they won't let you drink. >_<

St Cats is for tourist scum!

So. you know, it's busy and fun. But St Laurent is a bit nicer for a night out in my opinion.

I recommend Vol Du Nuit on Prince Arthur (intersects with St Laurent) to get a buzz on before walking around. Cafe Campus usually has some sort of show going on, there are a few clubs to go to. I really liked my recent dinner at Tamales, a Mexican place nearby my roommates and I had ignored because it was too expensive. Turns out it's $10.75 for two burritos, not one.

Else's and Le Pistol are two good barsteraunts. You need to order at least one item of food in each in order to drink, but they have decent drinks and a nice atmosphere so long as you're not in them during the busiest hours.

Edit: Also, if you're in the mood for Italian L'Acadamie is a really nice place on the corner of Duluth and St Denis. It's cheap, and the pasta dishes are $4 for about 100,000 pounds.

The Toronto zoo is pretty cool, if anybody's interested in that kinda thing.

I'll second the zoo. The Royal Ontario Museum is also nifty, and Scotiabank Theater has an IMAX that's playing I Am Legend with the Dark Night Joker introduction with the previews.

    For Toronto,

If you like Jazz, The Rex on Queen St W. one block west of University Ave. You can usually stand outside and determine if the band is good enough to opt for the cover charge.

Just West of that near Richmond and John is the club district. I'm not much of a club rat but you've got dozens to choose from around there.

If you plan on going up the CN Tower it's kinda pricey, so check the weather first and make sure it's a clear day, if it's overcast or foggy you won't see anything and will have wasted the money. If you have the cash to spend on a pricey dinner, the food at the top (Fairly certain the place is called 360) is really good and you get a free trip up. Go for lunch to save some money, but it will still be pricey.

Back on Queen street visit The Silver Snail. It's a comic store. If you like really odd junk/electronics stop by Active Surplus nearby. Walking back and forth on Queen near both those places will give you lots of shopping, along with some decent indy music stores.

Even if you have a car, parking can be a bit of a pain, the TTC daily or weekend ride pass is a good deal for hopping on/off the subway/bus/streetcar.

Check TO Tix before buying tickets to a show/theatre thing. Sometimes they come in at half the price, sometimes they're about the same as the box office, worth checking out.

The Science Centre is really cool, I hadn't been since I was a kid and just went last night. At 26 I still really enjoyed myself, lots of interactive stuff the play with.

People already mentioned the ROM, I haven't been since the new addition, but I've heard good things.

I could go on for hours, I'll post again if I remember something really cool.
